  1. Thanks guys, I'm not sure what I will do about excercising my dogs, maybe give it a few days then go back. I've been going to that same park for 4 years and that is the first trouble I've had, I've gotta remember to be more careful on weekends tho as the weekend dog idiots come out and are usually not so reliable as the weekday regulars. Sorry to hear about the feral fence barking dogs Daisy, they sound scary too ;) Cuch, I hope Max's mouth feels better soon and he gets back to eating no advice here as I've never had to deal with dogs not eating before.
  2. Our first trial is next weekend, I really hope it isn't too hot It is the first time I've entered Benny into an agility trial, he is my oldest dog, but hasn't shown any interest in agility until recently, so I thought I would enter him in novice jumping and see what happens, it would be nice to get a few novice titles on him before hes too old, so fingers crossed he is keen to work I know my other 2 will be keen to get back into it too! hopefully not too feral!
  3. Hi dog walkers, We went to the park last night, even tho it was still hot here just a quick walk to the pond and back really. Unfortunately we had a big scare with some borderline agressive dogs off leash and out of control where they shouldn't have been and I'm not sure if I'm going to be brave enough to go back any time soon My dogs are ok, but they were all tied into the back of the car (station wagon) with the boot up while I walked 20m and put a set of keys I had found on a post so that the owner might find them, there were no people or dogs in sight and it was warm so that is why I left the car open. Across the other side of the carpark is another park, it is no dogs allowed, not even on leash! and bushes block all view into there. A bully breed dog came barreling out of there right when I was at the furthest point from my car no owners in sight, first it came to me, but was not friendly, then it saw my dogs in the back of the car and went rushing over to them. By the time I got there my dogs were looking quite uncomfortable about this dog there checking them out and I did not like his body language. I was considering what to do, as I didn't feel comfortable takeing hold of his collar (first time I've felt scared of a dog in many years) when a 2nd bully breed came rushing out, and towards my dogs, he looked totally agressive, so I quickly reached up and closed the boot of my car, catching dog noses (including my own) before he could get to my dogs too. once the car was closed these dogs were madly jumping up on my car trying to find a way in to get at my dogs and I was making my way to the drivers door when they decided they couldn't get at my dogs and started approaching me not looking friendly. I managed to get in my car just as I heard the owners calling these dogs (to no affect) and drove away quicly, I think I sped the whole way home. I can't stop imagining what might have happened if one of them had jumping into my car, or if I hadn't gotten the boot shut in time.
  4. This thread made for interesting reading My first vet Liked -Very knowlagable and took lots of time to explain everything - Handled my dogs well - Didn't seem to push unneccisary extra stuff - scales in waiting room that I could drop by and use Disliked - Receptionist/vet nurse always made me feel rude when I asked to see 1 particular vet rather than whoever was available - no after hours service - no off street parking My current vet Like - Seems very competant, he is an older vet and has a very sensible approach to treating my dogs - Happy to wait and see when appropriate instead of rushing in to treat - My dogs LOVE him and going to the vets. - Handles my dogs well - Let me hold Anna while she had blood taken, even tho she was obviously very bouncy - Has no brand dry food in the waiting room and fully supports my raw feeding - Small 1 vet practise, always have same vet and almost always the same vet nurse too - 2 consult rooms, always puts person arriving into the unused room so that the waiting room doesn't have any patients waiting when you go in - easy to talk to vet by phone if waiting for test results or need to follow up anything - scales in waiting room - gave me a student discount - off street parking Dislike - Keen to offer the yearly heartworm injection - no after hours service. I will be moving again sometime in the near future and will need to find another vet I like ;) hopefully there will be one close by. Edtited to add a few more I just remembered
  5. Hi Cosmolo, I assume that question is in response to my post. Lets see if I can find some words, to me there are a few reasons. I guess I am more than alittle biased towards working dogs and their creation based on working ability, form follows function etc. I'm no expert, but outside of the Toy group, almost every dog breed owes its existance to some form of work which shaped it into what it is today. To me it just feels wrong to take breeds with so much history, mix them together and come up with something else purely based on what someone desires to have as a pet. I also believe there are already many breeds suitable for all styles and tastes in pet dogs, unless someone found an area not already filled by a breed we already have, eg the Silken Windhounds I mentioned I feel did find a gap. Then maybe creating a new breed is appropiate if done responsibly. Otherwise, why create another breed that is potentially very similar to what we have, but without the long history? As for F1 crosses for the pet market, from what I've seen are quite unpredictable in looks, temperament, activity and care required, even if in theory they were bred responsibly from quality parents the risk of someone getting too much dog for them is too high and often ends badly for the poor dog. I've met very few x breeds that I felt were good dogs in their own right, and the few that I feel are seem to come from 2 breeds that are similar to each other in size, structure and temperament. I have a F1 cross here, my Raffy, and even tho he is from two relatively similar breeds (Belgian x BC) he has a whole host of issues that I feel make him less than a pure bred of either breed. I met a jack russell x pug once, it had the brain and drive of the JR in the body of a pug, the poor thing was so frustrated all the time that its legs couldn't do what its mind wanted that it turned into a very snarky little thing at a very young age, poor dog. I don't know, maybe I just like pure bred dogs too much to be open to the idea of mixing them all up. I can easily list a dozen or more pure breeds that I would love to own so don't understand how there could be anyone out there that cannot find at least one that they really love without having to resort to makeing another. I guess if people truly feel that there isn't a purebred out there that really suits them, then go for it, create one to fill that gap.
  6. I think there needs to be more purpose to the x breeding than selling pet puppies, no matter how responsibly x breds are bred and sold. Especially people just out to make F1 crosses purely for the pet market. As like others have said there are alot of pure breeds in Australia and there really is a pure bred dog somewhere that would fit really well with whoever has their eyes on an oodle for a pet if they only did a bit more research and learnt of some rarer breeds. Although I must admit, those people in the US who are breeding silken windhounds had a good point when they decided to make a smaller coated sighthound as there isn't one currently, they seem to be very responsible and if they were over here I would be very tempted Otherwise, if the breeder of x breds is producing a better working dog for whatever purpose than any purebred is for that job with a look to the future and either improving their dogs lines or makeing a whole new breed, as long as they are being responsible then I don't have a problem with that either.

  9. Hi again walkers Sorry to hear things are still not going your way Cuchulain and Daisy I hope happier days are ahead The dogs and I went for an hour trip to the park again this morning, lots of fetching and swimming and running, I really enjoy seeing them zooming around full speed, makes the park seem small! and it is a big park.
  10. Hi amypie, like others said if you get your title the secretary will often put you up. Also I'm not sure about other states but in NSW, as long as the entries have offically closed when you do get your title you can still run at the lower level in the trial if you like. I did this with Anna, she had 2 extra runs in novice jumping after her title, and now has 5 novice qually cards as I thought a few more runs in novice would be good for her confidence and I had already entered them. Good luck with your trials
  11. Hi Dog walkers! I've been a bit MIA for a few days, feeling extra sick so poor dogs haven't been walked until this morning, it was nice and cool and we spent an hour at the park. The dogs were glad for the run, and were totally feral hopefully I'm feeling good enough again to continue our daily walks now.

  13. If there was a breeder I really admired with dogs I absolutely loved in one breed I would be likely to go with them if I couldn't decide between a few breeds.
  14. No walkies again for us tonight, I think I gave myself food poisoning or something and have felt terrible all day glad to see so many others walking their dogs
  15. 3 active working breed dogs (see Sig) in a tiny suburban yard, dogs are mostly inside and the yard is really just a "dog toilet" :D they have a big run at the park most days and train for agility. They are happy, fit and healthy
  16. I admit I haven't read everyones replies, but wanted to put my 2 cents in here as well I feel a responsible owner has a responsibility to the dog(s) in their care and a responsibility to the greater community regarding their dogs behaviour. I feel an owners responsibility to their dog(s) can be summed up with this. To ensure the dog has a good life. to me this umbrella statement covers all these things as appropirate to the dog/breed in question: Feeding, Excercising, Vet care, Grooming, Living conditions, Social interaction, Training, Working (if applicable), Safety, Responsible breeding (or not breeding) of dogs in your care. etc I feel an owners responsibility to the greater community regarding their dogs can be summed up with this. To ensure the dog does not negatively impact on others or the environment. and this to me covers: Noise, Waste, Roaming, Chasing/Killing of livestock/ other pets/wild animals, Effective control in public, Obeying leash laws or no dog zones. etc I'm sure I've missed some things but to me that covers pretty much everything while allowing for all sorts of dogs, owners and situations.
  17. No walk for us tonight, we had thunderstorms happening here, and much needed rain!
  18. Its still hot here, ugh! I left it a bit late today and we didn't get to the park till 8.15pm, but I made myself walk all the way to the end and back anyway, didn't stop for any long ball games or swims. Anyway it was past dark by the time we got to the car at 9pm but worth it so my dogs could have 45 mins of running like loons I am pleased to say I think my dogs are getting back to their old fitness levels now, and I am feeling a tad fitter too! Still feeling ill but if I concentrate on how much I enjoy seeing my dogs run at the park I can enjoy our outings This thread has been a great kick in the behind for me Hi RF I am still here in Orange, no luck finding a rental house to move to yet, I'd be happy to walk or train! PM me once you are settled back from your holiday and we can organise something Glad your dogs are all safe and sound after your trip away!
  19. Well done to everyone who has been walking their dogs, even with the weather My dogs went to the park again, about 50 mins today and had another swim and a bit of a run, still hot here not sure what we would do without that dam
  20. Thanks for sharing, what a great doco! highly recommend anyone finding the time to watch this
  21. Uhoh we are at the bottom of page 2, who else walked today? Daisy and Megan well done I think a walking buddy is a great idea! It was still so hot tonight my dogs spent most of the time swimming again, very very glad for that dam, wish I could go in with them Day 6 - 50 mins park and swim
  22. I don't see Malamute either, GSDxLab sounds about right, he is lovely I met a MalamutexGSD once and it looked like a huge huge extremly boofy GSD with a Mal tail, Very full Mal type coat but with GSD black and tan markings and Mal type ears. He was a very handsome boy, but a real handful
  23. I frequent off leash parks with my dogs, The only time I've had trouble with dogs mobbing me for food is when I go to a park that has people that reguarly give treats to all dogs there I wont let my own dogs beg for treats and do my best to make sure noone gives them any and if needed will put anyone on a leash if they won't come away when called. The park I go to in Orange is huge and at the time I go sometimes I wont see another sole, other times maybe 1 or 2 dog walkers but they are often far away and generally people keep their dogs away from others. I occasionally bring treats to train something and have never had a problem here, agility equipment is another matter! never ever ever take agility stuff to an off leash park unless you want it peed on as every joe and his dog has to come and have a look without keeping their dog away A few years back when I lived in Sydney I would go daily to the local park, it was only small and fenced, and there was 20+ dogs there most afternoons all mingled in together, while there was regular idiots and poorly trained and antisocial dogs on occasion, most were ok and I used the opportunity to teach my dogs not to hump or resource guard with toys or food, or not to harrass other people or dogs and trained a reasonable recall under distraction. All in all I think it turned my dogs into pretty well behaved dog park dogs and I have found that since moving to Orange my dogs social skills have deteriorated quite a lot When I spend a weekend in Sydney and have free time I will often seek out a busy dog park, including the earlier mentioned Leichart one with Cafe Bones so my dogs can meet 100's of dogs and relearn their manners and regain their aloofness and disinterest in other dogs (the more dogs they meet the less interesting new dogs seem to be for them.)
  24. We did our hour at the park again, still hot so the dogs spent alot of the time swimming, very glad for the dam at our dog park! Day 5 - 1 hour park and swim
  25. Hi Amerykaus, there is a small club at Bathurst now which trains at the St Pats club grounds on friday evenings run by John and Alison Abbot. Pretty sure they have taken a break for summer holidays now tho. I have been a few times but not for awhile as I can't make the fridays very often because I am in Sydney trialling lots. Because there is only the one trial a year at Bathurst and the next closest is in Springwood, most of the people training are just there for a bit of fun and catered mostly to beginners, but there are a few triallers among us If your friend likes long drives the club at Springwood is good and caters more for people serious about trialling their dogs, that is held on Monday evenings.
