  1. I don't know Kenny's story (ie if you have had him from a pup etc) but I would continue as normal and let him come to you when he is ready. If you start offering treats and going out of your way to indulge him, he may think that a) he was naughty and got told off b) that he was angry/upset at you and c) that you will then indulge him to make up. Anyway just my opinion, but go about your normal business and he should come up to you when he is ready. Susan
  2. The other case where the chef was allergic, got me thinking... what would happen if a person with a guide dog went into a restaurant where someone worked or was dining that was severely allergic to dogs? Obviously you cannot ask a blind person to leave or refuse admittance, but if another diner or a worker was allergic to the point they couldn't be around a dog (whether it be guide or other)...what would happen there?
  3. I had to buy a new dustpan and brush yesterday as Porthos chewed the handle on the brush.... also shoes!!!! He loves them! We have about 20 pairs stacked near our front door.... over the weekend, I have 20 shoes...combos of lefts, right and whole pairs....on my loungeroom mat.... he goes through 1 at a time and brings them back. If we ever lose him...we find him sitting between the shoes at the front door. :D
  4. I bought my older boy (now 16 months) from his Breeder when he was 12 months. He had been intended for showing and had not taken to it, he had had one failed placing (was there 24 hours) with a person who had a severe allergic reaction to him and was hospitalized. As a result, D'Artagnan (Tagnan) was timid and shy and not a-typical of the Cavalier King Charles Breed. The Breeder knew we wanted 2 puppies but had decided to purchase 1 at time...so she suggested we meet Tagnan and see what he acted like around us. Although he was shy at first, he did take to my husband almost immediately (who is also shy :D ) at the first meeting. We picked him up 2 weeks later and my husband had a week off work with him. Tagnan has since bonded with me and is very much a "Mummy's" boy ;) The breeder said to give it a month as it would take time for us all to develop a routine and for him to feel at home. She said she would take him back off of us and refund us, should it not be working. Although within a week he had settled, it did take the best part of the month for us all to develop into a comfortable pattern and for Tagnan to strut around like he owned the place. If think that if the Wei is too much for your family, then you should return him, however 1 week is not long enough for you to see the Dogs true nature or to develop a routine that works for you. Good Luck Susan
  5. I am sorry to hear that your Dog has HD Buying from a breeder doesn't completely safeguard your pet from ever getting anything. Sometimes things happen, even if both parent dogs, and parent dogs before them have been tested. Our last CKCS was bought from a breeder who heart tested and did all the things necessary for MVD which is a disease that a lot of CKCS can develop. Sam died at about 6 from MVD. Even knowing the problems CKCS can face, MVD, SM, Patella and eye issues....I still love the breed and have 2 sleeping behind me as I type this message. I bought both from a good breeder, heart tested etc etc but even so, I know it is not a 100% guarantee that they won't develop heart issues later on. The pain of losing Sam was great but hasn't put me off the breed.... I had 6 wonderful years with him. At the end of the day I prefer breeders.... I am sorry you have not had a good relationship with yours since the diagnosis. Susan
  6. My last Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (RIP) paws smelt like Milk Arrowroot Biscuits and I thought they were so cute...(mind you, it was probably a mixture of sweat and dog pee) My husband made me smell D'Artagnans paws and they smell like Milk Arrowroot Biscuits too Susan
  7. I have 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and they have the laundry plus a long hall way and back part of the house. It is all tiles. I put puppy pads down and they have 2 beds in different areas, plus kibble, 2 bowls of water and toys galore. My 15 week old puppy sometimes chews the puppy pads up.... but until I have a dog door installed, it is what it is. I don't crate mine...at night he sleeps in a crate (or sorts, I suppose) and will yap if he needs to go out for a toilet break. During the day if I am home, he will seek out the puppy pads and if they are not down in their usual spot will go outside to toilet....(99.9% of the time). He has been relatively easy to toilet train I think 7 hours of crating in the day is too much. Mine sometimes miss the puppy pad or chew it up before use.... I just clean up and move on. They don't do it when we are home, they both know to go outside and the little one lets us know in the night if he needs to go out. Good Luck Susan
  8. I am overweight....well...more than just over weight....so I am borderline paranoid about the amount I feed my two. When D'Artagnan came to us, he would pick at food and eat every 1-3 days...we now have him eating daily....so I adjust his food regularly and am concious that fat owner does not equal fat cavalier! Susan
  9. Has she just invited herself with her toddler? Bit rich really if you don't have a spare room anymore and you have a Dog, especially if her Toddler is scared of Dogs (not that I'd recommend leaving a Dog around a Toddler anyway...). I am in agreement with the others, I'd be suggesting she stay in a Motel. It is too much upheaval for you to move your Daughter or the Dog. If you don't have the room, you don't have the room. Period! Good luck with it....it's awful to be in these situations, isn't it? Susan
  10. My 2 are together when we go to work, but then I have Cavalier King Charles Spaniels....my older boy 16 months weighs 6.4kgs and my 15 week old Pup weighed 3.2kg at his last vet visit 3 weeks ago and would now defo be over 4kgs. I am not too concerned about them playing together...Tagnan (older boy) prefers to sleep or hide from the little terror who hangs off of his neck, tail, back legs, ears by his teeth. Susan
  11. {{{{hugs}}}} hope the news is better than you think. She is beautiful! Susan
  12. That sounds like a good weight for a Staffy. My Cavalier King Charles Pup who is nearly 15 weeks weighed 3.2kg last time he was at the vet which was 3 weeks ago.... So a Staffy being a larger breed seems to be a good weight to be 5.5 at 9 weeks :D Just my personal opinion though. Susan
  13. We took our two for a walk just as it was getting dark the other night and it was cool out (had been raining earlier).... both of them whined the entire way and seemed glad to be home When I bring the leads out, the puppy looks excited but Tagan just stares at us as if we're mad to even contemplate taking him away from couch time. :D
  14. I am biased as I have two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and have owned the breed before. My boys are just lovely *gushes*.... we waited a long time to get one and then decided to get two as both my husband and I work full time (although different hours) and so they would be alone for a good portion of the day. Everyone we spoke to/questioned didn't think we'd have a problem with two being alone. My older boy was with a pack of CKCS at the Breeders so was outside with them a lot, he has really thrived on the one2one contact my Husband and I have lavished on him....we have them in a routine for when we leave the house and a very spoilt routine for when my husband gets home. They sleep in our bedroom, lay on our couch, follow us everywhere and are just "cuddly" ... well my older boy likes his cuddles, the puppy has to be nearly asleep to cuddle.... otherwise the little begger bites.... I think Westies are lovely looking dogs but have never been around one.... Good Luck making your choice Susan
  15. My little one doesn't always go right away either. She may genuinely not need to go. They do say after food, water, play, sleep etc to take them out for a toilet break BUT mine doesn't always go. This morning he went to puppy class and for nigh on 2.5hrs he didn't pee - not even with food, excitement and other dog smells. Sometimes if mine is tired, he just won't pee - he goes and has a sleep and then runs out afterwards and has a looooooonnng pee If you are worried though, check with your vet Susan
  16. I wonder what the rules are for the City of Wanneroo - I must go look. I have both mine in collars but they are inside. The younger one likes to hang off the older ones collar sometimes which irritates me more than it does him. After reading this though, I have taken the collars off and just put them on for walks. I do worry though, as when I get a dog door installed and they can go out and in during the day, I'd prefer them to have ID on them besides their chips.... hmmm what to do, eh? Susan
  17. I look in the local pet store when I walk past and my heart goes out to the puppies in there but I would never buy one from a pet store. About a year ago, there were 2 very miss marked Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in the window.....I sent hubby in out of morbid curiosity to see how much they were. $995.... I would expect to pay roughly that from a breeder and for my money get papers, proof of clear heart and other breed prevalant issues and develop a relationship where by questions could be asked back and forth to determine that we were a right fit for the pup and vice versa. I walked away that day nearly in tears as I had never seen a CKCS in a pet store and it made me so sad. One sold right away whilst we were shopping but the other one was still there a week later. A colleague from work bought a CKCS from a petstore and within 2 days was at the vet and it was determined that the pup was very very sick and in fact, ended up dying. It wasn't parvo, I am not sure what it was. So to answer your question, Yes my heart goes out to the puppies, I cry inwardly when I see pups marked down or "Make us an offer" if they have been there for a few weeks....but I walk away knowing that I cannot support a store that sells live animals. Susan
  18. Porthos is nearly 13 weeks and it has been hard. He is lovely, sweet, adorable and my husband and I love him to bits BUT, he terrorises his older brother, D'Artagnan (Tagnan) (15 months) and since we have only had Tagnan since end of January....it's been rather a dramatic change. Porthos likes to drag Tagnan around by the ears or tail (he weighs 3.2kg and Tagnan 6.4kg so he is half the weight) Tagnan doesn't reciprocate very often - he normally runs and hides under our legs or on our bed once he has had enough.... He will get better with age and we are enrolling him in puppy and dog classes....but right now, he is a little scamp ;) Susan
  19. Erny is correct. My little one is on Hills Science Prescription for a sensitive stomach however you have the regular Hills Science in other places, it is just the prescription one that you purchase at the vets.
  20. My boy is nearly 14 weeks and most nights he can hold it from around 10-30pm to 5-6am. If you can hear him from where you sleep then just keep an ear out, I know mine has no problems letting me know he needs to go out.... mind you, he wakes my 15 month old up too and then they are both scampering around the garden at 3am....
  21. Our older boy D'Artagnan wasn't too keen when we brought Porthos home (he still isn't overly in love with the young scamp...as Porthos likes to hang off of his ears or bite Tagnan's tail and Tagnan is very shy, cuddly and docile whereas Porthos is not!) We got Tagnan at 13 months old (end of January) so we'd only had him around 6 weeks when Porthos came home (13 March). Porthos is 13 weeks old now. Not so keen. The first meeting. Porthos likes to follow Tagnan everywhere... here Tagnan was lying at my feet under the computer desk in a bid to get away... hmm didn't work! I know they will end up being firm friends - Porthos just has to get past this awkward puppy stage Susan
  22. It could be seperation anxiety... my 15 month old sometimes pees his bed during the day, we do leave puppy pads down (as we don't have a dog door yet) and he has used them but I guess they go where they feel comfortable and if they are a little anxious, where better than your bed or crate. I don't crate mine although they have got a sectioned off part of our room so it is almost crate like for night time sleeps. My 12 week old pup will wake us up in the night if he needs to pee but it is not a common thing. Is there a reason you don't want her sleeping in your room? LuvMyCav - Thanks for the reassurance... My hubby was thinking of booting them both out next time Susan
  23. I bought a 13 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel back in late January from a breeder. She'd intended to show him but he'd not taken to it and he'd had one failed placing with a buyer who ended up being allergic to his long hair (very old lady). We had originally wanted 2 pups (as we work, we thought 2 would keep each other company) and we just love the breed. Anyway we decided to buy him. He is very timid, shy and is frightened of some people - mainly young children, especially if they raise their voices around him. That being said, he was house trained, got used to us very quickly and is now devoted to us and he is a cuddler We will however have to take him to see a behavourist and take him to training classes as he does not understand commands such as "Sit" "Stay" etc. Last weekend our 10 week pup (same breed) came home. At first they didn't get on and sometimes the pup terrorises the older dog...but right now they are chasing eachother round the back garden for a stuffed elephant Anyway, I wouldn't discount an older dog - even with the challenges I face with mine, he is at the end of the day past the whole housebreaking, chewing everything stage and every day with him is just lovely :D Susan
  24. oh goodness, how adorable :D I swear if I wasn't into Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and already have 2 that I'd have one of them.....such beautiful expressions! Congratulations!!!! Susan
