Just to update - my DH and 2.5 year-old will be coming with me. We will make sure to bring plenty of food. My DH decided that they would both really enjoy seeing our pup playing with others.

I'm going to throw out a recommendation for Happy Paws treats. I'm using the "Perfect Puppy" treats at the moment to train my pup. They are small enough that I can put a handful in my pocket and do a 10-minute training session. And pup just takes a couple of seconds to crunch them. The puppy mix is tiny bits of: Beef liver, Calf liver, Chicken liver, Lambs fry, Lamb heart, Ox heart, Ox kidney, Ox liver, Ox tongue, Pork heart, Pork kidney, Pork liver, & Sausage I don't actually know how the treats are processed but I they look dry-roasted.

That looks great - well done!

Please add me: Mushka : Juno (std poodle puppy) Food: pita bread & hummus & olive paste.

wow. You were willing to care for dogs in-home with walks and baths for $6/day? And you even did pick-up? I think many dog owners would be willing to pay $35+/day for this level of care and would be disgusted to learn that there was a such an atrocious split of payment to the actual carers. That is a hefty profit the company made from you.

We will come and be newbies too: Mushka & Juno - Std. poodle puppy. Leo's sister. I'll be back later to update this with what I will bring.

Thank you for the responses - I am in Mordialloc and am quite open to recommendations of puppy schools closer to me that have a similar style to Kintala. Cheers!
-
Has anyone been through puppy training at both Kintala and another puppy school - would you be able to tell me how different they were? I am trying to decide if Kintala is worth traveling 50 minutes to go to.

Thanks for this - I just followed the link from the recent car safety discussion. I watched the video and the Roadie elite looked simple and easy to use - is there anywhere in Melbourne to see one in person?
-
What do you recommend for a car restraint? Does a crate or a seatbelt harness offer better protection for the dog? A harness looks more comfortable and easier fit into a car.

I'm interested. I'm a postdoc biology researcher and my research is nothing to do with dogs but I might be able to offer an "insiders" perspective of science research.

All these photos are gorgeous. I especially love: It looks like he is praying "Oh for the love of God let this photoshoot end!"

What about good meaty bones and offal? Is there any demand out there for these to be sold in a pet shop?
-
Could it be whooping cough? There's apparently a lot of it around at the moment http://www.warwickdailynews.com.au/story/2...-shakes-region/ I hope its not a dog-allergy!

poor dog.

What do you think of one of those breed-selector type quizzes hosted on DOL but with links to newbie-forums for each breed with breed-enthusiasts be willing to moderate newbie forums and answer questions, direct newbies to upcoming shows/trials etc...
-
I really like this idea. I would love it if breeders and their dogs were more accessible outside of the show/trial arena.

I read a few books a while ago. I liked: Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats Richard H. Pitcairn D.V.M. & Susan Hubble Pitcairn And I remember "Work Wonders: Feed Your Dog Raw Meaty Bones" by Tom Lonsdale was a lot more readable than his other book "Raw meaty bones promote health" (which I found fantastically boring) but I'm not if you've already tried these. Work wonders is available as a free pdf if you google it.

I feel ashamed to say, I never even thought of this. :p I'd never thought about this either. It makes me look at vegetarianism with a new perspective.

I'd consider myself a member of the ignorant masses - I know very little about dog breeding or showing, and family pets growing up were always mutts from the SPCA. I'm hoping to get a purebreed dog in the near future because I'm looking for particular traits and I'd like the predictability of dog being bred to fit the breed description. I think maybe my positive attitude to purebreds was shaped from living overseas in an area where there were a large number of purebred dogs and most of my dog-owning friends had purebreds. I'm curious, what are the Australian statistics like - are ANKC-registered dogs the minority? Do you think that there so many designer dogs, mutts and puppy-farmed purebreds that the general public have little experience of what a well-bred purebred dog is like? And having just read through the very interesting debate in the "Puppy farm awareness rally" thread I am wondering what is being done and what more can be done to promote the rights of ethical dog breeders?

Which parts are supposed to be 'junk' ? I'd say all the cereals, grains and vege protein are junk. And unspecified "animal protein" could be anything from hooves and hair to prime steak but I'm guessing it isn't steak.

I would love it if an Australian company made something like this American high-end dehydrated human-grade food: http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/ But I'd be happy if you could make it without sourcing organic products and kept the price reasonable.

ew. That's gross. But actually one of the reasons I want a family dog is so my daughter grows up accepting that a bit of germy dirtiness is sometimes just part of the fun.
