They sure do know how to make us worry. After going through an episode of emergency care for pancreatitus with Jasper, our pup started vomiting the other day, so off to the vet. He of course didn't act his normal self. Thank goodness it was really nothing and after fasting him most of the day, an anti nausea shot and several dollars later it all turned out good. I tell the boys to be good and well from now on. Hope they'll listen to what I say.

He has only just recently started to do this. I would say about 3 weeks ago. Up until then he has been very reliable in the house. I wonder if this could in some way be related to him having a a seizure on a Sunday morning and then the following Tuesday come down with a pancreatitus attack. My vet seems to think that the seizure and attack could be related.

I think he is marking too. The pup is now 8.5 months old and they get on beautifully. There is no animosity between the two of them. I'm trying to hold off with desexing until the pup is over 12 months old, for the good of the pup but may have to look into doing it earlier.

Sorry, I'm not quite sure what you mean. All in all, Jasper is a good boy and listens to and does what is asked of him, so I am at a loss to understand what privileges you may be referring to. When I catch him starting to lift a leg, which is not that often, he is told no and he stops immediately. I am not always there so I can't stop him 100% of the time. I'd restrict his access to the rooms unless you are there to watch him, so you CAN stop him 100% of the time. Open plan living.

Could People Think You Have Abused Your Dog?
twodoggies2001 replied to far_kenell_73's topic in General Dog Discussion
Our mini schnauzer, now gone to the bridge was absolutely petrified of squeeky toys and children. We got him from the breeder at 10 weeks and he had never come into contact with small kids whilst under her care. He was also terrified of anyone sneezing. -
Thanks for the replies. I just want to point out that Jasper is not feeling threatened by the pup or has UTIs. They adore each other snuggle up together more often than not and look out for each other. They have a mutual respect for each other too. The pup knows his place and if need be by some chance, we make sure he does. Jasper is always first to be attended to because no matter what, Jasper is always No. 1. I want to keep the pup entire for at least 12 months so he can mature physically, but there is no question that he will be neutered. I'm just thinking that Jasper is marking to keep his little 'brother' in the know that he is top dog. To me he will always be that. Is there any product that I can use to stop him marking?

As the title says, we have a problem with Jasper. He is now just over 4 years old, and seemingly recovered from his bout of pancreatitus thank goodness, he has started weeing in the house. He did this a couple of times before his attack. It doesn't occur all the time and there are times that I can foretell he will lift his leg against one of my pot plants or furniture and I immediately stop him. He has doggy door access and this has always worked well. I am just wondering if he is doing this because of Elliot, our 8 month old mini who we haven't neutered as yet. I would like to wait until he is between 12 and 18 months old. Is there anything I can use to stop him doing this? Thank goodness we have a fully tiled floor. I must add that when I clean up, I don't make a big deal out of it, I just do so without a word.

Thank you Sandra777. No, I'm not in a hurry to have him neutered and I'll take that into account. He does look physically mature but is still a puppy at heart.

My mini schnauzer pup is now 8 months old. I am of course intending to neuter him but am not too sure at what age this should be done. Jasper was done at 6 months of age. My previous mini who has now crossed the bridge was done when he was 9 months old because he had other health issues. I have been told that if I could leave it until he's around 9 - 12 months old, he will not grow as tall. I'm thinking to have him done early January but may wait until he's 12 months old. What do you think?

Shelties are wonderful dogs. I suggested a sheltie! My siblings concern is that it will require alot of grooming. Sheesh!! The things people worry about. One dog - take it to a groomer every few weeks. Shouldn't they be brushed around 2 times a week?

Off To The Vet Tomorrow

My boy is continuing to improve. He ate 4 small serves yesterday and showing signs of wanting to play, not with the usual gusto, but that will come no doubt. None of us including our bank account want to go through this again. The vet hospital did give us the option to take him to our own vet to cut down the costs but hubby and I decided to leave his at the hospital because of the 24 hr. care. Mind you, I could have bought 2 mini schnauzer puppies for Jasper's 3 night stay lol. -

I'm glad to say that he's even asking for food now. He is being fed small meals several times a day. Huge improvement. Thanks everyone. -

Jasper came home this morning. He would not eat on his own at the vets but did take some food now that he's home. I'm giving him little often. Time for recovery and rest for my gorgeous boy. -

We had a dog at the vets once and they wanted her to eat before sending home. Eventually they sent her home anyway and the first thing she did was hoover down the food. They were right! She was just pining for home. We decided to give it an extra day and then see if he should come home. You're probably correct in what you say, but I just don't want any complications and prefer to have him at the emergency than home just for now. He is very attached to me and I have not been in to see him because I think the stress on when when I leave him there may upset the applecart. -

An update on Jasper. He is still at the emergency but his bloods have come back satisfactory. The only problem is he won't eat on his own which for him is very unusual as he usually just hoovers it down. They syringed him and he has kept that down, but I would prefer he stay in until he eats on his own. Hopefully that will be tomorrow. -

I know. The vet explained to me that it is not only through eating too much fat. She also said it could be through just having a tummy upset and it just progresses. My first mini now departed had a dreadful bout of pancreatitis a few years ago which I believe was brought about by Prednisol. Schnauzers apparently predisposed to this horrible affliction. Hubby says it's time to change breeds but I won't hear of it. -

No Coogie. The only other permanent member in our household is my husband and he knows not to feed the dogs anything they shouldn't have. -

Hello, everbody and thanks for your kind thoughts and wishes. Well, I just heard from the vet and thankfully, there is no obstruction and he was diagnosed with pancreatitus. This truly floored me because I am so vigilant with the way I feed my boys, knowing Schnauzers are not to have fatty foods. He of course is still in emergency on a drip and still needs to be closely monitored and they will attempt to feed him tonight. If he keeps that down he may be coming home late on Thursday. Fingers crossed all will go well. -

My boy Jasper went into emergency yesterday, after starting up his vomiting again. They actually started smelling like poo. Just spoke to the vet and he's stopped vomiting but is in obvious pain. The bloods came back as pancreatitus but they suspect there may be a blockage as he still has a painful tummy and panting most of the night. He's off to xray soon to see if they can find anything there. When we came home yesterday after the vet visit, our young pup was looking for him and crying. Those two are inseparable. Keep us in your thoughts please. -

At the moment he is sleeping on his bed. He followed me into the study after sleeping on the couch and he has not vomited for about 3 hours now. -

It's a public holiday in Melbourne. He looks as if he could wait until tomorrow morning. -
Well it looks like I'm off to the vet tomorrow with Jasper and I'm wondering if this could be related. I posted a couple of days ago that Jasper had a seizure after having 2 late last year. He came out of it and was back to his usual self again and which seemed like no ill effects. The vet's office suggested to bring him in for a blood test which may shed some light on what is causing the seizures, but not as a mater of urgency. This morning, he ate his breakfast with his usual gusto and then about 30 minutes later noticed him looking hang dog. He has been eating grass today. Since then he has vomited several times, the first of course all his breakfast and then on yellow watery muck. I am hoping it is not pancreatitus, even though I am very careful not to feed my boys any fatty foods. He is not on any medication so if it is indeed pancreatitus then it is not caused by that. All in all, looking at him he doesn't seem critical otherwise he would be off to emergency. Why do these things always seem to occur out of business hours? He is not looking for food, so I'm not offering and I wouldn't anyway.

Which Is Best To Buy?

Thanks everyone for your input. I have just completed an order for the King Cloud collar from clean run. I think it's best to have it on hand just in case.
