  1. I use two words HERE when I want the dog to just come near me COME when I want the dog to do a formal recall with a sit in front of me
  2. I think Im a responsible owner, but I wont talk about myself here but about one particular person that bought a pup from my litter last year. He had dobes before and was interested in a well bred pedigree dog. When my litter was advertised he filled in the enquiry form and it was a stand out, he answered all the questions just like I wanted them to be answered. BUT he had two very small kids and two SWF dogs so I was a bit reluctant as I worried that he wont have time for the dog, and the fluffies might become dobes breakfast if not careful. I asked and asked questions, and said the pup will need to be separated from fluffies for several months and how would this work, he assured me he will do it. He came over to my place with the whole familly to meet me and my dogs. He didnt ask me for a particular sex of colour, just said - you know my situation and you will know my dogs, give me a dog that will fit in to my family or if there will be none then tell me there are none. He got a crate and anything else I said to get before he got the pup. The day he picked up a pup he organised for a trainer that I recomended to be at his place on arrival with the pup to intorduce the pup to the other dogs and the kids. Later organised to have the trainer come over and give him some obedience lessons. He keeps in touch with me on regualr basis, if there is anything not 100% right with the dog I get a phone call and a request for advice. The dog is walked every day, gets off leash runs on the beach, is well behaved and gets on with anyone and everyone. I got invited to come over for a visit yesterday and we took my Furia and his dog for a run at the beach. I arrived in front of a beautiful, well maintained house, clear sign about the dog, and a secure area for the dog. We took the dogs to the beach, the dog is happy, well mannered, looks terrific, comes when called, doesnt bother anyone. It was a pure pleasure to see one of my dogs to be living is that household. Oh and the dog got desexed when I said its best to do it. The owner rang me to ask if its time and which vet to take him to, done extra health tests while there.
  3. This is why its important to know what level of correction can be issued to the dog. Last night I watched a rabbit chasing dog that jumped 1.5 meter fence and gone through barb wire in a frenzy to catch it, in my opinion that dog could not be taught to recall off the prey with pure positive methods. Mind you the dog has a pretty good recall as is. But maybe Im talking about re-training here not training from puppy, again. Hey I even watched a human in a frenzy of rabbit catching (barefoot) I wonder if he could be recalled He eventually came back by himslef but later then the dog
  4. Still images dont show enough but we had few videos. Id say that your video shows a dog with low prey drive, and as others explained some dogs are just soooooo desperate to get the toy, yours is not really that interested even when you touch him with it.
  5. You correct a dog for disobeying a command that has been previously learned that the dog knows. The stress of correction is the consequence of disobeying a leaned command. The positive reward is the pleasantness of obeying. It's not about yanking the dog around by the throat, it's about teaching the dog a command and teaching what is required from the command. Simple example the casual heel: You start of and command heel and praise the dog for being in the right place. The dog surges ahead.......aghhh.......a couple of leash pops and "heel" then praise the dog for returning to the correct position etc etc. When the dog has learned in bullet proof fashion to heel without distractions off leash.........the dog knows the command. Add some distractions like another dog approaching. Heel......the dog is in position and praised, then he see's the dog approaching and surges ahead, aghhh heel and he pulls to the end of the leash ignoring the heel command and a leash correction is admistered for ignoring the heal command. The correction is not the response for surging towards the other dog, the correction is for ignoring a known command which the dog has the choice of compliance or not. The dog learns that ignoring commands results in unpleasantness and complying with commands results in positive reward. The dog in this instance has learned right from wrong and the consequences of each chosen action. The dog will stay behind and heel without pleasure. Period. If you teach your dog like that you never have dog that wants to work. ( No drive) The dog will learn to expect punishment or wait for the ".......aghhh.......a couple of leash pops" Perhaps it depends on the original level of drive in the dog? Have you thought of that? Check out this thread, first dog there http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...tzhund&st=0 I perosnally know this dog and I ahve never seen anything more keen to work then him. And I can tell you that he has been corrected many times for missbehavior. He is also clicker trained and a SCHIII now. Nordernnstam Harley is his pedigree name, if one day you get an opportunity to see this dog work its pure pleasure. The willingness to work is just over the top. Again - this dog has been corrected but not over corrected. Mind you what level of correction this dog can receive is a lot higher then any of my dogs could.... And he springs back from the correction in a split second.
  6. You couldnt have this dog more tense then in this pic, this is when Im at lure coursig and waiting in line, the lure has just been relased for another dog, mine just spoted it and got all super tense ready to chase. Look what happens next Drive initialisation is when the dog has spoted something and is in the initial stages of drive. but not in full drive (such as chase) Drive has stages - in prey drive you have sight/scent of the prey, stalk, chase and catch My photos showed a dog in the sight and stalk mode and one of the bite in in the chase/catch mode.
  7. OK let me humanise what I was trying to say. A young guy gets his drivers licence. He is told not to speed as he will get caught and pay fines, also will loose the points and the licence. Now - some will drive carefully and be perfect, some will speed and not be caught and some will speed get caught and learn the lesson. And there will be those that will speed, loose the licence and still speed. Some dont need a correction, some need one and some you can whack on the head many times with little or no results. It just depends on the kid dog
  8. Oh have fun!!! She is great. Say hello to her from Monika with dobes from Sydney!
  9. Ill be boring I think when Ill say that I bought a car just so the dogs would have large booth, I installed hot water to go to the outside garden hose so when I wash them it wont be warm water. And wont mention how many thousands of dollars I had spend on them on various items for them, or training them or feeding them. All worth it tho
  10. Im always of an opinion that its easier, and quicker to traine a dog when you show them what is right and what is wrong. Show them right a lot more of course but if they are not corrected for doing wrong then they dont know its wrong.
  11. Ditto Sometimes its the whole lip, and I love when they realise it and try to tidy the lips up
  12. If she is so excited by the vest, use it as a training distraction. Put the vest on the ground and work her around it, reward her for attention on you and ignoring the vest. Make it easy for her to have sucsess!!!!! (so you remeber this part) She needs to work through this and know that the rewards come from you and not the magic vest. The magic vest is someitmes hanging on the dining chair and if there is a ball there she will go an nudge it but usually just ignores it. Ill try what you suggest Paxy, we will see what we can do. BTW this is the magic vest, how could someone not like it?
  13. thats great to hear and my question is - you have never used a correction? I also trained some of my dogs with a clicker and I cant see how the clicker wont go hand in had with a argh argh or a leash correction from time to time. Especially in the proofing stage.
  14. I went to one of them run by Steve Davies and really enjoyed it!! I will be going to more, thanks to PAX for inviting me!!!
  15. To me the word justify means that someone needs to explain themselves why they did something that was "wrong". If I follow my own definition then Im certainly not justyfing anything in this thread.
  16. I had a Dobe Club meeting last night at Erskine Park so I thought for a treat Ill take Rex there. He was asleep all the way there but the moment I turned from M4 into Mamre Rd he stood up and started whinging in excitement. Mamre Rd exit from M4 is 4-5 km away from the grounds. When I got onto the showgrounds he was going nuts in the car with exitement, knowing where he is. He hasnt been shown since 2004!!!! Its just amazing how animals remember things and places. I let him run around off lead in Utility ring he was sooooo happy! and peed on every ring post and every tree ;) . I think I made his day.
  17. Im all up for organising BATTUD - Ban All Things That Upset Dog Party.
  18. Most likely Especially to Olivia :D he loves girls
  19. He has a good life with me. When he was younger and my only dog I took him EVERYWHERE with me. Some of the places/events he attended were: protest against the war in Iraq Australia Day fireworks at Darling harbour Carols at Domain he has been on the boat countless nubmer of times, in a kayak, on the tyre being dragged behind a boat, on a plane, done thousands of km travelling in the car. I took him to work in the city once in a high rise building where I dare say no dog has ever been before. He has been to countless parks and forests, beaches, bush tracks, cafes, festivals and fairs. He ripped countless number of toys and beds, dug holes, and behaved like a naughty dog at times but all in all he has been pure pleasure to own and live with. He sneaks onto my bed now and then and these days I just pretend I dont see it And few people told me that after they die they would want to come back as my dog, but no dog will ever repace him, he is in a class of his own.
  20. The bestest of the best dogs ever, my sexy Rexy, officially known as Gr Ch Alldobe Strike It Lucky ET is 10 years old today. Rex has been a very sucessfull show dog winning BIS at Dobe Nationals in 2003, he is a multi BIS all breeds winner and has countless number of show ribbons and rozettes. Father, grand father and great grandfather to countless number of dogs, many of them being champions etc. He is my best friend, a dog that started it all for me, a dog that I waited nearly 30 years for. He understands full sentences, and as Ripley once said to me has wisdom in his eyes. I have a super bond with him and I understand his body lanugage and expressions in his eyes fully. I always said that I hope he lives to 10, and any day after will be a bonus, so from tomorrow onwards we start bonus days and I hope that I get many. He is not well and I wish he would last another 10 years but that will not happen, however he still rules the girls with one look they bow dont to him and dont question him. I served him prawns for breakfast, he will get chicken for dinner and liver as dessert. Attached is a show stacked photo of him that I took this morning.
