  1. It ran onto the road because it was being attacked by the other dogs. So they are directly responsible for the dogs death. The only thing sensational about the title is the reference to pit bulls. The headline actually says "Guide dog killed after being ambushed by pit bulls in Bellfield in Melbourne's northeast" This is true, but what if it was something else that had startled the dog? It wouldn't even have made the news then. Say it was a windy day and there was a tarp that suddenly moved, the dog startled and jumped into the road. My dogs have almost done this on several occasions. What if it had been a golden that suddenly jumped out from behind a corner and startled the dog? Other than the pit bull type dogs involved, it's not even worth reporting. True, but the guide dog was not startled by anything else but 4 dogs, pit bulls or other breed, it doesn't matter what. The fact is that these dogs attacked and mauled a cocker spaniel and then chased the guide dog onto the road. What would have happened if the blind owner was with the guide dog, and not his brother at the time? Why are you making excuses for these brutes whatever their breed happens to be? maybe it was their dogs that did the "startle" ? Sorry, I don't understand your logic.

  3. Listening to 3AW on this subject, a male caller stated that his family had a Pit Bull who was a loved family pet and for no good reason turned on the female owner. Consequently, the dog was put down. The fellow sounded a mature reasonable type and said that in his opinion, Pit Bulls are not to be trusted. This whole situation is such a tragedy. I am praying that these dogs are rounded up by the authorities and put to sleep and the owners dealt with severely. What the heck were 4 dogs walking in the public domain unrestrained?
  4. Just read in the Melbourne Sun this morning that some low life dumped a new born puppy, umbilical cord and sac still attached. It was by luck that a worker heard the whimpering of the tiny puppy who had several people combing through the trash in the dumpster to find the tiny baby. The puppy is now in safe hands, thanks to these these life savers. I'll bet the ****** owner won't get the message and leave his bitch entire to have this scenario repeated again and perhaps again. I just don't get it.
  5. When they're available,I get baby veal ribs and I am able to take off a fair bit of meat for their meaty part of their meal. There is also always plenty of meat left on the bones.
  6. I'd probably steer clear of the gravy at this stage. Do you have any mince in the fridge? Usually that's fed when they are weaning off mum.
  7. I also have to disagree about making it out of the RSPCA's hands alive. I would assume that the 'viable' dogs would have been found homes. Just as an example, that poor black lab, renamed Tess, who was at the end of the program with her new owner is proof that the RSPCA did all it could to save these dogs. What about the one who had cataract surgery. Not an organization that doesn't care. What did you expect them to do with the pups. Give them away? They would need to recoup expenses. I do agree that the sentence handed out to the dreadful owners is too lenient.
  8. I agree. They did what they thought was best and obviously not everyone agrees.

  10. Silly question, as I'm not involved in the showing or breeding world, but wouldn't the judges naturally be drawn towards the dog with a full tail rather than the one with the docked one? I'm only asking because it's illegal in Australia.
  11. I have a mini schnauzer 20 weeks and at his puppy vaccination the vet advised me to start his heartworm at around 6 months. I give my other boy Sentinal Spectrum chews and he gobbles everything as does the puppy, so I don't envisage any problems medicating our new family member.
  12. I use Sentinal Spectrum and it states on the packet to give with a full meal, I winder if it's the dame for all the heart worm treatments.
  13. Having lived in a brand new home with 2 mini schnauzers, before we sold the home after 2 years, the entire bottom storey had to be sanded and polished because it was open plan. When building our current home, we decided to tile the entire area 220mtrs. with porcelein tiles, our bedroom included only because of the dogs. No wear and tear.
  14. Becks, he has eaten the carcases up until this morning. He came home on dry food and cooked chicken mince. His transition to raw took about 3 days, and he is one that really enjoys his food. I'll try lunch and see how he goes. I have had minis in the past and luckily none of mine have ever been fussy eaters and this one is not going to have the chance to be lol. He is not showing any sign of being off colour so hopefully, this is a once off. If it continues beyond today I'll take him to the vet for a look.
  15. Thanks for the replies. I can say with authority lol, that he is definately not off colour. He was just in the shower with my husband and he is doing zoomies around the house with his 'big brother'. He has lost teeth and I have noticed in a couple of spots the adult ones coming up. This is definately a one off, but as you can imagine, I don't want him off his food for too long, but at the moment it is not an emergency. He was offered chicken necks, portions of chicken wings and then mince and small chunks of meat but sort of played with it.
  16. My 19 week old mini schnauzer puppy has started teething and usually is a guts, eating everything offered. This morning, I offered his breakfast of raw meaty bones as I usually do, and he started 'playing' with it. I took it away and offered him muscle meat instead. The same response. I then took away his bowl and so far, he has gone without. Up till today, he has been on 3 feeds a day, eagerly eating anything put down. I certainly don't want him to become a fussy eater. Is it because he no longer wants 3 feeds a day, or could it be the teething? Any ideas?
  17. I think crates are wonderful. To me it's a godsend. When we brought our new puppy home at 8 weeks the breeder commented that he had never been in a crate before, so I dreaded the first night. At bed time I put him in at around 11pm. and didn't hear from him until 7.30 the following morning. He happily goes into the crate each night and when we have to go out during the day for a couple of hours or so. I wouldn't trust him in the house unrestrained when I'm not there to supervise. At least I know where he is.
  18. I have found some of the worst offenders are the educated and well to do professionals. Wonder what their back yards look like. I live in the neighbouring suburb to a well to do area (cue huge mansions on the hill) and i've never seen poop on our dog walks. I must be lucky The majority of dogs round here are little ones though, when I turn up to the grooming parlour all the doggies are getting out of their BMW's, mercedes and Range Rovers  they probably have doggie walkers and they do pick up of pooch and poo. lol
  19. There's one thing we all need to remember. Even though I love my dogs, probably more than life itself, but I respect the fact that not everybody loves, or even likes dogs. If we expect people to be tolerent of what some dog owners do, then we should be tolerent of those who are not dog owners. It's probably hard for them to realise our feeling and actions towards our pets.

  21. It is an utter disgrace. It's these sort of irresponsible doggy people that tar the responsible ones amongst us with the same brush. It's the same at our local park and personally, I can't stand all the crap around the place. There are also signs and numerous places to get the poo bags, but it seems there are quite a lot of illiterate people among our community. At the weekend, there are sports clubs that use the park for soccer and football in the winter and cricket in the summer. Must be a minefield out there.
  22. Yes and we have all been taught that we should always ask first if we can pat someone's dog. At least the OP did do that, but she got an unexpected answer. My pup doesn't like to be picked up by people he is not familiar with and at the park the other day, a lady picked him up without asking and when he realised it wasn't me holding, he let out an almighty scream. The look on her face was priceless. Serves her right is all I can say.
  23. I took my mini schnauzer boy to the vet when I first got him at 8 weeks for a general going over and asked the question of calcium, as I also feed raw. At that stage he was only eating chicken necks and the vet did suggest either puppy kibble or added calcium powder. As he has now progressed to a bigger selection of raw meaty bones, he doesn't get the calcium powder any more. He gets a small handful of the puppy kibble with his lunch, only because I want to use it up rather than throwing it out.
  24. Well folks,I tried feeding my little poo eating pup lol pineapple. He who normally eats what is put down for, lest he goes hungry from one meal to the next. He ate everything in his plate EXCEPT the pineapple.
