  1. Thanks Bonnie! So do I pick one thing...like coming when called and then just practice that everyday until she gets it THEN move onto the next thing ... like sitting or whatever OR Do I teach a few things at a time and practice each during each 5 min training session? Also would I be using a verbal cue....like "Poppy come!" then giving her a treat when she does it?
  2. So I have read now a few times of people doing 5 min training sessions with their puppy... I am a first time puppy owner and a tad clueless so please indulge me! 1. WHAT do you train them to do? 2. HOW do you train them?
  3. Poppy pawed at her colar when we first put it on her. We started a week ago and left it on for short bursts. Then my fiance was at home for two days and got her used to wearing it all day. Its a very light purple one...very similar to the one you described!
  4. Thanks everyone! I'm REALY not comfortable with teaching her to leave them alone. She is only 8 weeks and the 'uh uh' or 'no' doesnt work all of the time and I would HATE for it to fail when I needed it to work....IYKWIM. We have gone out on the lead 2 nights in a row and nothing. She HATES the lead! And will NOT pee/poo while on it! Lol! I do have a playpen set up outside but she is still getting used to being in it. I know if I put her in there and waited around she would cry blue murder and then if I were to leave her out in it I would worry about a toad getting in! Can you tell I'm a pathetic first time Puppy owner who stresses about EVERYTHING! Haha!
  5. The microchip needle isn't huge at all. The Toy Poodle in my avatar didn't even flinch when she was done. Stay with your dog and remain calm for her sake unless you think you'll faint. You don't have to watch it go in but it's over in a flash anyway. Thanks! Your right! Have to be brave now I'm a fur Mummy! Do you know about how much I will be looking at for micro-chipping? Might get it done with her next needle? Or is that not a good idea?
  6. Sadly PoppyDog, as she is an "oodle", I'd be prepared to put money on the fact that you have a puppy farm pup. How did you find her? You can only ask..but expect disappointment. Personally, I think you'd be better off not bothering. I found her via a google search...the "breeder" (or who I thought was the breeder at the time) sells these puppies along with a few other cross breeds which I also thought at the time were great Anyway you get the picture...I think your right about the not bothering part. Will just get it done myself...or at least get my fiance to take her as I don' think I can handle the HUGE needle part.
  7. What breed or crossbreed is your pup Poppy? If you bought from an intermediary, there's every chance you've got a puppy farm pup. It's not where you live that governs this but where the pup was bred and sold. I think you've got a snowballs chance in hell of getting any money out of the "breeder". She is a Cavalier cross a Cavalier X Poodle. I HATE the word 'puppy farm' and didn't think I was getting a puppy from there but after learning more and more I fear you may be right! As far as I can see the law governs the council she was born in, sold in and the one we live in (all within a 1 hour radius). Do you think its worth a shot?
  8. Glad Im not the only one who believed this! I must admit I THOUGHT I was buying from a breeder...it was a lady selling them for a breeder who lives out west. She had 2 puppies left and I didnt get to meet the Mum or Dad. Depends on which council area the pup was bred and sold in. This link will tell you which councils introduced the law last year and which ones will do it this year. Personally I recommend pups be obtained from a registered breeder. If you can't meet mum and dad, you have no idea what health or behavioural traits your pup had inherited. A young adult dog from a rescue that temperament tests is a more known quantity and few baby pups end up in rescue anyway. Thanks! I am in one of the councils that introduced it in 2009!!! Can I contact the "breeder" and ask her to pay for micro-chipping or am I dreaming???
  9. I always do! She tends to like to munch on these mushrooms that have shot up in the back corner of the yard and I'm not too keen on that either but if I follow too closely she wont do her business! Lol! Eeeeek! Did I mention I'm a BIG girl! Lol! The only option for me is the lead although as above not sure she would do her business on the lead! Guess I can only try!
  10. My 8 week old Puppy is still toilet training BUT when the sun goes down out come what look like cane toads! So now I am paranoid about taking her out there for her night time wees/poos! They can kill dogs can't they? And I just KNOW Poppy would LOVE to chew on something that hops! What to do???
  11. I'm fairly certain that a pup must be microchipped and atleast 8weeks of age before being sold or placed in most places of Australia. Really? They have to be microchipped before sale? I have to admit I was clueless about a lot of things when I bought by puppy 2 weeks ago... She isn't microchipped and I was told its best to wait until they are older as the needle is HUGE!? (Please don't tell me how stupid I am...I had A LOT of that from another forum I joined and it ruined my first 2 days with my pup! I was convinced I had bought a sickly pup who was going to die and that I was a bad person from everything that was hurled at me!) It's the law in quite a few states that a pup must be microchipped before sale. Which state are you in? There is no law that says a pup must be 8 weeks old before its sold. However all ANKC registered breeders are bound by their code of conduct not to sell pups before that age (allows first vacc to kick in and for ongoing socialisation with littermates). Its what the RSPCA recommend too. The only stupid mistakes are ones people repeat. No point in beating yourself up for getting a pup from a less than ideal source. Thousands of people do it every year. Just don't do it again and you'll get on fine here. Thanks for your kind words! If we add another puppy dog to our family it will be a rescue! I am in Qld... is that the law here?

  13. I'm no expert either! In fact I am probably the farthest thing from it! BUT...We got an 8 week old Cav girl last week and when I took her to the vet to be weighed (she was due to be wormed) she was 2.8kg. She is a big girl though. Bigger than her sister and brother!
  14. Is this an ok thing to do even when you have been advised there is Parvo going around your area? So far my Pup has met 3 different adults and been to the vet. Thats it! And I know I should be socialising her more but am really worried about it!
  15. I am concerned about this too! I read that your Puppy should be introduced to 100 different men, women and children before 12 weeks. But mine won't have had her needles by then! I have also been told that there is parvo going around our area so I really don't want to take her out and about and risk that!
