  1. Kirty, I sympathize with you. You will remember Benson from the eye vet clinic in Melbourne and his ups and downs. One day I took him to my regular vet for a wellness check, along with my other boy. She checked him over and told me she saw a very unhappy dog in him, and my hubby and I decided there and then to give him peace. I knew it wouldn't have been far off, but honestly didn't expect it on the day. In hindsight it was for the best. All the best, hugs.
  2. Sorry if I offend any Husky owners out there but Huskies do look intimidating when they approach other dogs. I know this does not mean attack mode but there are times when I'm uncomfortable around them.
  3. Yup, that was definitely my first thought. She brought her son along too to some of the classes and he obviously adored the puppy and they participated in the training activities etc. I don't think she's a terrible owner, maybe just terribly misinformed :/ Most pet owners are. That's why trying to teach the 'ignorent' by the experienced is the way to go.
  4. I just paid $855 for the removal of 15 teeth, including cleaning the remaining teeth and antibiotics.
  5. I know all that and dogs can survive on non meat diets, but I would use the veggies as a filler as you stated, but if it were me, I would feed more non fatty meat and use less of the veggies.
  6. I'm concerned that the meal consists mainly of mixed vegetables. Dogs can and do eat veggies but they are carnivores and I would base the meals on meat, with the addition of veggies, not the other way around.
  7. What about organ meat as in liver or kidney. I think even if she doesn't have a medical problem, she needs to have more of a variety of protein, not just mainly chicken.
  8. We go back to posts discussing breeder's non responses to the enquiries of the 'ordinary' wanna be puppy buyer. Years ago, my husband and I went to have a look at a litter of black and silver puppies at a then well known puppy mill breeder/vet who had a shop set up. We just wanted to see the difference between the black and silver and salt and pepper as puppies. The poor little mites were brought out from the back of the shop revealing thinly fur covered bodies. My heart told me to get them out of there but my head told me otherwise. The price i ended up paying for a puppy from a registered breeder was actually less than asked at the pet shop. I am adding that I would never buy a puppy from anywhere other than a registered breeder and I also add that personally, I have had no problem getting responses from any. It could be that the breed I have, (miniature schnauzers) are a breed that need regular grooming etc. and I have a proven track record so to speak. I understand that the majority of breeders would prefer to have their dogs to go to owners that have certain knowledge of the selected breed. BUT, there has to be the first time and for the puppy buyer if there is no joy from breeders, off they go to the pet shop to aid the bank accounts of said shops and byb. I know it works both ways and potential buyers can at times be a pain but how else are they to learn.
  9. Have you tried a poultry shop. I buy mine from one in East St. Kilda, along with chicken feet, necks and frames.
  10. I have encountered this problem twice, but not with my own. There was an entire French Bulldog, who was constantly being bullied by the neutered boys at the park and another time it was an American Staffy puppy, who for some reason, every dog he came across put him in his place even though he didn't need to be admonished.
  11. There was no mention by the vet of periodontal disease. Just that it was very likely, because of the way I feed my boys, a genetic problem.
  12. I am still stunned and mortified. Jasper had 15 teeth removed. I felt so bad for him and the vet assured me that it was not what I was feeding him. She feels in his case it is a genetic thing. She said his mouth was toxic and it was very lucky I brought him in when I did. Had I noticed any problems with him eating he would have been there much earlier. Admittedly, he had bad breath, but it was not constant. The boy certainly is stoic. He is happy with a waggy tail, eating soft food for the first five days, and has not lost his appetite. We're back in 2 weeks for a recheck and from then on 6 monthly. My pocket is now much lighter too but them the breaks.
  13. The rest need to be cleaned anyway. He had breath that could kill, so that is the main reason he went in today. I would rather take action now than have problems for him further down the track. That shows the RMB's aren't cleaning their teeth effectively. He eats on one side of his mouth The side he uses was sparkling white. The other side was the problem. It could have been been because of the loose teeth, which shows that the RMB'S half work lol. I'm just wondering if the recreational bones could have been the culprit and loosened the teeth.

  15. This morning I took Jasper to the vet for a general check up, titre testing and to have his teeth cleaned. When the vet had a quick look in his mouth, she informed me that 2 of his teeth need to be pulled because they are loose. This really knocked me because my boys are raw fed, and they get raw meaty bones, plus once a week, what I call recreational bone and in between bully sticks. I thought the bones and bully sticks would have done the cleaning part. It seems that he eats on one side of his mouth. He showed no signs of discomfort because of his loose teeth, so I didn't worry until I was told. He certainly didn't have any lack of appetite and was his usual happy self. I'm very disappointed in myself and feel like I have been a neglectful owner.
  16. I use ziwipeak as treats. Even with one dog, these are expensive!! But they smell really nice and doesnt go bad quickly so the occasional treat is still good. I don't think it matters how the food/treat smells before it is fed. I would imagine it would depend on the reaction it could have on the individual recipient. Somefoods may react differently with different dogs.
  17. They would have declined that as that is also illegal. If a real estate asked me to pay more bond or rent because I had a pet I'd tell them to shove it and report them to the RTA. We had a situation where some prospective tenants looked into renting one of our town houses. Our agent, who knows the rules and regulations said that now in Victoria, bonds can be up 6 week's worth of rent, not just one month. That goes for tenants without pets too. The place was really unsuitable for a husky as the courtyard was much to small in my opinion anyway.
  18. Some agents will ask for a larger amount for the bond and personally, for a land lord it does show good faith from the renter. Even though we have not refused pets at our properties, somehow we have never had tenants with pets move in.
  19. It's illegal to offer more rent. Why is it illegal to offer more rent? I have never heard of that one before.
  20. I too have Mini Schnauzers, and they don't have an odour, even after 3 - 4 weeks after the bath. Sometimes though in the hot weather they do have smelly paws but I put that down to them sweating through them. With yours, could it be what they are being fed?
  21. I believe it is your obligation to consult with the real estate agent as the first step. If as some posters have stated, you are a responsible tenant and your present animals are not causing any problems, then I don't believe a land lord would not object. I am a landlord and have no objections to tenants having animals at the property but on one occasion we had an apartment to rent out. The prospective tenants have a cat. No problem, but just before signing them up, they told, not asked the agent that they would be putting a cat ladder from the balcony down to the front garden. This was facing the street and would not present a pretty picture not to mention what other owners would think. They were turned down. Honesty up front is the best way to go.
