  1. The cat owners in my neighborhood are not at all responsible. There are cats roaming everywhere and a number of them are super aggressive. My pup has been attacked by cats so often he is now fear aggressive in relation to cats. My neighbor complains that he chases his cat, but I have explained the situation and he still takes no action to keep his cat out of our yard.
  2. Phenylalanine is an amino acid, a build block of protein. It is an essetial part of the diet for most people and dogs. The body has a mechanism for breaking down and eliminate any excess. There is, however, a rare genetic illness called PKU and the people who have it cant breakdown and eliminate phenylalanine, which makes them sick and can lead to death. This is why you have the warning labels on food. As far as I am aware thee is no corresponding ilness in dogs.
  3. The smelly breath and swelling suggest infection to me. She's a bit young for a tooth abcess unless she has managed to break one somehow. It is possible she has had some kind of mouth trauma, perhaps a puncture from a stick?
  4. Olle my Wheaten Terrier has always liked to snack on green stuff mostly grass or the curbside herb gardens in our last neighbourhood. Periodically he takes a fancy to a bush I dont recognise and I have to look it up to make sure it isn't harmful, but other than that I haven't paid it too much mind. Tonight, however, he just spent a good 15 to 20 minutes snacking on the bushes inthe backyard. We are talking gardenia bushes, lilypilli hedges and an unknown creeper. He isn't tearing the bushes up. He as just delicate plucking off individual leaves and eating them. At one point he even got up on his hind legs and stretched his neck out like a giraffe to reach some tasty ones higher up. I'm starting to wonder whether he might have some dietary deficiency. The bulk of his diet is Eukanuba topped with mince, sardines or scrambled egg, and he also gets a chicken wing in the morning.
  5. I bought washable pee pads from Conni when my pup was small because he had to be left inside. Best investment ever. I still put them down when he is going to be left at home all day, though I cannot remember the last time he used them. http://www.conni.com.au/shop/Conni+Critters+Pet+Pads/-2.html
  6. For bitches, the risk of mammary cancer increases with every season, but the additional risk from one season is statistically non-significant.
  7. Olle isn't fussy about food. He will eat anything and everything. *shudder*. But he is incredibly picky about his water. He prefers running water and refuses to drink from bowls if other dogs have drunk from them or they are more than 12 hours old. I change his water twice daily and no matter what he is doing or how tired he is he will always come and drink while the water is fresh. He will drink from muddy puddles though, so go figure.
  8. I feed my pig of a Wheaten his kibble in various treat dispensing toys: I think we have half a dozen different types. You do have to supervise to make sure they don't eat the toy particularly in the beginning but I just feed him in the kitchen as I am cooking for myself. As a bonus it also keeps him off the counters for the duration.
  9. This is a nice idea, but totally impractical the inner city where I live. We pass so many people on our walks that we would never get anywhere if we had to stop everytime. Not to mention the fact that there is no place that is off the pavement. Theoretically if your dog is heeling on your left hand side, you should be between your dog and any passersby anyway. As long as people are walking on the correct side of the pavement that is. ( But that's another grumble. )
  10. Perhaps, you might read instead of going off half-cocked. He was Refering to one of the cases in the article Tyra who was killed by four dogs in NSW in 2007.
  11. Goodness, yes. My parents had a houdini. He was a border collie x spaniel rescue and a lovely dog, but he had huge separation anxiety issues and would roam if he was left alone. He went over fences, so they got new ones. Higher ones with no cross pieces, so he couldn't climb them. He went under the fences so they buried chicken wire a meter under the ground around all the fences. He went through the wooden fences (totally shredding his feet in the process). The neighbours didn't want colourbond fences, so my parents extended the chicken wire half way up the fences. Then he started climbing and going over them again. He wound up tethered on a long line and one time he even went over the fence while attached to the tether. Fortunately, he slipped his collar or he would have strangled to death. On one memorable occaison he had been shut up in an enclosed first floor verandah for the night but, as it was hot, the windows had been left open for ventilation. He went straight through the flyscreens, out the window and over the fence. My sister found him on the front verandah in the morning absolutely saturated from playing in the creek and delighted with himself.
