  1. Thanks your dog sounds divine. I have had so many hits and near misses with this dog that I am a bit over it all but I am sure that in different circumstances he would be a lovely dog. He does have endearing habits like head on the knee and singing to me and playfulness but sadly his bad habits outweigh these in my opninion.
  2. As said earlier the are not the dog for everyone, but to me all the things that make them the dog they are is what I love about them. If you ever get the chance read some of the Iditarod stories, or even about the serum run you should. People rely on the independent nature of these dogs and their ability to give all they have. Sometimes their life may depend on it. I think knowing the background of any breed makes you understand the behaviour a little better. I feel ashamed of myself now! Sorry all you Sibe lovers. It is obvious that he is in the wrong place and that he would be perfectly fine if he was with people who could take him sledding and had those " massive runs" you have mentioned. Just wondering (and then I will finish whinging!) do you think he will know his owner when he comes home? because I look forward to witnessing the reunion if he does. I wonder because we looked after our son's beloved cattle dog when he was away o/s for 12 months and although she waited out on the driveway for months for him she did not seem to recognise him when he returned.( Yes we kept her!)
  3. I wouldn't own any other breed. I have also seen some very headstrong Labs. Please, please don't think I am dishing it out on these dogs I am perplexed as to why people would chose this sort of dog.I normally love and adore dogs that is why I said I would care for this one and i am proud of myself in a weird sort of way that i have almost survived it! I know how some dogs appeal to some people and not others just wondering what all you "sibes" people get out of it. I should have tried to put him in a harness but I am not that young fit or strong . Please don't be insulted - obviously I am just one of those people who do not want a high maintenance dog. Thankyou Silverhaze for your understanding comments I do assure you that we are kind to the dog and do our best to keep him happy

  5. I absolutely agree! He is completely the wrong sort of dog.I live on very large acreage so would like be able to take him for a run with my other dogs but I am too scared to as I know it will take me two hours to catch him. It is a vicious cycle, he is penned up so he need to run and he probably runs because he is penned up.It is a very large pen with trees and shade but still I hate leaving him in it. It is either that or the house where I have to watch his every move. He is completely obedient when he choses to be but you have heard that one before, I know. I have one more month of the most stressful five months of my life trying to keep this much loved dog ( by his owners) alive until they return! Why can't you take the dog for a run on lead? Or as suggest above, put the dog in harness. and try your hand at sledding. You need to take the dog out of the pen and take him on walks. It's not fair to leave the dog penned for a month without adequate exercise and stimulation. I assure you my husband and I take him for walks on lead take him down the river allow him to swim in our swimming pool play constantly with him we do not leave him alone, my husband takes him on the tractor, in the truck we do our very best to entertain and stimulate him, he is always in our house it is the fact that we can never relax with him, never just walk out the door without checking where he is. It is like having the worst delinquent child to look after.

  7. Hi I am really wondering why anyone would want a siberian husky. I am caring for a male dog while it's family is overseas and I cannot imagine why anyone would want this sort of dog. Apart from all the faults which are well documented, this dog has only three things going for him, he is very handsome he has a cute "singing voice' and he is playful at times ( which too often turns into aggression) Otherwise how is he any different to any other clever dog? Why not get a dog which DOESN'T have to completely contained at all times. This clever superenergetic creature must always be confined - is that any life for a dog - never to go for a lovely long run, always being penned, chained, cooped up? I feel so sorry for him and yet he is such a nightmare I have no choice. I can understand anyone owning a labrador, a cattle dog, even a bichon frise but a husky? I am not trying to be contentious or rude. I am serious.
  8. Thanks, did the cortisone cream help? Did you have to use it for long periods? Our son has another brother to my dogs and he does not have it. Does change of diet help? Thanks for replying
  9. My four year old labs seem quite healthy but they have a condition where their noses continually peel. The vet says it is a genetic disorder a bit like lupus. Does anyone have any idea about this condition and , despite being told this is something which I can only alleviate, I thought I might try a homemade dog food diet and would like some recipes/ ideas etc Thanks!
