The WHY woman perhaps thought that all dogs that go to a park are friendly.... We were in a leash free park, our 3 dogs were happily chasing a ball together, looks innocent enough I guess. Mind you hers was a BC or aussie shepherd ours are a mally, dobe and a GSD, some numbers and size dissadvantages for the BC.....

Zia - thank you. Im also an owner of a dog with personal space issues and battle every day with it. I guess I needed to know that there are people out ther that realise that and have ability to put themselves in my shoes. The other day my dog played with his two friends in the park and a dog run towards us from a distacne. 2 out of 3 dogs immidiatelly on lead and we yell to the owner of a wonderfull BC to call her dog. She yells back - dont worry she is OK. We yell but ours arent!! Instead of calling her dog that is quickly approaching our dogs critical distance and going pass it she yells back WHY??????? WHY - if we knew why we would fix it, but we dont kow and we try to fix it with really extremly small results. I am also starting to accept that my dog has a handfull of friends and there really isnt a need to add any more to his circle.

Alibear some tounge hanging out photos for you to compare. http://lukrowi.pl/galeria/index.php?p=2&id...re=3535#section http://lukrowi.pl/galeria/index.php?p=2&id...re=6178#section http://lukrowi.pl/galeria/index.php?p=2&id...re=6872#section This is after a big run - most likely 30 minutes after the run... I put a wet cold towel on him as he couldnt cool down - but it was in summer on a very hot day. http://lukrowi.pl/galeria/index.php?p=2&id...re=4462#section All of those were taken when the dog was really tired and run a lot for a considerable amount of time. Mine will be breathing extremly hard to the extend that he almost coughs, or makes a simmilar type of a tone. That is a sign that this is perhaps a bit too much. but daily he runs and pants and breathes heavily. I worry more about his joints more than about the breath. He seems to be hurting next day after an overexcercise day. I hope that helps

Tarka what are you doing on DOL - you meant to be WORKING this morning

At the QLD specialty show/obiedience just recently there were 2 V Forrell dobes, both in Obiedience and both got top placings. From memory they also competed at agility and jumping getting top placings as well. The bithc that I have mentioned before is certainly from V Forrel lines, but might not have the same prefix thats all. She is very Euro looking, and in Oz show ring would most likely not be doing that well. I feel she was actually quite nice, very short and not oversized. Full of beans on the temperament side. Yes in Europe Sch titles are a breeding requirement. That is BH for a bitch and Sch I for a dog. Plus hip Xrays and show scores (3 excellent for a dog, very good for a bitch) None of that in Oz.... I dont want to start the temp subject here, this has been done to death always ending in arguments.
-
First of all Sch is not a popular sport in Oz. At the sch club you will be lucky if you see 10 dogs all up, thats in Sydney 4 milion people live here. Von Forell have the reputation of the working lines, but from what I know they dont breed dobes any more, I might be wrong. Von Forrell is in Victoria Im in NSW. Seen one Von Forrel bitch at the Sch club, thats all. In fact she could well have had a different prefix. There are some people that try to combine the show and working lines. Try looking at Fireaxdobes.com

Noone at the workshop did. Noone at the previous workshops I organised with Steve did. Why do you ask?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder......... preffer black and tan to black and white

Tarka - get ready for tomorrow :p Im equiped with more information How is the loose leash walk going? you will be tested tomorrow!
-
It takes a bit of thick skin, but you can do it :p When people aproach me and Rex is OK I always move away anyway. I ask - boy or girl if a boy I politely say - OK must be going now or we will have a war happening as my dog is not very friendly. People usually look and understand, but yes there are those that will say - have some faith in your dog let him play...... I look at my dogs body language and make an assesment. I ask the person to keep the dog on lead and than I move closer to the other dog. Watch the dog and make a decision than. This is not a common thing I do, 99% of the time I just say - NO, I dont thinks so and walk away anyway. Majority of agression happends in the first 3 seconds of the dogs meeting so you can make an assesment staight away. Melliski - I basically would not be in the situation like you describe, I wouldnt let anyone be near me close enough to talk to me. I know sh*t happens sometimes and someone will pop out from around the corner, but in an open area I would call the dog way before someone would get close to me to start a conversation. I more or less know my dogs critical distance, and make it triple the lenght and basically noone is allowed in that circle, unless I have him on lead. When I say not allowed - I move away far enough. if it means run I run. Becouse I have a good recall and know the critical distance I can move away from whoever and let my dog run around within the critical distance and call him before he goes to close to the other. But if one runs towards us - yeah big problem.......

The rest

Dobies

Kavik - it takes practice :-) and a bit of forward thinking, open eyes all the time, noticing what dog goes where etc.
-
Yep - Im one of those people with one of those dogs...... Didnt know any better and was told not to let my dog get away with any signs of agression. So growl = correction hackels up = correctio Bark = correction etc How wrong was that advice!!!! Now he shows little body language warning signs before he wants to have a go at another, and he is very quick..... I have learned since then and noone handles my dog (except K9 Force) I dont go near the dogs if I dont feel like starting WWIII, I dont correct for worning signs. If any instructors would ever tell me to go near a dog that I dont feel my dog would accept I'd tell them to go and get lost. In fact on regular basis I walk out from certain excecises in a class (weaving between dog - I alwasy skip) I do on regular basis (not often enough) attempt to slowly decrease the distance between my dog and other dogs (desetitize) but I have been shown what to do, what to look for, how to approach, when to turn around etc. Never forcefully etc. if you dont know how to do it, dont attempt it, you might staff up your own and someones dog more than they already are. My dog has few selected friends and plays with them, every one else is an enemy and I have accepted that. What I do reccomend is that you train a super duper recall for yoru dog, that way you can call your dog and avoid sticky situations.

Coming back from the snow we unfortunatelly run over a rabbit. It died under the wheels of the car instantly. :p I said to the friend - stop I will take it and give it to the dog to eat, hubby and friend said, dont it might be full of worms or deseases and your dog might get something by eating it. What do you think? is a roadkill rabbit safe to give to the dog to eat? BTW we didnt take it.

Lure Coursing 21 August Erskine Park

My non luring dobe At least I dont have to wave my hands and chase the dog for him to come back -
I think of feeding my dog in a simmilar way way I feed myself. I rather have a meal freshly prepared from quality ingredients than a frozen packaged one full of preservatives. I dont feel that good each time I have a Big Mac.... imagine how I would feel if I ate that every day.... Can of dog food is in my mind a Big Mac for a dog. Given occasionally will not do any harm, fed daily - makes you wonder what does it do.... Nylabone - what did the dogs 50 years ago chew on? when there were no Nylabones?????
-
One has a brain one has a beauty....... One day I will have one with both!

Lure Coursing 21 August Erskine Park
MonElite replied to poodlefan's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I went with my dog, but he decided that it was not a day that he will chase the lure. His lure (his daughter) wasnt there and replacement dogs (Casimas) just didnt do the trick for him. Can wait to see the photos! -
Fat???? Will put some more up tomorrow. BTW pucksapunch, Ruben is just fabulous ;) Are you sure you dont want to swap ? ;) if I ever hear bad word about him from you, you will be in trouble
