Its also interesting to see them work in a pack. I have choocks here that we let out once day to hav the whole yard and I observe the dogs. Divani will stalk and round them up, where Rex will just stand in a strategic point and go for the "kill" he actually doesnt kill them of course but its interesting to see different actions by the members of the pack and which part of hunt they more participate in.

How To Teach Drop From A Stand?
MonElite replied to cassie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think you have a bit of a theory wrong. You can sucessfully train the dog in food DRIVE, but there is a difference between food DRIVE and food bribing. I think you meant training in PREY drive in your post. Many people teach the mechanics of an excercise using food and than move on to training/speeding it up/proofing the excercise in prey drive. I personally cant see anything wrong with that. There are dogs taht go from zero to million miles and hour in prey drive and are not so crazy about food and it is easier to teach them a behaviour with food rather than with a toy. If a dog has little prey drive but great food drive, the better drive to train it in would be food. -
Got yourself a toy boy Erny?? Are you a cougar?

HERE Ahhh. I've owned the collar for months. If I wasn't taking my time I'd have used it by now. I haven't. Good! Perhaps you should be aware of the way it came across. And Im all FOR the ecollars. I doubt you would have got the same responce if you said "I cant wait to get him to get the firs bite of a sleave." Good luck with your dog.

Same here. I do use a check chain (snake type) in the show ring as I think it looks nice, nicer than a martingale of any type. I instruct at an ob club and people use chceck chains, I have no problems with that, but would preffer them to use martingales.
-
There were countless repllies on the subject.... And as any threads on any forum they evolve, this one evolved to use of an ecollar on a young dog. Still a training tool.
-
Dont know for sure but I would think that many here would hope that whatever you write is to HELP people.

K9: It wasn't going to be a chargeable event, wasn't. Thanks for the compliments, I wont attack you in return though, I don't think its necessary, shame you do. I dont think that NB was attacking, maybe you are a bit paranoid. I went to a seminar by Ian Dunbar (and paid) and wouldnt go back. Seen it once and that was enough for me. Is he a bad trainer? NO he isnt! He is very successfull as a trainer and he markets himself well. Good for him!

10 weeks is slightly? OK.... As a suggestion, perhaps you could add further explanation to the thread in Puppy section for everyone to benefit.
-
K9: We make sure the fear period is over, clearly, which in mos dogs of both sexes is usually by 20 weeks, taking the safe line means 26 weeks. This isnt what you said about the fear impact period HERE
-
I shall go home and see YOUR book to see if there is a reference about age there too. My appologies if there isnt. Thats right, I got your book and a collar, you found a working level on my dog and off I went on my own. HERE ??? I dont give any advice about use of the ecollar. You do.

Perhaps she read the manufacturers recommendations of not using it on dogs less than 6 months old. Midols puppy is what? 3 months, he says he cant wait for the fear impact to be over which ends at roughly 16 weeks? I cant see anything wrong with Nekhbets recomendation to build the bond, build drive etc rather than strapping the ecollar on the dog at the first opportunity. Having said that, maybe but only maybe, Midol has hd the second fear impact period in mind and he wont use the collar till the dog is over 12 months old. Good luck Midol, you seem to be doing right things, but Im with NB, dont rush.

K9: Nice saying wonder where you heard that... wish I had thought of it oops maybe I did. Not exactly sure where I but maybe I've have heard it on a Leerburg video. I did. On the same token one could write Having stairs in your home would run more risk of injuring these immature bones than wearing an e collar...? What I think you tried to do is tell NB with some clever wording that she is wrong. Yes wearing an ecollar runs less risks than doing prey work, but we arent talking about just wearing the collar, but using it during training. Hence I conclude your point has no practical application in this discussion and is irrelevant. Ditto. Just want to say - I understood perfectly what you tried to say in all your posts.
-
jumping around can happen if the dog is wearing a flat or ecollar too. Hey try a treat the dog loves Good training is good training no matter what the method is. If someone is worried about over jumping in drive than prevent the over jumping.
-
K9: Training in prey drive would run more risk of injuring these immature bones than wearing an e collar...? How?? The dog is to do some sort of excercise, lets say a recall. What difference will it make if its doing it in drive or becouse it has been properly trained with ecollar? It still has to run the same distance.

So you over corrected and under rewarded your dog. I wont comment on the person that tought you, but perhaps something got lost in the translation of what the person said and what you thought they said.

Western Suburbs Dog Training Club (sydney)
MonElite replied to laffi's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I went there for a period of time, to the trialling classes. Its a normal club, perhaps a bit more positive than some others. There are couple of instructors there that are also at the Peakhurst Club. I think Kavik goes there on regular basis. -
thats a nice jump. but yes the wood be a bit heavy and pricey. My friend makes leather goods, I (well not only) come up with ideas for leads, collars, harnesses etc, she makes them for me and I road test them.

Oh WOW - thank you! it was said jokingly but I will be very happy to try the tug if you will make me one!!!

Informal Dol Training Club
MonElite replied to MonElite's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think that everyone should work on what they need to work on, not be constrained by what others do. Ruthless needs to teach Chopper a proper stand, and she needs to learn how to use her body as a cue t the dog. I know what I need to work on with my dogs and will practice that. Asked ruthless for some simple help and what she did for me was great. And we didnt have the dogs on the field together, Ruthless didnt want to kill me so I guess its not so bad not to have them all mingle all the time -
Informal Dol Training Club
MonElite replied to MonElite's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
We finished last night at 8.15 as I had to go, but if I had no reason to leave we would have been there longer. -
As a result of this thread we are now going to meet up on regular basis for some dog training. All gear is allowed. There is no official instructor, everyone is to help each other out and share the knowledge. We will try to invite some experts in various fields - obedience trialing, clicker work, agility, schutzhund, behaviour modification, tracking etc. Ruthless is the president , Im noone as its all informal, no joining fees to collect, no ground fees and no insurance to pay. Wednesdays 7pm at the Tempe Recreational Reserve Holbeach Ave Tempe. Its very close to the M5 motorway so even those living in the north or the west can relativelly quickly get there. From the south is just up the Princess Hwy. I will try to be there earlier most of the time. There is a fenced off leash free area near by. There is dirty water for the dogs to swim in. Bike track, kids playground on the other side of the reserve, a club to go and have a drink at. Ill add more info as we explore the place further. Any questions? Shout!

Where Can I Find A List Of Dog Clubs In My Area?
MonElite replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
We had a good little session. I think the grounds are very good, its about 10 football fields joined up and there are lights there. there were two fields used for sports, we took the furthest one away and it was perfect. Not only that but I also found a fenced leash free park just around the corner. And its also lit up after dark. In case the sports fields were all taken the lights from the dog park give enough onto the grassy area next to it that it would be possible to train next to the leash free area. I think its a good find and easy to get to, plenty of parking, not many houses around so no complaining neighbours about barking dogs etc. I definitelly want to go there again if others are keen. Plus I think the other part of the park needs to be explored, we can see whats the lighting there near the water.
