Ppcollar (aka Prong) - 2008 Regulation Review - Outcome
MonElite replied to Erny's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Instead of DPI contacting people you could get a satement form each person advicing that they either agree or disagree with their personal info being there. -
The dog isnt that bad, still needs excercise to keep the muscles up, they have been adviced to keep the excercise up, controlled non invasive, none of the crazy running etc. Tank you all for the suggestions, certainly enought ideas there to work with.

I dont know PF. All I know that the owner was told to use a harness, and no collar whatsoever to remove any pressure on the neck vertebrae. Mind you I think that the person would have been a bit overwhelmed with the info about what to do and what not to do with the dog to even contemplate asking what brand of a harness to use.
-
The dog is a dobermann. The dog has Wobblers (for those that dont know - a degenerative condition of a spine, majority of time in the neck region, leading to the paralysis of all legs). The owner has been advised to walk the dog on a harness but the dog is a puller. The dog has previously been walked on a check chain. I thought a prong would be ok, but apparently the recommendation is harness only. Will those funny looking harnesses with thin cords under arms that prevent pulling be ok? Im not sure what are they called and how they work. Any advice experts?

Husky Related Obedience School Queries
MonElite replied to skuzy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
IMHO YOU should be your dogs best trainer not somebody else. Its YOUR dog. Books some lessons with K9 - he has been recomended here already, or Steve Austin - these are some of the well known reputable trainers in Sydney, join an obedience club, try educating yourself better. -
TNT sounds as both clubs are a bit extreme, Id find something in between. But if I was to choose the one out of those two Id choose the food one.
-
I would find a club that uses a mixture of positive and some corrective methods with more positive input. Dog training should be fun for the dog, regardless if its learning to drop stay or go over a jump. Food, toys and/or praise shuld be used in training, IMHO on any dog.

Being on the receiving end I have had trainers/instructors have me in tears. Not once..........

An entry in all breeds show is aprox $10. (more for specialties)The prices that the dog wins (if any, and there are very few to be won) are not worth much money, maybe $20 or so. You also get ribbons, except a sentimental memento value they are of no monetary value. I would be discussing each of your questions with the breeder, agreeing to something and having this in writing. Seen way to many disagreements about showing dogs.

How To Treat Canine Pack Members?
MonElite replied to KitKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I treat mine the same. Whoever gets to me first get the treat/pat etc. I feed together at some distance, release to the food together each goes to its bowl, stand there watching them eat. -
There is probably a lot of truth in what you say but Ill give you a different perspective. I have a 60 yo man in class with a very large dog. The dog weights well over 50kg and is simply FAT. The dog is under 12 months old. The dog has undesended testicle. The dog is dog agro. The dog is high drive and strong nerved. All in all - wrong dog for the owner. Lovely dog, lovely man - he really is and is trying very hard (but really has no idea), just shouldnt be together. So I say week after week, dont feed your dog before training he will take the treats better, the dog gets breakfast and lunch, and we train at 3pm. I say desex your dog, not only becouse I belive it might calm him down a bit but also becouse he has an undesended testicle. Oh no, thats wrong. I say get your dog away from the class and do x y z - no he wants to do it near the class. I say show the dog that there is fun and pleasure in training and FFS stop slapping his face when he misbehaves, its your fault he does. I have done this each week for 2 months now, at least he doesnt feed the dog now on the day of training and doesnt slap the dog on the face - in front of me, but when I cought him doing it elswhere when he didnt see me, I sure did loose it and gave him one of those rude remarks that us volounteer instructors can pull off. Not to mention I gave him a pretty rude rundown on how he should stop thinking like a male and take the dog to the vet to heve him snipped. Im waiting for the day when his dog pisses on him, maybe this will help.

They are not kicking the grass to cover it, they are kicking the grass with their smell to make it larger and to show how big and great they are. And whos territory it really is.

Im affraid that nothing is availble in your area due to However you can check with the Illawara or the Western Sydney Dogsport clubs. Dont hold your breath tho.

My way of thinking with a heavy lead than a light lead would be that no I wouldnt do it. The dog knows the weight of the heavy lead and knows its on lead , if you remove the weight and replace it with something very light it will feel that its off lead. I would do the other way around - teach the dog off lead from the start than adding a light lead for trials (only needed for CCD anyway) I use a strong leather lead for loose lead walking, its for my comfort and dogs security more than the dogs.

Sudden On-set Of Destructive Behaviour
MonElite replied to novta's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
In PAXs defence i think it might ahve been this coment that brought the thought.I admitedly thought the same when I read the first post. -
Landmarks? Ok its a large park with trees and grass, green brick shed for the club house next to the toilets ;) In all honesty there are no landmarks around , closest street to the club house is Robyn St. Peakurst you can come throught that gate on your first day, you will be than explained how to get to the park for subsequent days, as I can not remember the street name you should use to enter the park. Fees $3 per each lesson and a joining fee of I think $50 for a family less for an individual. Bring the money, vacciantion certificate and be there about 2.15 pm to fill in the paperwork etc. Class starts at 3pm

Low Drive Versus High Drive Dogs
MonElite replied to ness's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think it depends what drive you are talking about. Are you talking about prey drive, food drive, a defence drive? A dog can be a high food drive dog but a low prey drive dog. There are dogs that have high play drive but not very high prey drive. They will tug with the owner in play but arent willing to be chasing a ball, as an example. I do imagine that you are talking about prey drive here. To me a dog that is willing to chase and capture an object is a high prey drive dog. low drive dog - is a dog that I would find very hard to motivate. -
I have it come off, but I think it was becouse I didnt put it on properly. I have once went to the park and took the collar off for the dog to go off lead, was carrying the prong loose opened attached to the lead and lost a link that fastens the collar. making the collar useless. (this collar was a different make and model to the sprenger or trixie) I have a Trixie collar wich is virtually the same as Sprenger, and i have seen both makes come off. Id say these are the best collars in the world, but they do come undone. When used a lot the links work themselves loose and this is when the collar comes undone. BTW my cheapest collar that I own, a chrome plated one that cost me about $10 has never come undone. The design of the links is different to the HS one, its impossible for it to come undone nor for the links to work themselves loose with wear. But this colar will rust and the spikes arent rounded off.... Thats the collar - it fastens near the D ring

Im going to put it in the car tonight and give it to you when I see you. How embarrasing........ than again if you needed it you would have told me to give it back

I think its time to post yours back to you PAX, slap me for forgetting to do that earlier!! Anyway Pixi - its a good book, talks about training in drive as well as gives detailed instructions on how to teach certain excercises and what to avoid.
