Then your next best alternative is to get a slip / show lead. This doesn't actually have a separate collar & leash, but if you go to some dog shows you will be able to pick one up and they slide down to fit any size neck! Julz you are not having a great run at all!!!!!!! You said that the poor dog was on concrete - I believe that there is legislation in place that prevents dogs from being housed 24/7 on concrete without respite? Might pay to enquire about the laws at the local pound before you ring the council and use some of the available literature to encourage your neighbours to exercise and socialise the dog. In saying that - I do not envy you one bit. So many problems arise over the fence over our pets and this sounds like one of them brewing for you! I guess your best outcome would be to hope the rent gets put up so high they have to move! (ADD: can you discuss the issues with the real estate that they are under perhaps rather than starting a council feud?)

all of the toys, chews, bones are a great idea and will help, but if you have a nice small area that you can sit on a chair with your pup, maybe you could work on some of the more basic obedience commands like "watch" "sit" "drop" and teach him a couple of new tricks like "bow" and "shake". Might help to keep him mentally occupied as well as helping with bonding with you?

When I place pups in pet homes I suggest that they look at cat collars or harnesses. Cat collars are generally made of thinner material and are elasticised and a harness places no pressure on the windpipe at all. Just take the bell off the cat collar and possibly put some extra holes in it!

Debarking............. I had never even contemplated what that was about or intended for until I inherited a male in March this year. He is absolutely stunning, outgoing, friendly and as one person previously put it - "would bark at a fly farting"! Cannot tell you how grateful I am that his previous owner had been whacked with a nuisance order and had him de-barked! I love him to pieces, but if he had his entire voice I am CERTAIN that I would be inviting trouble from my suburbia, dogless neighbours. I do believe it is a case by case basis, and as the OP seems to have followed every reasonable avenue known then in this case, I would have to say that it may be the best possible outcome for her and her furkid! (BTW - the dog has no idea that he has had the volume turned down - he still runs around opening his mouth to all who will look!) LOL

I agree with Fifi - there is no medical benefit from letting your girl have a litter, and I am sure you are aware from your experiences with your mum, that breeding can be as rewarding as it is heartbreaking. If you only intend to keep your girl as a pet and her breeder did not indicate to you that she thought she would make a contribution to bettering or maintaining the breed, then just go on ahead and enjoy your girl for the lovely pet that Im sure you have. As for your friends looking for pet - why dont you refer them to the breed that you purchased your girl from, you were obviously very happy with your pup? EDIT - its really nice to see an informed discussion without attacking the OP or forcing beliefs on someone. A nice thread to read guys!

why did you do that? geniune question, if it was your dad's house and that was his wish why do it? My dad knows that If I am coming over for a visit the dogs are coming too. Thats my condition for visiting. I dont like to leave my dogs at home on their own and have only done so twice for a short period because I had no other choice. It was raining that day so they could not stay in the backyard and I had no intention of leaving them in the car. They were crated inside because it was the easiest option. Besides I am obviously having a good influence on him. The other day he actually helped me walk my dogs! I may have to record the "incident" for posterity! :D hehehehe @ Tubbles My boss was really terrible when we built our new office (BTW he loves dogs & I have had them at work previously). He decided that during the building process that I could bring two of his favourites out for site inspections, but they MUST not come on the carpet. After the building was completed and we were working in the "new office" I had a phone call to say that the said "two favourites" had escaped and one had been picked up by the pound - but no sign of the other. He promptly sent me out on dog patrol to find her and bring her back to work, and you guessed it, she ended up under his desk, being fed chicken on the "NEW CARPET"! I think your dad is a closet dog lover looking to pinch your furkids!!

WOW - I have just read through all of these pages and watched one heck of a deterioration in conversation. I don't think the OP set out to offend anyone, but they obviously have. I for one would never sneak any of my dogs into a hotel room - I would be disgusted if someone tried to sneak a cat or some other unwelcome creature into my home or workplace (some hoteliers do live on site), but I have spoken with family friends who own a hotel and arranged to have two of my dogs stay overnight. They were more than happy to have them there on the condition that they were kept in the bathroom (didnt even stipulate crates). I was told I was welcome to stay with my furbabies any time. I think that sometimes it is a matter of just being open and honest with the hotelier and being prepared to hear a "NO". And im really sorry guys, but the allergy thing just doesn't cut the mustard with me - I hear your point, but if you are really allergic to dust, pet hair, dander and anything else that you might find day to day, then the last place you would WANT to stay would be a motel I would think? They do their best to keep them clean, but none of us REALLY believe that they are spotless do we? :rolleyes:

Incavale are in Sydney and do attend shows at Erskine Park regularly. Judith is very helpful and more than willing to talk to you about the breed. (I love them, just dont have room for one!) I know that they have just homed from their last litter, but I'm not sure whether they have any more planned / due!

Hi Asal, I have met the man, and I can honestly say when I first started showing - a friendlier more helpful person I could not have met my first time out filling entry forms for myself! It is my understanding from various conversations with others that many showfolk have absolutely no idea how much Tom assists in making so many of our shows run so smoothly - if he is to turn his back on the dog world after being stabbed in it then it will be a terrible loss. And I know so little about him in comparison to the many of you DOLers who have been around far longer than me! I hope the dog world wakes up and votes and is counted correctly on behalf of this man!

I too have a survival story to share - with a 8week old Chihuahua. I had her at work for an hour as I was leaving straight from work to go on Xmas holidays (wonderful boss here!) We had put baits in the roof cavities as we had a plague of mice & rats some time beforehand. My Chi puppy was playing for ages underneath our photocopy cabinet and I can only assume that the rodents had dragged some bait under there because what happened over the next 48 hours was heartbreaking! In the morning she was very quiet, but still ate some breakfast (just figured she was overexcited & tired from previous day's activities). Left her at home with other dogs to go to family lunch. Came home found her laying on cold laundry tiles - very lethargic & immediately called her breeder. Was told that it was possibly "sugar drop" (very plausible in small breed) and was advised on how to get her up and running again - which all worked perfectly! Go to bed, wake up in morning to near lifeless puppy in her basket. Straight to car for 45min drive to the vet (bawling all the way!) Jan Spade (Miracle Worker) took one look at her, thought she was a goner, and proceeded to treat her with vitamin K and fluids. Three days of home nursing, Vit K needles, heat pads, glucose and piles of gentle cuddles and we finally had a puppy that looked like she was going to pull through. When we went back to Jan, she told us that she really thought she would not make it as she was so tiny and there was no way of knowing how much poison she had eaten. I am forever indebted to that woman! Six years on and this lovely Chi girl has given me two beautiful litters and is the absolute apple of my eye. Please don't lose hope - she was tiny, her treatment was based on guesswork - you got to your furkids and your vet armed with all of the information and time that allows you the best chance of recovery! Thoughts & prayers are with you!

I know of someone from another breed who had it done for her and did it for someone else - but its not something that I would do. I show to have fun, have not yet titled a dog (would love to and am halfway there). I absolutely cheered for a friend, while standing next to her, while her bitch beat my dog for BOB to gain her last point - never been so happy to be beaten in all my life and I'm sure she would not have loved her last points and win as much if I had pulled my dog out!

I have read a fair few posts in relation to these things, but am still not completely clear on Oscars Law as currently proposed. (I know I will sound like a bit of a dummy). I am trying to explain to a non-doggie person how Oscar's Law will negatively impact on my ability to breed future dogs and cant quite find the right explanation, so I was hoping that you guys might be far better informed than me. I have only ever bred 4 litters since being registered 3 years ago. Three litters via Caesarian. Sold 3 puppies, gave away 3 and kept one. Currently house 5 adults of my own breed (3 show, 2 pets), and am looking after 2 others. Also have my daughter's GSD on my property. By no means would I ever have been classed as a breeder breeding for profit or a puppy farmer - BUT, from what I have read on our boards in the past couple of days, should the proposed Oscar's Law go through as is, then I will not even be able to do what I have outlined above. Guys, I know that eliminating puppy farms is an absolute must, but I really feel sick that the only people out there who are having an impact on the public are people who tack an agenda on to the end of a good intention! How can I explain Oscar's Law in plain english to my work colleague and how can we all have more of an impact to do the right thing by the dogs and by the ethical breeder?

Guarantee he was fretting like crazy - I know one of my girls would not cope at all in unfamilar surroundings if I had to leave her! Last time I was away I had to have a friend stay at my house because I knew she wouldn't eat otherwise. (the other Chi's don't care just as long as ANYONE gives them food!) Hope she is able to bring him back into condition without too much trouble...........poor little man!
