  1. basically thats what it is. How long? Depends only on you, your consistency of traiing and genetic make up of your dog. How long does it take to drink a beer? For you 3 minutes for me 23 minutes there are positive and negative drives. Dog can get satisfation form both, but for the purpose of training you want to use positive drives.
  2. learned helplessness - you know about the elephants that are tied up by the back leg when they are young. They grow up and easily can break of the line but never try. This is learned helplessness.
  3. or better a video camera But the rights to the info on the video are K9 copyright protected.
  4. buy yourself a tape measure and every night cut of 1cm of the tape starting form the highest number When you get to less than 5cm you will know it almost time ;)
  5. Read K9's posts again. There are 3 stages in training - learning, corretcion and proofing. There is no need to use corrections in learning stage - what are you going to correct if the dog doesn even know what to do? Dog needs to understand the command first before you can correct. oh and while I type I can see that the devil himself has appeared.
  6. Giving dog food rewards means that you work in food drive. Steves training is more about satysfying pray drive. Perhaps this is where you are getting confused. As to getting a dog to do something when its doing nothing - yes you need to initialise a drive first, and it can be done very quickly, one word command, or just the dogs name could initialise it - depending on the motivator and training. My most recent command to raise the drive is "where is the bunny?" And you can read a bit about this in this subject http://forums.dogzonline.com.au/index.php?showtopic=28457 Now I will put my "expert" advice aside and wait for K9 to return to strip my posts to bits
  7. Amhailte - you can spend couple of days reading posts that Steve has wrote here over the years (BTW some make very entertaining reading) and there are many examples of this. Try from his oldest posts, than go back to page about 49-50 and there is a perfect explanation in there. Not that I actually know all his posts of by heart, just happend to read it this morning. But you did have it more or less right. How is this better than food, what are you going to offer your dog when its not hungry as a motivator?
  8. IF the redirected agression was a case - yes I have heard of it as well, wouldnt it be considered handler problem/fault? If the dog is fitted with an antibarking collar (as a training/management tool) shouldnt it be isolated from distractions in the learning phase? Surly, so its a handler problem that left that dog with others. Leave it on its own while it learns not to bark than introduce destractions. JMHO.
  9. Last night I almost run over someones pet bunny on the street. It took me and OH 30 minutes to catch it and we took it home. Well... my dog has gone mental and while I carry the bunny around he does everything, extra fast just so that I let him sniff the bunny.... Not that its a treat as such But so far I have not had a better motivator ever for my dog..... Wonder how would an obiedniece judge react if I took bunny into the ring... do you think it would work ?
  10. Why do you put a check chain on than? Would flat leather collar suffice?
  11. OMG - now I will have to bring that cake........ As to celebrations - I guess we can celebrate at the end of the day if no dogs will "eat" each other
  12. Dont tempt me Is the lawn mowed? Your dogs ready to do a performance in front of audience? Champagne in the fridge? (French champagne that is ) Are you prepared to be invaded by a flock of black and tans? If I get any NO answers than no poppyseed cake ;) ;)
  13. This is like saying - I DONT like Chinese food, never tried it, never been to a Chinese restaurant, but have heard of a guy that got sick after eating something not even sure if it was Chinese. And I will never try Chinese food, I've done a brief search on the internet about the taste.
  14. Charlotte - Kurrajong Heights is the last suburb past Windsor in North West, bordering on Blue Mountains. Will let you know about 9.07, as I have someone enquiring already, but for now if you want I can put you on the 20.08 list. PM me your email address please.
  15. Seminars are at Steve place at Kurrajong Heights in Sydney. I do send out all necessary info privatelly for those attending any of the dates. hang on tight Kavik ;-)
  16. Someone just pulled out from the 9.07 seminar. So I have 1 spot left if anyone is interested.
  17. I can think of dozens reasons why I would NOT send my dog to doggy daycare. One would be that he is a fairly dog agressive entire doberman male and most likely would not be accepted into the care. BTW thankfully he doesnt constantly bark and I dont have to get an anit bark collar or think of a doggy sitter for him...
  18. I am qualified physio, but have not been praciticing for years. Any equipement that is made for muscle or nerve stimulation in physiotherapy is designed in a way that even if put on the highest level by an accident will not cause damage. Yes it can cause discomfort and potentially some pain. I stress - if used CORRECTLY none of the physio equipement would cause pain or any discomfort. I imagine that any electronic equipement designed for use with dogs would do the same. So CORRECT use of any electoronic collar will not be causing discomfort to the dog.
  19. No greentea, there is no law agains OWNING a docked dog.
  20. Physiotherapy has been using various currents to treat various muscular and nervous deseases for years and years. So there is no doubt that they work.
  21. I wouldnt do it. Have heard horror stories from way too many people. BTW NOT about Harnob. Harnob also runs small group classes, where they will teach you, perhaps choose that option. There is only 1 person that I would trust with my dog to be send away to, but that person doesnt take dogs in for training as he is a believer that an owner should train the dog. Join your local obiedience club (or go to Harnob) they will teach you how to teach your dog.
  22. I have send an emial today to those attending the 9.07 one. If I missed anyone please let me know
  23. Afton as much as agree with your training methods they are appropriate enough when there are no distractions. My dog will do all of the excercises he knows with no problems when the distractions are small. But put lets say a bitch in season near him, or a full of himself male - that is a different story. These are big distractions for my dog, for some is the ducks, cats or whatever. My dog recalling over a jump with no distractions http://lukrowi.pl/galeria/index.php?p=2&id...re=6174#section And as I said even with distractions my dog will do everything extremly well with long line attached. Unclip the line add distractions and off he goes... BTW I dont own an electronic collar, however I can't wait patiently enought until I get one (soon) We will have to agree to disagree, I doubt that you have ever felt the electronic collar on your skin thats why you have this opinion. I cause far more pain to my dog using a check chain and majority of people have no problems with using one.
