This is why people say OMG what a cruel tool. They dont look "friendly" do they? however if you ever get a chance put it on our arm or leg and give yourself a correction, and than do this with a check chain. You will see what hurts more.... and you will be very surprised.
-
I was trying to demonstrate that there is no difference in trainign a dog with some equipment just in the tools people use.... Head collar, prong collar or ecollar serve the same purpose. Neither of them is more or less possitive than the other. Ecollar I guess maybe a bit as the dog doesnt associate the stim with the handler, where it would with other tools.
-
Im going to change this to suit my situation I tried a prong collar with both my 2 dogs - dobermanns it worked a treat, in that once I had conditioned them to wearing it (still 'positive' in my mind) they walked beautifully on it, was happy to wear it and I never had to pull, jerk or anything else remotely associated with that. So for me, that was a positive training tool in my mind. Ill do one for Midol too I tried a ecollar with my young GSD - it worked a treat, in that once I had conditioned him to wearing it (still 'positive' in my mind) he walked beautifully on it, was happy to wear it and I never had to pull, jerk or anything else was in fact remotely associated with that. I didnt even issue a command. So for me, that was a positive training tool in my mind. How is that?

At least we are in agreement about prongs v's check chains
-
I have the same opinion. I think for an average Joe that walks the dog and doesnt want the dog to pull the "lets go for a walk" becomes a command. Some might call it trigger, just like putting the collar would be.
-
I never said it doesnt work, I said there there are more effective ways. OT - I really hate seeing a guy that lives down my street walk his dog. he had a GSD, now he has a bull type dog. They both pull like steam trains and the length of the street (about 600m) he must correct that dog 300 times with no effect whatsover on his current as well as the past dog. I have offered him that I show him what to do as it break my heart seeig his current dog practically drop to the ground each time it gets a massive correction, but no he knows what to do. Recent methof of his is a stick in his hand too, and each time the dog pulls he hits it on the nose. Amazing but true, the dog still pulls. Just walks cowering all the time now.
-
This is a typical method used by the average person down the road that has no idea abut rewarding the dog for correct behaviur, timing of the correction, environment to train etc. Hence most of the time its ineffective. However I agree that with the right handler and in a right environment it can work.
-
I see people do the second method you described all their lives and all they do is walk the dogs and correct them every 5 steps. Its not the best of methods Midol the one using the full 4 stages of the avoidance method rather thant he 2 you described is far more effective.
-
Im interested in the method you know for teaching the dog to walk on loose lead with no command, can you please give me a qucik description.
-
You do in the method/s I know.... including avoidance method. You didnt tell the dog a command when you were TEACHING it to walk on loose lead? No heel, no walk, no slow, no nothing? How was the dog to know what to do? If you know exactly what avoidance training is that you know that you can teach the the dog ANY command by avoidance method. Looking at the handler is just another motion for the dog, you can teach attention by avoidance too. There are some not so bad old videos on how to do it, not Leerburg, I unfortunatelly cant remember by whom, maybe someone else will tell us.
-
what do you call interest? A responce to a call/command? If yes than my answer is yes. If its not than Im speculating on whats your definition of interest and lets say its my dog following me all the time pestering me for something - than my answer is no. However - like with any tool used in an avoidance training - yes you can use a prong to teach a dog to pay attention to you. Actually replace the words ecollar with a words prong collar in you ecollar manual and you will get the idea. Should I write what is avoidance training? to make this easier for you to understand?

Along with any correctional tool, since it was used to correct the dog for not being interested in the handler.

First step you should take is not allow your dog to run up to other dogs. If he gets a large dog that dislikes full on dogs in its face the results arent going to be pretty. Keep your dog on lead or call it back before it has a chance to run up to another dog. -

The wouldnt have to out untill the handler gets to the criminal and the dog, would they? Doesnt matter really whats the theory behind it, I speak to an ex military trainer on occasion and he says that the military dogs are not trained to out as well as sch dogs are. From the horses mouth - I belive him.
