Kiri, like any breed you may get a "yappy"Summar her bark is so sharp & loud,I hate hearing it,only hear it if some-one arrives,so still not a yapper,I couldn't have a yapper drive me insane...er. Well,I don't know of a Chi that is not fastidious with food & spoilt!! Bindie, well she has only lost 500grams,so 4 kilo, but she really appears so much more trimmer.I have opened the R/D,I know I must do it.No ecuses, although as you know I have a had a lot going on here, thankfully it is all back to normal now,Emily is 100%,back to her usual of trying to pinch every-one elses food, she is another that I will have to monitor re weight. You may remember after the f/up with vet starting the H/D,I then went to the Ormeau holistic vet & have her on all the recommendations.I was told about this Orthopedic Surgeon,so he was willing to look at Bindies xrays & he said her hips are normal. This really throws a spanner in the works. What was my ex-vet thinking, who can one trust!!!!I intend for him to now have a phyisical examination of her in particular R patella,it has only been after the knife went in that she has been sort of curling that leg around as she walks.Specialist may be of the opinion that it be operated on or he may say leave it for now. What ever I will be guided by his opinion. I am in touch with an older couple on acerage with a pool, which would be great for Bindie.I need to meet & discuss with them as to whether they would still continue on the BARF after her weight loss has been maintained & that she will get the exercise etc. I will get her speyed(in any case) & patella operated on if this is the advice,I would never pass her on with problems,if the advice is "we'll do the patella" at a later stage well I will pay for it........when ever this time arrives. http://i804.photobucket IMG]http://i804.photobucket.com/albums/yy329

I feel like I'm on trial! I came for advice& support but it has turned into another topic on code of ethics. The more information I share the more ammunition I am giving. The 2 previous pups are desexed & the same with these 2 & yes all advised. The vet trimmed her palate but also said it wasn't necessary but it "may" help with her snorting-snoring,the short nose in the breed doesn't help.

Yes,Steve I agree. It was not an intended mating, the first I even knew she was in season was when the male showed interest so I took that as day one but in fact it was further along.always set out to do what is the "right thing" & be responsible by the breed & not pass these hereditary things along.

Yeah,I thought Ivory & Ebony!!! Emilys' Mum was Black/white /tan and she only ever had one Black/white girl I was a bit surprised.Yes,as small as Summar is she free whelped,no dramas, you may have seen the post where she at 3 weeks gave me a huge scare, lack of calcium with feeding but that was soon fixed.A wonder I have not had a heart attack with the scares I've had!! A bit like pain, one gets over it re the joy I recieve with pups, very scary at the time.

I don't know how, give me the idea if you wish.I tried to compress video ages ago and I had blocked my email for days and haven't tried since,some-times I find how to do some-thing and don't go there for a month & I foget how I actually did it!takes so much time just playing around "trying" re photos & video,I always give my buyers a video DVD & also a DVD with the puppies photos as they were from day one until now,I'd appreciate it if it were done for me.

See Summars pups now 8 weeks old,and also see when Summar jumped into help her sister out,she also looked so guilty.....omg when I saw that I thought how cute is this....Emily didn't think so!

Don't let my story put you off,Chihuahuas they steal your heart, such little charactors,if you have to breed and have a litter do it at the vets, second best have a very experienced breeder with you.I am always concerned at whelping time one can never be sure what will happen, even if the last time the bitch free whelped, complications can & do happen,no matter how prepared you may think you are.

Emily is doing well & back to normal, pups are contented also. I did have a vet on standby, lot of good that was she was not there for me. I need another vet I can trust to be there for me,one doesn't know until one has been let down. As far as breeding with Emily,I considered the first litter was just bad luck & my inexperience, every time there is some-thing different, most breeders would say the same, always some-thing to learn. They were whelped nomally be it breach.I decided I wanted her to have "live" puppies and not to have to go though whelping to risk having them born dead ,so I elected to have a caesarean for her sake. This time a caesarean was planned as I had decided to have her speyed at the same time. No matter what any-one thinks I did what I thought best for Emily on all occasions. The trachea problem, well I don't know if any-one on forum has had it done but from what I've read up on it it is not that successful,I will play this one by ear.Looks a very complicated operation & very risky.

I am so glad it was someone else said this because I would probably have said a bit more. I'll answer the flak t'morrow.Later today if time. Emily is so so much better this a.m.only a snorkle now, normal for her & ate her breakfast of roast chicken.,needed no encouragement.Looks much happier,a case of waiting for antibiotics to kick in I suppose.

Vets give NO BLOODY advice, just battle and suffer though, sort it out yourself I"m disgusted with the vets I know,it is all about the &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Yey Persy, cheaper to buy one,but the bowl & steam is sufficient, she doesn't like it...too bad Yeah, blanket on low

I have on video, vet was not remotely interested, took camera to Clinic for todays consult.OMG where can i find a compassionate GOOD vet

Well 2 vets opinions no ,no more pups & scan done on the occasion. I'm so afraid Emilys' next breathe is her last, this is so distressing.... hardly coping, how much more so for her, just wish I could put a tube down & give her oxygen. She is still gasping, honking,I've given ashma stuff to try open the bronchial tubes. My worst fear is a trachea flattering. Please God help Emily...now. No improvment will ring Vet t'morrow re air & condition etc.Not eating today so have given Nutrigel& glucose, she is my first born& would never part with her,not ever.....I'm so stressed out, sorry for the worry for all Bridie, don't you have an emergency vet? If your wee dog is finding breathing that hard now, she may not be breathing at all by morning I don't know how you can stand it, I would be handing her over to a vet ASAP. No,no vet wants to even know u after hours, emergency vets only that charge $120 for a consult I need a good nights sleep.can't at the moment ,so concerned ,I'm also worried re the panting what toll it has on her heart

Is elongation of the palate common in Chi's? and are they often such poor whelpers? I have to say you are brave because I wouldnt really want to continue a line that could not whelp freely- I dont think I would be able to survive the stress! I have heard that it can be common in small breeds & tracheas......go google which explains it so much more than I could. Emily is from a line of FREE whelpers, her Mum had litters on her own,her sisters, never had the worries like I have with Emily.See aboves where I said she whelped them but not with-out difficulty. One has to have faith & trust that "the Breeder" is telling you the truth re the lines,no way any-one would purposedly breed knowingly on any-thing but a free whelper, heard there are some that do,enough woes with-out buying them in,first timers is always an anxious time because an unusual birth position of pup or very large pup ,wise to have female larger & keep the stud small IMHO.Stress & panic. The other night came upon me so suddenly, gave me such a fright had to go to the loo twice before I set out, reaction on the nervous system,I tried to put the kidney basket in front seat so I could see her,in my right mind I would know it was impossible & to put her in a carry basket, thinking what will I put her in!!put the mobile down & torch couldn't find them, left my handbag outside front door...........it is called not thinking straight,I am a very well organised person but these things throw me,being alone does not help at times such as these, blackest night out,no moon.

No,there will be no more litters this was a plan for the last litter,I'll give bit of honey. At the moment she is breathing ....panting really fast.....I can't even count them. These situations a very stressful.

omg WISH I COULD JUST CUT & PASTE PHOTOS! AND i HAVE LEFT CAPS ON. Emily is in her 5th year, first time 2 breach, both dead, went to vet(bloody Saturday again late arvo) that day at 12.30pm said no she is not ready for a few days.Three that arvo it started, called for help off neighbour, to hold her why I helped birth them. Last year I insisted on a caesarean as I didn't want to see her (or me) go though this again,we had 3 healthy babies on the 60th day.Saturday when I called the clinic they didn't really want me to come in,didn't I have confidence & this time may be different they said.On my own no bloody way, with Emilys" history,I do not take unnecessary chances with my lot, can't hold her and help birth at the same time, besides if some-thing goes wrong I am surely at the right place! Do wonder some-times.If I was loaded I would go to the Emergency Clinic,no worries.Last time there at 1am 5 years ago cost me $1,700 for caesarean, one pup.I some-times (often)think us breeders are mad it is not a money making business,my lot owe me $6,000 & on going,I do it becuase I am hooked,some-times wish I had never seen a Chihuahua!!!!! Yes BYB,well my sister has 2 Poodles & is of the opinion because she has larger dogs(Minature Poodles)she will not have the dramas I have,(your dogs are so small)don't mean to be mean or wish her bad luck but the only way people like this will be cured is to have Dramas & hit their hip pocket. She has no idea, nothing is set up for it or for a litter on the ground,I asked why would you want to put yourself through this, lame excuse is to have a litter to pay for the 2 she wants to keep, don't get me started on BYB I don't know where to stop. When I look at those Rescue sites I cry my eyes out, what awful bloody humans there are & then what wonderful people the Rescuers are,do a mighty job and I sing their praises.I'm a bit emotional today, sleep deprived & I know it is terrible for Emily trying to get breath but the noise is driving me nuts. A bit carried away here at the moment, only came to say I forget how to do the photo.........I'll go have a look, see what I can do I must say it is really good to speak to speak to like minded folks, theraputical as they say

Been to another vet, really swollen tonsils,a wonder she tries to eat at all.Gave her an oxetosis(spell check!) injection & anti-biotic one as well, have anti-biotic tabs to continue with.I'm to put her over steam which I've been advised should help her breath easier,so congested, says this is all brought on over the stress of the whelping. Today being her 60th I had planned a blood test & "we" had planned to c/section & desex at the same time.Cannot plan any-thing with dogs.Saturday night she gave birth to the 1st(breach)male but he looked like he had been dead awhile(like a mustard colour around the edge of his tongue)he was large,2hours later normal birth another male & 3/4 hour later the last one.The first one was a dry birth, waters broke at home at 7pm & he was not born until 3 hours later. We had to help with birthing especially the first one, wondering if he may have drowned? Always glad when the births are all over, never know what can happen,BUT does it always have to be late at night and a week-end! I'll try post a photo soon ,because I know there will be some who will want to see what Emily looks like,it's nice to see who I am talking about. Thanks every-one

Yes,Kirty.Have just edited post, had scan done after last puppy, but scans have been wrong before, take all day to write of the birth dramas etc.Speak later

Saturday, panting all day Emilys' 58th day.At 7pm waters broke, straight to the clinic where I stayed until 3.30a.m.Delivered 3 pups. Yesterday the panting continued,to the point she wasn't settling,I had prepared to bottle feed, was gagging & on occasions vomiting, panting so hard her whole body was shaking.Concerned the gums had gone pale, also tongue blue.To me it seemed like she could not get air,has had previuos trachea enlongated palate operation. Spoke to a breeder & she thinks it it is not the problem, just the whelping has caused this.Gave calcium,Clavulox & glucose plus tried to cool her down although temp normal. This am not as much panting, very little, a little bit of goose humping.Had intended to visit the vet but I'm thinking this has decipitated and will go altogether, she is eating & settled with the pups. Has any-one had this, what causes it,what did you treat it with & how long does it last??? All advice appreciated.Been a hell of a long week-end. I think I better get her vet checked this morning,I really have no idea what I'm dealing with & am concerned.

Hell how very frustrating.I would have suggested all PP"s suggestions. How about minced chicken with parmeson cheese heated,I also use Nutrigel as supplement & stimulant, most likely take it from your hand. Where are all the good vets gone, that should & could make some useful suggestions.

Has any-one invested in a chastity belt for their female,if so are you satisfied that it is fool proof ?? I had often wondered if there was such a thing and found this site www.pabsforpets.com Very interested to hear the feed back & if they can be purchased in AU? I also wonder if female nappies could be adapted for the same cause? I have Chihuahuas. I eagely await your response. Thanks

Same here, large box as their bed, with-in a larger box as pen(largest LCD.TV box I can find) with newspaper, I believe this is why buyers often remark how well trained they are, they have become accustomed to it.Now 7 weeks & they are venturing out of the pen so I have 2 areas as well with newspaper on the floor.Late afternoons they come out with me under the pergola & will explore & find the lawn very soon. They don't do it in their bed once they are getting around. Thank goodness for boxes & newspapers,every-one saves their newspapers for me.
