I have done a bit of reading on this forum regarding BSL, and have found a lot of people are of the opinion to ban the practice of dog fighting, etc not the specific breed itself. These posts however mainly have the APBT in mind, I am wondering if people are also for the un-banning of the other breeds such as the Tosa, Fila, Presa, etc? Your thoughts?

I'm wondering if anyone trains their dog in weight pulling. If anyone has any information on this sport, such as what is a safe age to start, how much weight should be used, methods and the like it would be appreciated. If anyone has any negetive points also state them. I have read several breeds excel at this such as Amstaffs, Eng Staffs, APBT, mastiffs etc

I'd like to know if its alright to feed my dog (raw) chicken legs including the foot? Note, I am not talking about the drumstick part, but the actual leg (and foot). Thanks.

Physical Differences Between Amstaff & Apbt
GABBA replied to GABBA's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ah ok, yeh I'm not aware of this other thread either. To be honest I don't know much regard the apbt or the amstaff. I always though amstaffs were alot heavier though, in the 40kg range...As for the area, something should be done with the fence, regardless of the breed, be it pit bull, amstaff, gsd, Rottweiler, etc -
Physical Differences Between Amstaff & Apbt
GABBA replied to GABBA's topic in General Dog Discussion
Finally getting somewhere. I was always under the impression that the amstaff was a bigger/more solid dog. They are a different breed so surley there are some differences. As for the dogs, I don't live anywhere near them, the house abutts a park, so while I was there I saw them. It's funny how quickly people get defensive when anyone even mentions pit bill and amstaff together. They are dog breeds and this is a dog forum. -
Physical Differences Between Amstaff & Apbt
GABBA replied to GABBA's topic in General Dog Discussion
I see. Firstly I'll address geo, why would I come here and make up a story, I've recently purchased a dog and I use this forum to get tips and advice (see my other posts) on raising/feeding him, so I use this forum for that. I have no intrest in starting a debate or defaming any breed. This is the situation, as is. I do know what you mean though, German shepards are a good example, with some lines being good for show, the other for working (police, etc) As for jumping the fence, I'll elaborate, When they jumped the 5 foot fence into the neighbours yard, ran up to us, as this happened a guy from the house yelled "Get out of my f***** yard" and the bolted back to their yard, two seconds later they jumped back over and ran up to us again. The guy in the house then saw us and said how he hated them - so I don't think they were there to be fed. I have a cousin with an amstaff and he's a good dog, so take this thread at face value - I just want to know if there are any physical differences? (eg: husky and malamute, similar but different) -
*Bump?*

Today i saw two dogs jump a fence (from one house to another), it was a 5 foot wooden fence, and after they jumped it there was only a small 4 foot fence between me and the dogs. Now i wasn't sure if they were APBTs or AMSTAFFs, i would like to know, are there any physical differences between the two breeds or is it simply a case of "one was bread for showing while the other was for fighting'? (if that is the case then as far as im concerned they are essentially the same dog)

Before getting my Dogue i read a fair bit, but of course, owning one is different to reading about one. I have read that giant breeds grow until roughly 3 years old (growing taller, filling out, etc). I am wondering however at what age they have growth spurts. For example, when i first got him at 8 weeks, he seemed to grow fairly quick for a few weeks, now the growth rate has slowed slightly, so i am wondering at what age(s) will he experience growth spurts? (thats a little repetitive, but im sure you get the point)

I got my pup about 3 months ago (8 weeks old) and went through the same thing. I left my dog in the garage (converted to a room) and he cried for about a week. Believe it or nit they will get over it. I didn't think it would happen but it did. He's now 5 and a half months and puts himself to bed when he's tired.
-
I want to look at a tablet or an injection of some sort, as these shampoos and spot-on liquids only work for a week max.

I currently have a 5 month old dog who has fleas. I have tried several things such as the spot-on liquids that go on their skin and fidos flea shampoo. I'm wondering is there a more effective method to getting rid of fleas, is there any tablets or an injection that I can give him? Of course I wash all bedding etc after treating him. Ps: keeping him inside is not an option, he is an "outside dog"

Thanks for the replies. It has been just short of a week on the RC and he seems to be doing alright. I have noticed that his adult teeth are comming in and that may very well be the reason that he has not been as keen (I have noticed he has been trying to swallow his chicken necks whole rather than crunching them up, which may very well proove that it is a result of his teeth - of course I have been breaking the bones up to compensate for this). On a side note, the reason I have been so concerned regarding his eating is because I don't want him to be undernourished and therefore not grow into his full size (wether this is a real risk I'm not sure). As for the Royal Canin itself, I think he's enjoying it much more than the Eukanuba. Just by touching it, it feels much oiler than the Eukanuba, not to mention smelling a lot "meatier"

I have a 5 month old (mastiff) who seems to have off-days when it comes to eating. I have recently started trying Royal Canin (used to use Eukanuba), but today for example, he hasnt seemed to really have had an appetite. He has done this before a few times. I dont want to say that he doesnt like the food because last night he ate a heap of it. Is it normal for dogs/pups to have off-days in terms of eating?
-
I have just tried out Royal Canin and i can say it has gone down much better than the Eukanuba ever did. From day dot the dog never really took to the Euk, however he seems to actually like the RC (i hope i dont jinx it). Although he is a mastiff puppy, i did have to feed him the Large puppy mix (in lieu of the Giant puppy mix), as this was all i could find (in a rush). I have made another topic here where i am asking people to post locations that they know RC Giant Puppy Mix is sold. Thanks for the help.
-
Thanks for the locations guys. I went to Pet 2000 in Wetherill Park today, but they told me they need to order it in (could be in buy Friday). I opted to buy the Large Breed mix for today instead (which after reading the RC website, im not sure if there is actually a great difference between Large and Giant mixes, as they both cater for the joints and digestion). Anyway, i gave the young mastiff a service of RC tonight and he ate a really good helping, much more than he would if it was Eukanuba. Please feel free to add more potential distributors, the more options the better.

Hi there as some of you may know I am on a mission to find a dry puppy mix that my MASTIFF breed likes. I have opted to give Royal Canin a try but cannot find anywhere in Sydney that stocks the giant breed puppy mix (granted I only looked in one place). For the time being I have gotten him (5 months old) a bag for large breed puppys which I'm guessing is similar but ideally I'd like the giant breed if I can find it. If anyone can help me out it would be appreciated. FYI, I am located in the Fairfield or blacktown/kings Langley area.

I'll have to side with SBT123 with this. The fact is I have been feeding the dog Eukanuba since I got him (8 weeks old) and he's never really been keen on eating it. I've tried "lacing" it but still not really keen (even added chicken mince). I figure I have to give somthing else a try. On a side note, when he saw another dogs dry food he ate it up, it was a different brand, not sure what though.
-
Could someone tell me how much I am looking at for the different bag sizes of Royal Canin? (keeping in mind I need the giant breed bags)
-
Alright thanks for that. I have been feeding him Eukanuba as it is good for him, however I think I will give the Royal Canin a go. The reason I am hesitant in switching however is because I can't imagine it tasting any different - all dry food would taste the same wouldn't it?
-
I am currently feeding my 5 month old Mastiff Eukanuba dry puppy mix for large breeds and raw chicken. I have however found that several people add gravy to the mix (probably making the dry mix more appetising), and getting away with it without any negetive effects. So, I am wondering is it safe to add some gravy to the dry mix, to enhance the taste?

Hello, apologies for the delay in reply, nevertheless I do appreciate your feedback, all opinions have been noted. Firstly, with regards to what I feed my dog, I am currently giving him Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Mix, he doesnt seem overly keen on this (thats why i want to use some chicken stock). The reason however, that I am hesitant of switching is: 1. I know that while this Eukanuba may not be exactly what he likes, it is good for him. 2. I am not aware of the other 'good' products on the market. There are literally hundreds of products, and as soon as i hear that a particular one is good from one person, another tells me its no good. If someone can suggest any good alternatives, it would be appreciated (fyi; I am most likely going to try the Royal Canin next, see if he takes to that) Secondly, to clear things up, I do not intend to soak the Eukanuba in the chicken stock (I have also heard this removes any nutrients the dry mix has), but simply spray a mist over it, to give it a taste (no idea if that will actually work though). Originally, I was mainly concerned that the chicken stock would contain things that arnt the best for dogs, thats why I ran it by the forum first.

I have been endlessly trying to come up with ways to get my 4 month old dog to eat his dry food. He is more than happy to eat raw chicken (necks, frames, wings, etc), but when it comes to the dry food, hes not so keen. I do however understand that it is important for him to eat this dry mix, as it contains other constituents that may be lacking in the raw meat (I liken it to a kid not wanting to eat their vegetables). Anyway, typically, while i prepare his meals, i usually leave the raw chicken out for it to thaw (just enough for me to start separating it - too hard while its frozen). While it thaws it sits on top of the dry mix, this in turn gets the juices to melt onto the dry mix, and once its feeding time, he is actually more likely to eat his dry food (after he has eaten the three or so chicken necks/wings). The problem is however, when i get a chance to start splitting the chicken up (after its thawed) i generally split up enough for a few days, which creates a problem, it eliminates the need for me to thaw any chicken out over the dry food, forcing me to give him three chicken necks/wings with dry food (without anything being thawed over it). Because of this, he very commonly turns his nose up at it. My suggestion is, would it be safe (in terms of ingredients) to mix some chicken stock with water and spray it lightly over the dry food, just enough to make it appetizing to the dog? I hope this makes some sort of sense. Thanks.

Hi, I have read the majority of posts here and like most I think the dog should be checked in terms of health and conformity to the standard. However I also can appreciated your question, you would like to know of places where your dog can get exposure to breeders of your particular type of dog. There are: * Showrings * Agility Comps I would also like to know some places, are there any legitimate places to get exposure (there are certain sites you can advertise on, but the legitimacy may be lacking) if anyone else can list some things, it would be appreciated.

(posted elsewhere, posted here for some more exposure) Hi there, I have been doing some reading on these forums, with regards to how much i should feed my mastiff, and after tonight's (slight scare) i'd like to get other peoples opinions. I am feeding my 15 week old mastiff Eukanuba Dry Puppy Mix (Large Breed), now if i go by the back of the bag it directs me to feed the young bloke (currently approx. 15kg) 4 - 5.5 cups a day, however, i was reading that some of you feed you ADULT males 6 cups a day. Earlier tonight, i gave my mastiff two cups of dry mix with 4 or so chicken necks (too much?), after eating it, he started doing some loud sucking of air, he wasnt dry-reaching, but it sounded like loud snorting, wasnt sure what the heck it was. This is why i'd really appreciate some advice on how much, or an indication of how much i should feed him, while his weight is not excessive (according to the vet), i dont want him to have any gastro-intestinal problems . . .
