I mentioned to my vet that my pup does this, he started around 8 months and they think its some kind of allergy. especially since he kind of paws his nose and face as well. He's been inside for a couple of weeks and it's stopped. So i think it's likely your pup has an allergy, have you noticed any other behaviours?

I always wondered how costs could reach $9000 in one year so i got the budget dog plan with petplan. Anyway i realise now that it really is possible to go over that but i think its uncommon? Not really sure since this is only the second dog i've had. Anyway he was diagnosed with cancer and the surgery and vet bills have come to around $3000 and the chemotherapy will cost about $6000 all up. So i was starting to think that paying something like an extra hundred per year is probably worth it for the higher cover since its not really that noticeable paying that little bit more, but having to pay a couple of thousand at once is really difficult. ETA: should probably mention I live in the city and vet prices here are much higher than anywhere else, so maybe $8000 would be sufficient if your vet doesn't charge exorbitant prices

Ohh ok its nice to know dogs don't have the same side effects as people do.. never really noticed that dogs whov had chemo don't lose their fur.. I will talk to the vet a bit more and i've gotten some contacts from other dolers about some alternative treatments. And persephone somehow i never took notice of that forum.. i think maybe i thought i wouldn't be reading that for a long time. completely forgot it existed! thanks.

Yep it is oliver, and yeah he is only a pup.. vet said it was very unusual to see cancer in a dog his age. Bully your girl must have had a real zest for life since she lived so much longer than they thought. Just hope the same will happen for ollie. And puppy sniffer i'm so sorry to hear that but sounds like she has a great life. Ollie loves going out and home is not as interesting to him because he's an only dog and i refuse to play fight with him lol. and i definitely need more videos! i need one of him playing because he always looks so happy and the photos just don't capture that. Thanks for the advice everyone... don't know where i'd go if it werent for the forums because i don't know many people who love their dogs as much as everyone here

Yeah i might go and get a second opinion but the thing is that most of the tests that have confirmed the cancer were done on the eye that was taken out. And that eye has been sliced and stained so if i were to get a second opinion not sure what theyd look at.. maybe his blood? or do a scan or something.. but my vet said that is quite costly because theyd need to use anaesthetic. The vet suggested that if we decide on chemo then we should start treatment without staging the cancer because they said treatment will be pretty much the same regardless of results. i talked to the vet today and they said the stains show he has t-cell lymphoma and apparently that doesn't respond as well to chemo when compared to b-cell lymphoma. And since he is such an unusual case because of his age they don't what's likely to happen because there are really no statistics out there. but they said that for this type of cancer, chemo usually allows dogs to live for up to 12 months after diagnosis and yeah i've been thinking about the effects of chemo... my dad had cancer and he said it was the chemo that almost killed him because he couldnt eat and he felt sick all the time because of it. the vet also said its different for dogs because people at least know the chemo is helping them but for dogs they don't know what it is that's making them sick so its distressing for them. still thinking about what to do... 12 months sounds really appealing but then again 1 good month is better than 12 months of pain? and the vet said that if we decide against chemo then steroids would help him and he'd be pretty comfortable for the rest of his life but then he wont live as long as if he was treated with chemo

Thanks for the replies. love the ideas ive been taking lots of photos but forgot about paw prints! i think there was someone who makes paw prints into jewellery or something? does anyone know where i could get that done? and yep he is being spoilt. he gets to sleep on the bed at night and he hogs the whole thing... im always right up against the wall and hes sprawled smack bang in the middle of the bed. i love the idea of taking him somewhere with his doggy pals where they can go sniffing and chasing.. might try and organise that because i think the things he likes best are playin with his mates and running around investigating everything. dancinbcs - i've heard good things about chinese medicine so might give it a go. could u post/pm the contacts please ? and dustangel - hahah u have no idea how many photos iv tried taking of him and me together but he wont pose for me.

My dog recently got diagnosed with cancer and i'm not sure how long i have with him while hes healthy. I want to make the rest of his life as fun and as happy as possible. Right now he is still active and fit so I want to take advantage of this and let him do all the things a dog should do. Since the weather is warming up I'm thinking of taking him to the beach as he's never been I also wanted to go camping but not sure how I'd do that but if it doesnt work out then i'll just camp in the backyard or something with him What would you do with your dog if you knew you had limited time?? I'm interested to know and i'd love some ideas Sorry if anything similar has been done before but couldn't find anything when i searched.

Hey yeah the past few weeks have been hell. Ollies eye had to come out and i was feeling really terrible about that but then the biopsy came back for the eye and it turns out it was a tumour that caused the glaucoma. So they suggested immunohistochemistry staining on that eye and the results came back two days ago and they said it was lymphoma. They said they've only seen a few cases like this so far and that it is really rare for this to happen in a dog as young as him (10 months). Right now i really don't know what to do because i love my pup he means everything to me.. but the cost is just way too much... iv spent $2500 on the eye and theyve quoted the chemo at about $6000 and i'm already in debt. Then if the chemo doesnt work or if he relapses then it would all be for nothing. I really don't know what to do. I was determined to save him before i found out the cost because i hate to think that i'm not saving him because of money. but i just don't know where id get the money because i study full time and work casually.. I'm going to talk to one of the vets tomorrow and hopefully will decide by then because i think if i'm going to treat it then the sooner the better.

Thanks I feel much better now. he has to go back to the ophthalmologist on monday anyway so im glad i didnt have to take him there for no reason since its so damn far. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated and labrat i have no idea if they had to cut the eyelid. i realised that i never asked so i dno how it will stay sealed up after the stitches are out. gonna ask the vet next time. anyway i hope it heals up as well as your dogs leg did so that he can have a nice wink for the rest of his life.
-
I have a dog with one eye. But it only happened recently so can't give you much advice. Although when i asked the vet ophthalmologist how he would be affected they said that not much would change and since he is young he probably will live a very normal life. he doesn't get startled by anything on his blind side i think it may be because he relies a lot on his smell and hearing in addition to seeing.

I wanted a blue ACD ! after reading a book called Spud which was about an ACD that lived on a farm. something like that. I was obsessed. Anyway, now that i'm older not sure if i would get one because iv got a huge list of breeds that id like to own someday.

Did You Buy Your Puppy From A Less Than Reputable "breeder"?
waffle replied to PoppyDog's topic in General Dog Discussion
I got my boy from a BYB and wouldn't do it again. I read up about dogs as much as i could and i used to read a lot from the burkes backyard site, not sure why. i think i liked the pet road tests that they did. Anyway they said that x breeds were healthier and I could kind of see what they were getting at so i was just looking at ads and came across a cav x breeder. she said she bred crosses because purebred cavs have a lot of health issues and the crosses were less likely to develop diseases like MVD. She has actually been really supportive because my boy has allergies and recently lost an eye due to glaucoma and she refunded the purchase price. Anyway i had no idea that i hadn't gotten him from a reputable breeder until i came across dol. I remember my vet asking where i got him from and i proudly said i got him from a breeder . -
When I picked him up i thought that it looked a bit jagged but now it seems to be sticking out a bit more? I didn't think much of it at first because they checked him over before he was discharged. I've uploaded another photo. I would upload more in the post but can't seem to upload more than one without going over the limit =/

My dog recently got his eye removed and so they stitched up his eye. Anyway right now it looks like there is a flap of skin that is not stitched up properly. Is this something to worry about and should i take him back to the vet? Not sure what to do but will probably call up the vet tomorrow anyway. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks yeah I feel a bit better, pretty sure he will cope well because the ophthalmologist asked me if he could get up and down the stairs the morning of the consult and i said yes and he said he was probably blind then and if he could do that then he probably will adjust very easily. and yep will make sure i ask for painkillers and the essence sounds like a great idea, i think it will calm him. im seeing him today and maybe he will be discharged but not sure yet. right now im just thinking about how i should protect the other eye.. was thinking of buying doggles or something. ahah i don't know if he'd wear them but right now i just want to make sure that eye stays normal.
-
Hey. Just an update. Went to the ophthalmologist today and they said the problem wasn't dry eye and the vets were probably wrong about that and the low score on the schirmer was probably due to something else. turns out he has glaucoma and the pressure in his eye is really high and the retina is detached. not sure what could have caused it since he is young and his other eye looks normal and doesn't look like glaucoma is likely to develop in it. im really upset right now because he's going to have to get the eye removed and i tried so hard to save it. hes staying overnight at the hospital and is going to be operated on tomorrow.
-
well i noticed that his eyes were red before there was an ulcer. the first time i went into the vet the eye was pretty normal but was red. the vet looked for scratches ulcers and foreign objects and found nothing but didn't suspect dry eye. they only tested for dry eye on the third visit and said that it's quite hard to spot until something happens like inflammation. he got about a 9 on the schirmer tear test so that may be why there were no obvious signs and i missed it. i hadn't heard about dry eye until now and have never seen dirt on his eyes but then again his eyes are quite dark so i may have just missed it.
-
Yeah atm ollie is needing a lot of medication but hopefully we can cut down later. right now he's on optimmune, an antibiotic, and hes given viscotears every 2 hours. on top of that hes on tramadol for pain relief. hes getting better already and we're going to see an ophthalmologist soon. i think mark bilson? i've heard good things about him so looking forward to it.

I was given tricin and the second time i went back they said that the eye was improving but then it went cloudy white a few days after so I got worried and went back. Yeah i know i shouldnt blame the vet they were quite thorough but i was just upset that its come to this since I did everything i could to treat it. Anyway i'm pretty sure it's my fault as i bought him from a byb as i didn't know any better before. i guess sometimes you gotta learn things the hard way.
-
Hey dont know if anyones interested but turns out he has dry eye and his cornea is inflamed and ulcerated and so he might become partially blind. kindv annoyed the vets didnt find it on the previous visits so that damage couldv been prevented but maybe im asking for a bit too much.

Hey thanks for the ideas. He's 10 months old and hes a cav x. This is the first time anything like this has happened. Don't think he's squinting from light i think its more soreness or something? Not sure.
-
I woke up this morning and noticed my dog was squinting his right eye. it's also a little red and looks like its sore but havent noticed any abnormal discharge. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I took him to the vet today and they looked for scratches and foreign objects but found nothing so they just gave me some eye ointment and painkillers. Going in on monday again because vet wants to check if its getting better or worse and was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what it might be so that maybe I can offer the vet some suggestions since I have no idea how it happened. Thanks in advance

you can't judge the paper from what is written about it in the media. if you read the paper it says that the correlation has been found in other species. the paper is just testing that theory in dogs and there seems to be evidence for it. and when it says docile dogs it means dogs that are highly trainable and not aggressive (a previous study found that trainability is inversely proportional to boldness) which is kind of a questionable criterion but i guess they didn't have much to work with. and they hardly talk about it in terms of shy, docile or bold. in the paper they are studying activity levels, aggressiveness and trainability. if u think about it in those terms then you can see why there would be a correlation (less fights, less likely to run onto the road etc.) not an AMAZING paper but i wouldnt be so quick to judge seeing as most people only have anecdotal 'evidence' whereas this guy has at least tried find out in a systematic way whether there is a correlation. hes linked it to other studies which shows his results are somewhat supported.

Not a breeder, but i think it would be a great idea for more breeders to advertise on trading post etc. If you mention health testing i think that would help a lot. There are a lot of people out there who love dogs and would give them great homes but have just been misled to believe xbreeds will have less health problems. Putting ads on trading post emphasizing the pros would really help educate puppy buyers.

Oh i read something about this too! found the link there are a couple more photos in this article.
