So, dogs that get desexed at the Uni through the pound system shouldnt be, as it is a surgical procedure and of lower standard? Dogs that get desexed via the pound system don't have owners who'll sue. That is what a waver is for No vet can guarantee you dog will live once put under anaesthetic and we all sign paperwork before surgical procedures I just think there could be alternatives and thinking outside the square is a good thing Where possible trying to preserve life should be the main objective I just believe that if the students are to operate on live animals, then use animals that need procedures whose owners (or non profit resuce for that matter) who don't have the finances to have it done and then the students get to see the recovery instead of just its death

Some are now. But I dont' think the concept should be extended to surgery. Imagine the stress on the students and the impact on the families if a procedure didnt' go to plan. I'd like to see surgical work on pets limited to people who know what they're doing. It's not like a haircut. I dont see it as such a complexed thing and some pounds already use universities for desexing If my dog had say Cancer in his spleen and I didnt have the finances to try and have it surgically removed and the only options i had were to PTS or take him home and watch him waste away until he was PTS. I would take the option of surgery with the Uni. It it meant there was a chance it could be removed and he would be cancer free. That is all I am saying. If I am reading right. There are qualified vets etc with them and they arent left to their own devices I would rather see the students operate on an animal that has an ailment then who is healthy

Was just thinking about all of this overnight. Operating on animals that dont have any medical issues then they get PTS- correct? Wouldnt it be good if the services of vet students were offered to low income families or pensioners who can't afford alot of veterinary care? Some procedures are really costly but if the University offered a free or low price option then the that could be a huge help to the community and then students would also be able to aide the animal in its recovery.

I hope reading the views expressed by vet students here causes those who hold this view to reflect on it a little. I dont need to reflect on how I feel about it Just because I dont agree with something doesnt mean I dont understand it And I read what was written

I personally couldnt operate on a live animal and then put it down. Especially it it were pregnant or a puppy I understand in order for the students to learn their craft that they need be able to have animals, but with so many dogs being PTS daily surely there is enough of them that they can use decesased bodies. I guess I just have my doubts that the pound really cares or not about if the dogs get rehomed or go to rescue or if they are just happy to palm them off to the university

Sorry, I kind of agree that if he just desexed her then she wouldnt have got pyometra and that is life threatening or a big bill

Maybe I have no dog park etiquette I agree stop jumping dogs, but it is a public park and the dogs go there to interact and play with other dogs If u choose to get a toy out then I would think you would realise that other dogs might want to join in and play with that toy also. If u dont want them to share a toy, then dont get it out If I sit on the ground at the park and my dog and another dog he is wrestling with end up on my lap, then I send them both away, but It doesnt bother me in the slightest. If mine gets over zealous I will go and get him and try and give him a few mins to calm down, but generally I just let him enjoy his time with the other dogs. I take water to share with the other dogs and I pick up his pooh As for the ppl who get there early, maybe their dog doesnt get on with other dogs, so that is the best time to run them. Maybe they are a shift worker and that is the time they are awake. I agree it would be annoying, but again it is a public park and not really sure anything can be done about noise.

Not sure what is worse. Sending the dogs to the slaughter for meat (not sure how they are killed in china for meat) or skinning them alive for fur, but I think skinning alive is pretty horrific or when they tie them down with wire and stab them in the groin with a knife to bleen out as to not ruin the fur I think I will go and throw up now

She has depresssion and if anyone has suffered with depression it isnt nice. This little guy probably gave her something to live for Regardless if right or wrong, I dont think she has meant anyone any harm and she probably loves him I know if I saw something injured or hurt my first thought would be to save it I think that is a natural thought process. You can't change what is. Steve Irwin the Roo is alive, so now it should be how to best care for him. Especially if he isnt in pain
-
I have no issue with the Roo being saved at all I have more of an issue with it being a Red Kangaroo If so then he is going to be bloody huge and they can be aggressive. Not saying this little guy will be, but maybe he needs to be moved to some kind of animal Sanctuary where he will be with other Kangaroo's or humans who know how to look after him medically and dietry

Umm...why does it seem likely? Aren't they safe with a Victorian rescue? They are safe in Victoria together, but only one was originally saved from the pound. The Staffy was left behind but then spring by the Victorian rescue group. Maybe that quote has something to do with when they were originally in the pound?

It is a week today that we said goodbye to you beautiful boy Daddy and I can at least smile now and talk about you without falling into a heap, but we are still lost without your presence. We miss your impromtu singing and acting like a wuss at the smallest thing. Love you Silly Billy

Yeah it is the only names they have known Dear old pair I was thinking the same thing. If they've had these names for a decade, why change the names and confuse them further? Do people normally change the name of rescue dogs? Not an older dog. Only puppies, but they usually come without a name. That is just me though I am still more concerned about why a Rescue group would only take one of these oldies and not the other and choose to seperate a surrendered pair of dogs that have been together for so long. I find that just as sad as an owner surrendering them
