  1. This thread needs photos :P (oh, and I really really SUCK at coming up with names!)
  2. c25k week 2 day 3 done, yay! I have actually found the last 2 runs somewhat easier cardio-wise than I had expected, I am still definitely working up a sweat but I am doing it comfortably now and not feeling like I am pushing myself too hard, which is great My poor knees are aching tonight though The malinut is definitely enjoying the extra activity and higher pace, too. Hope we can all manage to keep up the motivation to get some excercise in over winter, and Daisy good luck shaking that cold!
  3. Will have to set that one up to record as we are out training on Wednesday nights, thanks for the heads up
  4. I have had in the past a very agro people aggressive dog, that came on 4WDing trips and other assorted excursions, but he was always ALWAYS caged on the back of the ute, or leashed and muzzled when he was out of the cage. I also made sure any travelling companions or nearby campers knew that he wasn't friendly and to leave him alone. He used to have a ball! The silly woman that you encountered should have had her dog on a leash, off-leash area or not >_<
  5. Is there any way you could leave your foster in the car while you are training your own dog? If classes are at night when the sun will not cause temperatures in the car to skyrocket it might be a better idea than a tie-out or heavy crate. Good luck finding a solution, must be frustrating
  6. Gah. We all know that 'responsibility' may as well be a swear word when it comes to teenagers these days... >_< Then again it was America... Either way, poor bloody dog
  7. I can see the puppy millers just setting up multiple operations, I don't think a dog limit would stop them... maybe limiting to 20 dogs under 6mths might have an effect... allows for large litters and in most cases 2 litters on the ground at once but would possibly stop continual breeding of multiple dogs. That poor pitbull I don't know how anyone could leave their dog alone in those sort of temperatures:(
  8. Just because it's being worn doesn't mean it's safe! If they can grab a hold of any part of it they can manage to chew it to bits! Some carpet inside his kennel - I would line the whole thing including the roof, but if it's nicely sealed and draught-free that probably isn't neccessary - with a nice thick blanket flap over the door to keep the warm air in should do the trick If you keep your eyes open it's possible to score carpet off-cuts for free, and a nice thick blanket (that you should be able to get multiple 'doors' out of) shouldn't cost more than $15 at an op shop...
  9. BRRR! Daisy you really do need some nice warm wooly thermals LOL It's around the 11* mark here in Ipswich already, and it's only gunna get colder as the night goes on Decided to get off my arse and do c25k week 2 day 1 to warm up some, managed to complete it, YAY! :D
  10. Go walk your dog and then post about it! :P The weather here in Bris has been warmer the last few nights, but very humid during the early mornings, I made the mistake of leaving my car opened up the other night (as I am never far from it), and when it came time to head home in the morning everything was soaked, seats, steering wheel, gearstick was even wet LOL :/ Good thing I have the sort of vehicle that a little water doesn't bother...
  11. c25k week 1 day 3 done, yay! Will be attempting the week 2 program next week but might have to repeat week 1, I am so unfit
  12. I can completely understand why people with multiple dogs who aren't always supervised would not want to leave collars on. I am definitely not saying that all dogs should have collars on all the time. I just reckon they are a good thing - especially to hold contact details - if the dog is not at high risk of getting itself caught up. *shrug*
  13. My definition of 'loose' is not flapping in the breeze, but simply not so tight that the collar cant easily slide over the dogs head if pulled. Most dogs (in my experiences anyway) seem to instinctively want to back out of things when they do get caught up. edit to say - IMO microchips aren't the be-all and end-all... In a lot of cases having a phone number on a collar will result in the dog being returned much quicker, and often without council/pound involvement. I have seen chips move around quite significantly in some dogs - a mate's staffy now has hers in one of her front legs, about 3/4 of the way down. I'm also led to believe that there are several different chip registries? How long does it take to retrieve data? Yes they are a good form of permanent ID, but I would not rely soley on them....
  14. LOL SecretKei, I did think about those slide-on ones, but I wouldn't be able to get them onto the collar that I leave on him as it is 8mm round nylon with rings on either end (and his flat collar is way too thick, and I don't leave it on him anyway) I like the look of the custom embroidered collars... hmmm, stuff to think about!
  15. Thanks folks but I had in mind the ones similar the council tags that loop around the collar and clip back into themselves. Damn Perhaps then a stiff leather flat collar (hard to twist) that has been left loose enough to slip off?
  16. I definitely would not say you are doing the wrong thing by leaving collars on your dogs! Having easily accessible and readable info attached to your dog can only be a good thing, IMO. I would however suggest getting a break-away collar, or leaving a flat collar loose enough that it may slip over the dog's head if they were to get it caught on something. The malinut wears a thin nylon slip collar (locked off with a clip) when he is at home, so I have something to catch him by if needed. I should really also work on getting some form of ID and phone number attached to it, but I don't want a metal tag that will rattle and make noise, and I'm not sure where to get custom plastic ones
  17. Can I suggest a martingale instead? Will be a little kinder on her neck (and less likely to slip off accidentaly!). I have found some good ones at K9Pro http://www.k9pro.com.au/categories.php?cat...tingale-Collars and I'm sure if he doesn't have one small enough to fit he can order in or direct you to where else you may find them
  18. You definitely CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Mythbusters have proved it too :P I would enrol her in obedience classes asap Even going down there with so many dogs around she may be very excited on her first night, but after a while the novelty will wear off and she will calm down - this may even be enough to stop the issues on walks. If not start teaching her focus (look or watch) and if you can get her to focus while walking do that, and then reward when you are past the other dog, or if you can't manage it while walking, move off to one side, put her in a sit, and ask for focus until the other dog has passed, then make a big fuss of her Good luck with it, and good on you for not thinking that just because your dog is small that it's 'cute', or that they are allowed to get away with it!
  19. A good set of thermals might help with winter outings? I have been looking at some Under Armour gear ( http://www.underarmour.com/ ), but I haven't managed to come up with the spare cash to order from the US yet (as I can't find anywhere that stocks what I want locally :/ ). I have bought some Heat Gear (stuff for when it's hot) from them previously, a singlet and compression shorts to wear under my uniform, and it's definitely good! No more sitting around feeling sticky after some exertion at work No experience with the Cold Gear yet but I have heard good things about it
  20. c25k week 1 day 2 complete... Once again the malinut is wondering why we don't keep going, and I am ready to fall over! I don't want to hijack this thread, but I would like to keep posting results, kinda makes me accountable and I am taking the malinut with me lol... would anyone like to join me? There is an iPhone/iPod app available, and also one for those who have Android phones (who get it free, lucky buggers lol) and more info can be found here... http://www.c25k.com/ edit to say - I would make a separate thread in this mystical off-topic I keep hearing about, but I can't access it yet....
  21. It is definitely possible for birds of prey to take pups I personally would be roofing any runs that I built, but then I own a pretty agile breed!
  22. LOL this thread has gone rather off-topic... As far as harnessing your dog to the bike goes, I don't know if it'd be legal or not, but a mate of mine who used to be a courier and had a little JRT X who would ride along with him, used a leash attached to a harness on the dog that he then sat on... so whilst in motion and all good, dog is secure... but in the event of an off, both rider and dog can get away from the bike
  23. My next pup is definitely getting taught to ride pillion with me! I think it would be nigh on impossible to get the malinut to stay put, there is just too much shit he wants to chase, we wouldn't make it up the street lol oops - edit to add: I really think as far as utes go you are better off with a crate - if you want them to be able to stick their heads in the breeze get a nice big wire one... I have seen a harnessed dog get ropes all tangled up causing the clip holding them to come undone, dog went out the back at 100kph, was very very lucky to get away with gravel rash and a lot of bruising!
  24. As others have said trapping probably isn't going to be the most successful method of getting rid of possum... you're better off trying to block up access to your roof cavity and make it an unpleasant place to be - KelpieHoundMum has some good ideas! Years and years ago when I first moved out of home I lived in a caravan beside an old queenslander that was surrounded by trees, good possum habitat apparently... the little bastards used to leap off the roof of the house, or out of the trees, down onto my caravan, and land with an almighty bang that shook the thing O.o I learnt to sleep through it after about 6 months and a lot of "OMG WTF was THAT?!" middle-of-the-night blood running cold wake-ups... but none of my friends who stayed over ever came back LOL!
