That would even more funny if it wasn't a little frightening. A dog trainer thinks that?? A healthy dog's trainability shouldn't be affected by its diet. I have heard about links between hyperactivity and processed food additives though. Pele was fed semi raw by her breeder and total raw from the day she came home at 8 weeks. By 9 weeks old she could sit, stand and drop, 10 weeks she could roll-over and high-5. Pele won "best tricks" at an Am. Staff club's Fun Day (the Bull Terrier Club and Staffy club got an invite too) at 15 weeks old. Pele passed every obedience class every month and graduated class 5 and received her "Basic Obedience" certificate at 12 months months old. All on a raw diet Pele has earned her Companion Dog Obedience title and we are starting to work towards CDX on a raw diet. Imagine how much smarter she could be if she was fed a commercial diet????

not toxic, but can be an allergen for some dogs. The only soy that is good is the fermented soy such as in tofu. Soy is linked to infertility, breast cancer, hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer, and many other disorders. I used to drink soy milk believing in the health benefits, but not any more I discovered all this when I was researching cancer diets for my partner.

Same here. I wouldn't touch soy with a barge pole after what I've read about it recently. Same with Canola. If I give the sardine in spring water I add some fish oil to it. Prick a couple of capsules of fish oil or I buy nthe bottles of fish oil. If the can of mackeral is too big for one meal then freeze half for later

Now if we bring a rope we can tie the top part of the fence to the tree getting rid of the gap Worked well tho'

I didn't take any pics. I had the camera out and was trying for a close up of Wesley, the Pug when it started to rain. I didn't pull it out again after that

Absolutely agree I took Pele down to the beach the day after she came home at 8 weeks. I carried her down to the wet sand so that she didn't have to go thru dirty areas. I wanted her to socialise with other dogs and as she would be walking with our beach mates on a regular basis, I wanted her to meet them. At the same time we worked on "Watch" and "Recall" with distractions. Pele, now 4.5 years is fantastic at both and is sociable with everyone and everything. She also now has her Companion Dog (CD) obedience title and is working towards CDX. More dogs die before they are 18 months old due to behaviour problems than they do to Parvo, so I was prepared to take the risk. Also this is too good to miss!! Shirley Chong has some excellent clicker training articles on her "keepers" page and now you can download 2 of her clicker training books for free!!! Two of Shirley Chong's books Just Plain Clicker Sense and The Clicker Cookbook set in PDF format to view online or download for free http://www.shirleychong.com/myBooks.html

Good luck for tomorrow We are going to the DOL BBQ. Pele got her CD title a few weeks ago so won't be there. I am working at SAODC so might see you there Will probably be taking registrations, so say hello.

Maybe a web type martingale collar, as they don't need to be as tight on the neck as a normal collar. Callicoma Kelpies & Pet Supplies have them. Pele wears a similar one that I buy thru my obedience club. She does have a Rogz collar, but I keep it for "Sunday Best" as the chain bit rusts thru swimming at the beach

Best Brush/comb For Getting Rid Of Excess Hair
Bully replied to FranVT's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've got both, but prefer the zoom groom ;) -
Absolutely. Bullies aren't stupid and once they work out how to make the clicker go off (click = treat) it becomes a game to them. That's how I've got Pele to a CD title. Pele won "Best Tricks" at the Amstaff club's Fun Day (BT's and Staffies were invited) at 15 weeks old I just wish that I knew about clicker training when Jessie was a puppy. Jessie (at the "Bridge") was a "cross-over" dog and soon caught on to the clicker. Just a wild guess, but she must have been about 6 or seven years old. It's never too late. Come and join positivelybts email group. Most of us are clicker trainers Lots of great clicker training articles here Clicker solutions - clicker training articles

I love the Gwen Bailey book "The Perfect Puppy" and recommend it to anyone with a new puppy. Anything by Dr Ian Dunbar. Those 2 free downloads are great Shirley Chong has some excellent clicker training articles on her "keepers" page and now you can download 2 of her clicker training books "Just Plain Clicker Sense" and "The Clicker Cookbook" for free http://www.shirleychong.com/myBooks.html ;)

CONGRATULATIONS to you both :D Keep up the good work Bull Terriers can do obedience ;) If Pele can do it, then so can Atlas ;) As mentioned earlier get a copy of "When Pigs Fly - Training Success With Impossible Dogs" by Jane Killion. It's a brilliant book Another good book for training Bull Terriers is "So Your Dog's Not Lassie"

I have never had a problem having an obedience dog in the show ring doing a sit. When they were puppies it was a different matter but show puppies sit too. They should know the command stand with or without a hand signal so it's not a problem. And all the terrier people used to look on with their mouths agape when I'd swing Pele around on the end of a tug rope to get her excited before going into the ring, then command her to "Give" and then focus her back on me Just rules from day one
-
I did obedience as well as showed Pele from when she was a puppy. Most breeders that I spoke to said not to teach her to sit. Why? I thought, dogs aren't stupid and know the difference between show and obedience. Pele AKA "Aust. Ch. Trahern Glenariff (ai) CD" has both show and obedience titles. Pele is rock solid on her stand for exam Jessie, my previous Bull Terrier (no papers) would go into a wriggling, happy mess at stand for exam if the instructor had ever petted her in the past. We got to Novice trial level, but never competed. With Pele I think that both complemented each other as in the show ring Pele would stand at the end of the lead and focus on me (well, the bait) and run around the ring nicely in heel position without pulling and stand for exam is a piece of cake Go for it, and let the world know that your dog has beauty as well as brains

I'm thinking of doing tracking with Pele next year now that she's got her CD title. A friend in the USA who has just got a TD title on her 18 month old Bull Terrier has recommended "Enthusiastic Tracking" by William (Sil) Sanders. It arrived the other day from Dogwise. I haven't had time to look at it yet I've added the Johnson book to my "Wishlist" on Fishpond

Pele is hypothyroid. I suspected that something was "not quite right" when she didn't snap out of her porkiness and lethargy after being in season just before she turned 2. I took her to the vet and insisted on a full blood test including thyroid and the results came back low thyroid. The vet was amazed! My previous Bull Terrier was diagnosed as hypothyroid when she was 5 years old, and the vets didn't pick it up then It was only thru my research on the internet. Hypothyroidism is very common in dogs and there are many symptoms. I'm amazed that many vets don't think to test for it. Boris should start to feel his old happy self in a couple of weeks. He'll probably need a few blood tests to "tweak" the medication, then after that blood tests twice a year to keep a check on things

I'm using Glyde for Pele. It was a toss up between that and Joint Guard. Might try Joint Guard next I've found that Value Vet appears to be the cheapest place Glyde is $74.28 (360gm) and Joint Guard (400gm) is $62.20 + postage.

I swapped Pele over to Valuheart, as they are the same ingredients but much cheaper They aren't a chewable tho', but that doesn't matter to "Miss Piggy". There is another generic heartworm monthly that is water soluble with the same ingredients as Heartguard called Nuheart, both Valuheart and Nuheart are available from Vet-N-Pet Direct
-
Pele will pick it up off the ground, but is incapable of sitting and holding it, but she can crap with a tennis ball in her mouth Must put more effort into the dumb-bell now that she's got her CD.

Pele got her CD title today at the GSD Club trial. I'm so proud of her Congratulations to everyone else who passed

New Website For Dog Training & Behaviour Books
Bully replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks 4 paws. I need more dog books like a hole in the head I've just bought some books at Dogwise, luckily 2 of them aren't available at Wag School books, so I feel a bit better -
Get hold of the book "Mine! A Guide to Resource Guarding in Dogs" by Jean Donaldson A practical how-to guide on resource guarding/aggression - food bowl, object, bed, crate, owner, etc. - in dogs. From the popular author of Culture Clash, Dogs Are From Neptune. It's available here http://www.wagschoolbooks.com.au/shop/wsbjdb2.html and is an excellent book.
