There are times when animals show more empathy than humans

Each individual is different and I am one of those people that can't be without a canine companion. When that awful time comes and our family has to say goodbye my need for another takes over and I will try to find that special friend as soon as I can. I am not replacing my lost friend but adding another to a new chapter in my life. I Over the past years, our family has had two companions of staggered ages so when one leaves, there is always another to come home to. It doesn't make the hurt any easier. I have often had comments as to how could I get another dog so soon after losing one but that's the way I am, and am not sorry I have done so.

I have been with each and every one of them. I feel I owe it to them. They gave me their all and that's the least I can do. My OH on the other hand can't bear to be in the room when it's time to let go. It doesn't mean he loves them any less than me, but that's just the way he is. Each one is back home, in a beautiful container. I dread the time when we have to let go, but in the long run, it's for our beloved friends to rest in peace and at times, pain free.

Ivermectin is a miracle product. I use it on my budgies to treat lice, mites, scale face, worms and worms.

I would be cutting back on the portions dividing them into the two meals per day. Like others have said, his body condition will tell you if he's getting enough.

Funny that. There is a Cocker Spaniel that does that with a tennis ball. She doesn't want her owner to throw the ball but urges anyone standing near her to do so. It's so funny really. I'm always afraid I'll kick her in the head.

No, this is people who not knowing why your dog is on a leash,in an off leash area, immediantly start to complain. Apparently your dog should never be on lead in an off lead area! That just strikes me as guilty conscience then! "I can't deal with my dog on lead so how dare you have yours here on lead!" Another peeve of mine is dogs in parks without collars and/or people without leads for them. Quinn's ACD "frenemy" (being polite) who I mentioned earlier is apparently worse on lead than off when it comes to her aggression - when we were moving them apart today one of their family suggested putting her on lead and the others said "no she's worse then". I\Our family has owned a standard Schnauzer in the past and at the park, he would always lunge at joggers whilst he was on leash. Once he was reliably trained at recall, he was allowed off lead. Never again did he lunge at joggers. He never batted an eyelid. My feelings are that if a dog is on lead, he/she feels vulnerable and the 'aggressiveness' is a defence mechanism as there is no escape whilst on lead.

You would be very wise to go to the Schnauzer Club Show coming up and speak to some of the breeders. There are also mini Schnauzer breeders listed with DOL. It seems that now that MOST puppies are $2000 up for limited register. Good luck in your quest. Be warned that Schnauzer breeders in general are choosy about who buys their puppies and personally, I think that's a good thing. Rarely do find schnauzers needing rehoming.

They still need the mental stimulation that comes with going for a walk. It's not just about physically walking around. Yes. Kept within four walls day in and day out would make me go stir crazy. It's nice to get out and see the world.

Poor puppy. I feel that if your puppy was playing and acting normal, everything will be OK. Teenagers can be a pain. Some of them act before they get their brains in gear and most likely didn't want to cause the puppy any harm or distress. As for your intention to install a privacy screen, body corporate rules will dictate if this in fact is allowed, whether you are renting or are the owner of the apartment. Best check with them first.

That sounds so easy! How long and at what power level? I have a microwave but have never cooked vegetables in it Depends on the size of the pumpkin bought. I make sure it is fairly soft as I sometimes put supplements dug into the flesh.

I feed my boys as a matter of course a piece of pumpkin with their meal. I put the whole piece that I buy in the microwave and cut it into portions and store in the fridge ready for feeding. They love it.

This is something that popped into my head regarding barking dogs. Not my dogs, but how does a neighbour prove to the council that there is a nuisance dog in the vicinity. I won't say my dogs don't bark in our yard but it is not a continuous problem. They may bark for a very short time and then just come in via the doggy door. I won't allow them to continue if I think they've been at it for too long. I understand from reading on DOL that the complainant is required to document times and duration and possibly tape the racket. But, what if the complainant puts forward false evidence? Does council check with other neighbours or just take the word of the complainant? Just wondering.

Yep, I agree with this. Best to always check first. Yes, so ask the agent and he/she will no doubt put it to the landlord for a final decision.

You're right. Some people just can't express themselves and I can see why the breeders are put off, but a courtesy response could well steer them in the right direction. Sometimes these sort of buyers can be impatient, but that is where the breeder should show patience with guidance. It works both ways. I must admit I have waited for over 12 months for a pup at times but that was my choice and said pup was for us to have as a family pet, not for showing or breeding.

Yesterday, I met an absolutely gorgeous baby puppy. The owner called it a Husky malamute. I thought she meant it was a cross breed, but no, she was adamant it was pure. She said that Huskies are called Siberian Huskies and Malamutes are called Husky Malamutes. The thing that I was taken aback with was that the fact that this puppy was picked up from the farm breeder on the Sunday, and this was Tuesday and the pup was pout and about at the park. The pup is 8 weeks old. I didn't comment but she was chastised by other dog owners about the pup not being vaccinated. Her response was that it's OK because the pup was brought up on a farm with many other animals so there wasn't a problem. Another thing she spouted was that Malamutes were NOT to be fed raw because it made them aggressive. My mini Schnauzers are fed raw and don't have an aggressive bone in their body. As it was, the pup was growling at and snapping other dogs in the group, and I'm not convinced that this was play. As an example, I always carry liver treats for my boys as a reward for coming when called. This pup was wanting some and whenever any of the group of dogs approached me, the pup then growled and snapped. The owner, unfortunately, wouldn't take any advice from owners in the group and obviously knew better. At 8 weeks, that pup was almost the size of my minis and has a whole lot of growing to do. Hope she knows what she's doing.

Sure, what a wonderful dog BUT the parents were not as close as the baby was to the dog. Only a split second needed for the dog to react and that baby's face could have been torn. There is a tolerance point and I sure wouldn't want to find it in such a situation. Personally, I think the parents are not acting responsible to either the baby or to the dog. I can see in the future, that this baby will try to get away with pestering this dog and be expected to give in.

Asking questions to determine if I'm a suitable person for her pups is her right and I respect that, asking for photos of myself and the inside of my home is an invasion of privacy. How about if I was to return the favour and start asking breeders to send me photos of their kennels and/or the pups living quarters and given that most of them tell me their dogs are not kennelled, perhaps I should ask for photos of the inside of their house, what do you reckon? I'd love to be a fly on the wall to see the look on their face if I was blatant enough to ask for such photos, lol. As for being concerned with the colour, type and symmetry of markings.….yes, I am and am not ashamed to say so…or is that only a breeder's prerogative? Fair's fair, give me a break, sheeeeesh. You have every right to ask to see photographs of where the dogs are housed.

I have to agree with your comment. I am not a breeder just a dog lover and there seems to be too much emphasis on what the pup looks like. It would seem to me anyway, that the OP comes across to the breeders as undecided and much too obsessed with looks. I know that there are breeders out there who do feel they are holier than thou, but they are the ones that I would steer clear of. I want an ongoing relationship with the breeder in regards to my pup, so yes, it works both ways. I like you apologize if I am wrong but.....

Breeders - sell it amongst themselves? What do you mean by that? And maybe you could get yourself included in their "in crowd" by actually having some face to face meetings and being MORE PATIENT. And how would you feel if you were told that you were "second choice" or 10th choice and therefore miss out on a puppy... I understand you can love all three breeds - but it also (from out here reading your posts) makes you seem a bit indecisive. And breeders get burnt by indecisive buyers every day - because they "maybe I'd like that puppy, I'll have to think about it" - indecisive and then they change their minds. Some of these tyre kickers never even let the breeder know they've changed their mind about where they're getting their puppy. Can you see how what you've written in here - can make you look like one of those people? I am by far an "indecisive" buyer, as I said dozens of times already; all 3 breeds would suit me to a T but I am not prepared to just purchase any Chihuahua or just any Sheltie, I am after a particular look and if I were to obtain that look, I would be more than happy. I like to spend time, on the phone, with a breeder and detail exactly what it is I am looking for. For example, I do not want a Chihuahua with an overshot or undershot bite, I don't want the "Deer" type Chihuahua, I want an apple head with a shortish nose as opposed to a long, pointy snout. In regards to the Sheltie, I would like one with a full collar and even facial markings as I prefer symmetrical markings. I would like a friendly, approachable Sheltie as opposed to being timid and/or nervous. I have spoken to several Chihuahua breeders and without fail they ALWAYS keep those pups for themselves or sell to another breeder they know…and I'm not making invalid assumptions, I am being told as much. The same can be said of Sheltie breeders. Another issue is that I do NOT want a young pup that has already been desexed. My vet highly discourages it. Basically, I've kept an open mind in that if my pup of choice was to present itself, be it a Chihuahua or a Sheltie I would purchase it. I don't see a problem with that. I would love each of these breeds equally. The is my first interaction in this post, but the problem I see is that you going on looks of the proposed pup and I feel this is misguided. Temperament and health issues are the most important. I have bought puppies from breeders over the years and if the litter has more than one colour I am asked my preference. My answer was that I prefer such and such, but if this was unavailable or unsuitable for our family, I would be happy with any colour. Most times the breeder has matched up our puppy for us and we couldn't have been more pleased as all have had absolutely wonderful temperaments considering I have grandchildren, which is of the utmost importance.

Happy birthday Miah. Doesn't time fly. Jasper my 'big' boy turned 7 last September and my 'little one' will be three next March. Where does the time go!!!!! they say time flies when you're having a good time.

Reread the post. OP said 24 Hadn't lapsed but decided the puppy was wanted.
