My 4 year old mini schnauzer boy had a seizure around 30 minutes ago. He was I believe unconscious and went very stiff and having spasms, lost his bodily functions and it lasted under a minute, although it felt much more at the time. When he came around, he was disorientated and growled and barked at me initially and then obviously recognized me and started wagging his tail. He seems back to his normal self as if nothing happened. He had a seizure last year in September and then had one in November. Nothing more until now. I will be calling my vet tomorrow but should I be very concerned, and is this classed as serious?

I'm planning to have my mini schnauzer desexed early next year and want to prepare myself with an Elizabethan collar. In the past, I have used the rigid ones and frankly, they have been a pain for the wearer and restrictive. Because my boy is crate trained for night time sleep, getting in and out with the rigid collar I think will prove difficult. I have seen lately that there are soft ones around, including a blow up one. Who has used one of these and which type do you think is the best to buy?

I'm so sorry to hear about this awful outcome. You did everything you could and you gave Jed every chance to a better life. I don't think you could have given him anymore. Bless you for what you did. RIP Jed. Run free Jed

Barf Vs Super Premium Commercial Foods
twodoggies2001 replied to Inka3095's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I know it's ridiculous. Chicken necks and frames are the same! I've seen them in the supermarket for between $3-$5 p/kg. What a rip off! I buy mine from my butcher at $1.50 and $1 respectively -
Barf Vs Super Premium Commercial Foods

Really??????? No vet clinic I have ever worked in was paid for selling any food. I would love to know who does actually get paid for selling dog food wouldn't it stand to reason that the more the clinic has to sell off their shelves, the more chance of making sales and more profits? -
Can I ask was this a intrahepatic or extrahepatic shunt? I believe it was extraheptatic

I know the feeling and just how attached we become to our puppies. Years ago we bought a miniature schnauzer puppy from a reputable breeder with whom we are still the best of friends. My boy at 6 months was diagnosed with a liver shunt and he was referred to the Werribee vet teaching hospital and initially he was put on a low protein diet. He was producing crystals that eventually turned into stones that caused blockages. This was the only symptom except for vomiting from time to time. It was evident that this didn't help him and it was decided to operate on him at Werribee. The surgeon did warn me that there was a chance his liver may not cope with the extra blood flow after the shunt was clamped off. I told him if this was the case, to not bring him around because the prognosis was not good and he would eventually die anyway. By the time I came home within a few minutes the surgeon called to say the surgery was a success. He lived to 14.5 years old. Initially his diet was adjusted but then he was basically back to normal. It did cost thousands of dollars but my husband and I decided to give him every chance. If you feel that's the path you want to take, then go with it, otherwise in your own heart there will always that question of 'what if'.

That's not a nice thing to say. Not all elderly people are like that so you shouldn't generalise. I've met some pretty nasty and rude young ones too.

Yep, Lenerds are awesome! The first time I went there I had no idea how much they were as they were out the back with no signs. She said $5 and I said uh, what? I had a $20 note out ready and wasn't expecting her to say $5 I reckon if they didn't need to put something through the till they'd just give them away. $5 for what quantity? Sorry, I posted before I read how many.

Vets Say Owners To Blame For Ballooning Dogs
twodoggies2001 replied to samoyedman's topic in In The News
All of my dogs past and present have been desexed and none of them he been overweight. Being desexed is no excuse. The real reason is the owners obviously have the willpower to say no. We need to be hard hearted Hannah and not gibe in to those pleading brown eyes lol. There's a woman who walks a beagle at out local park, and I remember when she was a pup she was lean and gorgeous. Fast forward 12 months or so and that poor beagle can hardly walk around the park. She actually waddles and it's heartbreaking to see. If that's not cruelty, then what is? Just as bad as starving. -
Unless you grow and then kill your own meat and grow your own veggies (if you feed them veggies), you don't actually know what they're ingesting. At least I know it is meat, bones fresh fish and vegetables not some mush in a can or dry food in a bag. At least I have the control of what goes into their mouths in the way of supplements and at least I know that whatever meat they are fed is from the same butcher shop that I buy my own meat in. How would I not know what they are ingesting? How do I really know what's in a can or bag? I know what comes out is not huge and smelly.

This is the reason I choose to feed my boys a raw diet, human grade. At least I know what they are ingesting.

Bilious Vomiting Syndrome In Dogs
twodoggies2001 replied to ChewieTAG's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Are you adding any supplements and/or feeding bones or dry food?? That diet has next to no calcium in it. Personally I'd be adding some chicken wings and necks or switching him to something like VAN instead, regardless of what the breeder does. As far as desexing your dog, well you don't have to. There really is no rush and it certainly wont hurt him to stay entire. Re the vomiting, yes some dogs will eventually grow out of it. Space the meals out over the day, 3-4 smaller meals as opposed to 1-2 larger ones- and that should help. That's my thought too. Back in threads 18 and 21 I also mentioned the chicken because I thought the diet lacked calcium. My vet suggested the best source of calcium is through bones and when my pup was not long home, even though he was eating chicken necks for one of his meals, she suggested backing them up with s calcium powder until he could handle the wings and frames. I wonder if the breeder is giving the right advice and just how much experience he/she has had with puppy feeding. I could be wrong there. I do feed vegetables too, but this makes up only a small proportion of the feed as is the liver which can be too rich if given too freely. -

I didn't get those chicken wings , etc type as worry will splinter etc. I do proportion all the recipe with grams and so on You didn't actually answer my question. Does he get the same amount of vegetables as he does meat, more or does he get less? The bones are good for teeth and I have mini schnauzers and they eat them with no trouble at all. The bones is also a good source of calcium. -

I got the recipe from Snowy's breeder and stick with it. It works well for him and good for his skin & coat. I am happy that it is a healthy mix. All human grade food so will need to prepare beforehand. Mixture of pumpkin, sweet potato, carrot, silver beet, chicken liver, rice, celery, raw beef, chicken breast, etc. I wonder if the breeder has already perfected the recipe that works for Snowy.. and his other shih tzu. Breeder did say that he will throw up if I feed him flax seed how much of the biscuit you gives him for supper? A hand full or it's a bigger size treat type of biscuit? Do you ever feed bones that he can actually digest such as chicken wings, chicken necks or frames. n proportion, how much is meat and how much is vegetable and rice? -

Thanks! Saw the article too and some other sites. hmm, I wonder this syndrome affects any dogs with sensitive stomach or dogs that produced heaps gastric juice? I am feeding him few mix of vege, chicken liver, rice that are baked and raw beef, with also chicken breast. Perhaps it's the yogurt treat that is not making his tummy happy. Does he get chicken liver at every meal? If you do, I think that the liver would be far richer than the yoghurt. I feed my dogs non fat yoghurt and only very small portions of chicken probably twice a week with their other meat. -
I think you are fortunate to have someone (in this case your inlaws) living next door to you. If it were me, I would appreciate the fact that my pup was having interaction and training and most of all company during the day. Why would you want to lock your pup away all day till you come home to make it miserable when it can have fun and company with someone who obviously cares about the pup very much. I think your problem with your inlaws stems not from this pup but could be more deep rooted but that's not my concern. You say you love your pup but you are willing to lock her away for the day just so the inlaws don't have access to her because you want her to love you. Love can't be bought. Love comes from the heart. I actually feel sorry for the pup. She must be getting lots of mixed messages and if I were you I would either hand over the pup to your inlaws and have her visit you or leave it as it is and be thankful she is loved and looked after by them.

Thank goodness my vet advocates raw and natural feeding. Having said that, she does stock commercial dog foods because some clients want that but is at her happiest when she learns her patients are fed raw. I always knew that BARF stood for bones and raw food, and never connected this term to the patties.

Not that it makes this despicable act any different, but was it his puppy or did this pup belong to somebody else.

Great calcium! agreed, Gus gets the WHOLE thing :) dogs can breakdown bones they can break down egg shell haha its great calcium and no waste... I leave whole ones in the back yard for Gus to hunt :) he loves it. I feed raw too but I haven't fed egg shell because I was of the impression that the edible bones in the diet was enough for the calcium side of it. You don't have to feed the shell. Some dogs love it though. I normally don't because mine will only eat the shell if I disguise it, crushing it up into a powder. Plus they primarily get their eggs scrambled  I hard boil mine. What we do for our dogs eh! :D
