Using Drive In Basic Obedience
MonElite replied to Lablover's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think what yu want to say is that Zoe changes into guard drive (from prey) and Diesel stays in prey (thats why he is not bothered about other dogs) yes? -

this was in between the two. I hope you can see which one is which (one has a pinkish collar on) I will add that all this was VERY vocal -

I've got 2 for you. What can you tell from those? -
One day when I "con" him to going to Poland for some semianars you can just drive and attend Or perhaps we could organise a K9 Force Tour of Europe 2006 for him? What do you think?
-
oh yes I read the rules of the jump again... I was thinking more along the lines of - get the ladder if you smart enough. Going now, my parachute is closing for today. LOL For those that didnt get the parachute line... The mind is like a parachute, works a lot better if its open.
-
I will only add to this that if the $500 is replaced with $5milion some will attempt.

"issue a command & immediately move your arm back, dog will get a leash correction no matter how fast he moves." this is how it should have been worded - these are not my words BTW. NOTE - this is to improve the speed of the excercise not to teach the dog new word.
-
K9 - your signature shoud say 1. Dog trainer blah blah what you already have 2. Casual advisor on training your OH 3. Spell checker extrodinaire, selector of appropriate words to express "stuff" Mine should say; 1. English is my second language, if you dont understand feel free to pick my sentences to bits. 2. snake charmer 3. Owner of stressed killer dobe
-
K9 - Here 'tis .... thats right. He KNOWS the command this is not teaching a new word. Yes the choice of words was not very good on my part. Instead of "while" I perhaps should have said immiediately after, or a split second after.
-
I dont know if Im correct, but I will assume that K9s method is copyright and I will not disclose it. All I can tell you is that it works. Of course it depends on you and the efforts you are prepared to put in, its training not magic. Take a ticket and stand in the line to see K9
-
K9: can you show me where that was said? I cant see it.. It may happen when your about to start weaning, but not at the start. Perhaps it could have been read from one of my posts (about the dog jumping to the car) Im am sorry if I confused anyone by my poor abilities to explain the method. The dog KNOWS the command just chooses not to do it. Hence go back a step (not to the learning stage but to the training stage) and issue a correction immiediatelly or almost at the same time as command, to improve speed of the compliance.
-
My methodology is K9s metodology..... I have used the sequence of command, wait for comply, correct reward in the past. My dog has learned several commands and could perform them without corrections. However recall was not ideal. I have trained recall the way K9 prescribes and the results were much faster than from the methods I have used in the past. The dog does get the opportunity to comply, and it can avoid a correction by performing an excercise extra fast. Call me K9s follower, I wont mind.

Kavik command, correct, comply, reward
-
I did all that as well, of course! However I also thin the dog might misunderstand come for chas me. Might fail to perform if the smells are more interesting. And as I have converted to K9s teachings LOL I think that learning is to be performed away from distractions at first, hence if there is nothing more interesting than me the dog will come to me regardless of my command. Not to say that I wouldnt reward this, of course I would, but is the dog learning the meaning of the word? Also I assume that you do all this on a long line correct? Im not negating any methods, I jsut think that stay is an essential part of a come at some stage, sooner or later.
-
So are you saing that the following puppy will learn the word by the time its 6 months and than you proof? In my OB club we teach at first - very bigginers to do a U turn recall but one class up from this and they have to do it from the end of the lead, hence they need some kind of a stay for that. This is puppy classes, although ocassionally we get adults in there as well.

tell me more
-
how do you teach come if a dog follows you? surly you will need to have some distance between your dog and you at some stage. So IMHO eithere a stay or another person holding a dog would be usefull. Im here to learn, maybe I dont know something....
-
I'll give you a perfect description of the reactive program. We finished training/walk/run and my dog needs to get in the car. he is tired and I have a 4WD so its a bit high to jump up. I open the door say hop, he stares at me and the height of the booth and doesnt comply. So I check him and majority of the time he jumps up. That means that I am being reactive. If I was proactive I would open the door walk faster, check while I say hop and he would not think twice about not jumping into the car.
-
I totally agree with the sentence about nothing more important in dogs volcabulary than the word COME, but you need a stay to teach that.... or another person, tether to be able to walk off from the dog. As to toilet training, observe your poodle cross for the signs of attempting to go to the toilet. They sniff around, go in a circle couple of times, tahn squat. When she goes to squat, pick up say arh arh, run outside placeon the grass and if it takes 3.5 hour for her to do it than wait 3.5 hours to praise for doing it in the right spot.

I guess this would bring you to this what K9 said, And to my point that zing is an innefective correction, especailly off lead.
-
Would I be correct than that the zing would have the same effect if you put the flat collar on your dog and zinged the chain in your hand?
-
Just to clarify Erny. I did the same as you, my dog considered a zing of a chain a correction (we are still to agree to dissagree on the differences of the sound). So I have used the zing effectivelly on lead. Well it went all out the door as the zing has no effect off lead. My super smart (yes this has been established before in another threat) dobe is collar smart, lead smart, zing/no zing smart. Hence I find the zing an innefective overal method. And to follow from that - I'm looking for alternatives.
-
What is the point of doing the zing and not correcting on lead? Reminder? if so than how do you issue a reminder off lead?
-
mine hears a command, do you shake a chain and give a command?
