From What Day Do You Start Blood Tests?
oakeydoak1 replied to oakeydoak1's topic in Breeders Community
Hi Bob I am basically blood testing so I am sure she is on as last time we both AI'd her and natural mated and nothing so this time we want to make sure that she is ovulating. Also the drive is 3 hours one way, my girl gets car sick and I will have to stay down there with her. With 2 kids and a farm to run plus working I kinda need to know we are giving it the best possible chance. -

Thanks all. Will see what the vet says tomorrow. Am a bit excited. -
Hi All My bitch is in season and as we are going to be travelling to a stud dog I am going to get her tested to make sure she is right to go. I am going to ring our vet on Monday but I was just wondering from what day you start taking the blood tests. Never had to do it before. Thanks!

Cosmolo - She made a liar out of me this morning and ate her breakfast out of her Kong! Physically separated I would say maybe 2 hours, it depends on what I am doing during hte day, the weather, what we are doing on the farm etc. I am going to put her in with my older girl and change her yard completely and see if that works.

SAS - Not that I know of. Have emailed her breeders and am waiting a reply. Thanks for the link. Will give it a go.

Hi Cosmolo I have tried giving her her meals in a treat ball and Kong. She will not touch them at all. No interest what so ever. I have even tried putting her favourite (chicken) inside a Kong. No go. Usually when I feed her I go in there and make her do a sit/drop and wait utnil I give her, her dinner. I do put her in there with other dogs, she doesnt really show any interest in them when they are in there with her. She eats all her meals in there. I dont really spend a huge amount of time in there with her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. She loves being with me and when she is around the house she is always with me. She would happily sleep/eat at the back door but this isnt secure for her.

Have posted this in the Border Collie and breeders thread but thought I would post here too.............. Hi all, wondering if any of you can help me with a problem I have with my BC female. She is 5 months old. I am a long time bc owner and now breeder but have never had this problem before and dont quite know how to deal with it. Was hoping you guys may have some suggestions. The problem I have is that for hte last month or so when she is in her yard she is continuously running around her yard in a figure 8. It is almost like it is an obssesion. If you yell at her she will stop for a couple of moments but then continue again. As soon as she goes in there she starts. At first I thought it might be a "scared" reaction. She is a very timid dog and I thought her "fear period" might just be extra long/bad but then when I went to put her away last night she raced to her yard and jumped up at her gate. I wouldnt think she would do this if she was scared. She isnt stuck in her yard all the time. She is probably out at least 4-6 hours a day if not more apart from the two days I work. Her yard is very large (about half the size of an average sized house). When she is out she plays with the other 4 borders, has some training and goes for walks/runs around the property or goes to work with my husband (farm work). I have tried giving her "toys" to keep her occupied when I am at work and she is in her yard but as she is not food orientated things like Kongs and Treat Balls she doesnt care about. Any suggestions on what may cause this behaviour/how I can stop it? Should I change the yard she is in or make her a house dog, obviously making her a house dog has its own problems, the way our house is set out she would have to go into a yard whilst I am at work anyway? Any advice would be appreciated.

I am sorry to say Ladyrita that I dont think this is the first time the breeder has been like this. Sorry you had this bad experience and hope that your next one is happier. Just thank your stars that you didnt get the pup home and it got really sick and you were stuck with a huge vet bill and maybe no pup.

Up my order from 2 to 5 and that will get you there.

Well done Katy - I can definately tell the difference with my mob too. -
Oh smooch - they are in just terrible condition!!!!! ;) Bloody neighbours - like to see what his animals look like. It does make you scared for your animals safety though

Gee you guys get it cheap! Our Leonards is $2.50/kg for hte mince and the frames are 10kgs for $20 - but I still think this is reasonable.

Pup Will Not Walk On Lead
oakeydoak1 replied to oakeydoak1's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks JulesP and Cosmolo. Think you have me on the right track. Will start with the leading to dinner thing and then not give to the pressure. Like all borders she is very smart and learnt the sit stay drop first go so hopefully she wont take too long to learn this! Will let you know how I go. -

Pup Will Not Walk On Lead
oakeydoak1 replied to oakeydoak1's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Cosmolo - that is a good idea, will give that a try. I suppose the pressure thing is like when you a training a horse - that is how we get them to lead - suppose I didnt think of it like that, I was more thinking "she is so little and I dont want to scare her". -
Pup Will Not Walk On Lead
oakeydoak1 replied to oakeydoak1's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
JulesP - I release the pressure. Wait until she calms down. Try again - she has a hissy fit. Wait until she calms down. Get her to do a sit or drop so she is doing something that she is told and then let her off - really not sure what else to do. Vickie- Yep tried that and it makes no difference. -
I know I have made a rod for my own back but.............. I have a 5 month old BC who I am just starting to leash train. First my reason for waiting so late is: We live on a 4000acre property and alot of our dogs work, we found that if we lead train them too early they dont like leaving us to "Cast off" they think they are supposed to be by our side all the time. The ones we have left later to lead train have been our best working dogs. So Lucy is now 5 months and I definately dont think she is going to make it as a working dog, which is fine, I want to put her in obedience or agility. Off lead she sits, stays, drops (sometimes), comes etc but as soon as the lead goes on she has an absolute hissy fit. She either: 1) drops to the ground and rolls over or 2)jumps and pulls on the lead even without me putting pressure on it. I have put the lead on her to drag around which she does fine, doesnt bother her, try picking the lead up - the above happens. I have tried having another dog on a lead next to her - no go she just freezes. I have also tried using food to encourage her to come to me and walk with me but she is not a food driven dog at all - even tried it before she had her meal as I thought she might then be extra hungry and the food would smell good. I am going to take her to obedience next month to get some help bu I was wondering if anyone has any ideas in the meantime? Many thanks

BF - I had to go through 5 different creams until I found the one that cleared it up. Very annoying. In the end it was a cortisone cream that worked but I cant remember which one, it was pretty strong though. They are pretty gorgeous puppies and very well behaved.(The kid too!) Glad to hear that Zoe is settling for you. -

And just thought I would show you my two. Banjo is 4 months, Lucy is 5 months. Not a big fan of having two puppies together but I lost my stud dog and Banjo came up and I fell in love.
