  1. Where's the evidence that she was frail Puggerup? No evidence, but I dare say the way her arm was severed almost off and she was dragged around her house all in 2 minutes, she wasn't staunch. I'd say you've underestimated the damage a dog attack can do to any person. Once you are on the ground, the advantage lies well and truly with the dog. All you can do for the most part is endure.. fighting back makes it worse. A motivated police dog can take down a grown man without trouble. Well perhaps then, we should be allowed to have lions and bears as pets like in Texas
  2. Oh sorry, it was rude, I didn't intend to be though
  3. I'm not offended, it would be ridiculous for you to get Pug because they aren't suitable for you. You have to at least be attracted to the breed to get one. I am attracted to the look of Staffies, but I know I couldn't handle one. How well do you know your dogs and the breed? Did you get them because you like boofheads, or did you educate yourself on the breed and learn what it takes to own one and handle them so you and everyone are safe? If so, then you have done the right thing.. the majority of the population, are not like you. DOL members are dedicated to dogs and their breeds, normal people have no idea and they are the ones who also own PB's.
  4. Where's the evidence that she was frail Puggerup? No evidence, but I dare say the way her arm was severed almost off and she was dragged around her house all in 2 minutes, she wasn't staunch. That's also crap.. people who are fit, strong and dedicated to their chosen breed will know exactly how to behave around their dog and how to treat him/her. Not any Jo Blow should own a large strong breed such as a Pit Bull.. there needs to be criteria.. and having enough brains to learn everything about the breed and contain the dog and to make sure the dog is not a threat to the community it paramount.. yet I am not always seeing that. An example to show it's not me just saying everyone should have a small breed: Not everyone would handle a snoring, farting, Pug who needs to be indoors the majority of the time and needs to be fuffed over in extreme Weather (extreme for then is anything over 28 degree's ). It would be ridiculous getting a pug if you don't want an indoor dog or dog fur all over your pretty black Gucci dress. It's goes across the board, know your breed and make sure you are suitably matched. Don't choose a breed because it looks tuff and because in Australia guns are illegal to carry so a PB is second best for protective weapons. *disclaimer* not everyone (especially not at DOL) get's a PB because they are tuff and make good guard dogs.. but not many people who own them are members of DOL either.
  5. That's taken out of context. The fact is EVERY breed has the potential to become aggressive, but if you can't handle a large breed when it goes off it's clacker, then get a pug. Seriously, if a pug decided it wanted to rip my face off, I would be able handle myself.. I'd just stand up and he wouldn't reach. A stronger person who has trained in handling large dogs would do better in an argument with a large breed than me.... heck I can't even walk a dog over 15kg's. The woman attacked in this thread was a frail 67 year old woman who probably didn't even understand the breed properly. ETA- I think Amstaff's Pit bulls and another Staffies are the most stunning looking breeds around, but I'd be fecked if I ever owned one.. it would take over my house simply because I'd be too scared to argue with it.
  6. Good article Poodlefan. It talks about the size of the dog and the fact that more damage is done by a larger and more powerful animal, something which is rarely discussed. Souff *meh* Anne and I mention that all the time hence our preference for pugs
  7. Ok, most ethical breeders won't breed from aggressive dogs. That pretty much says to me, that it's a known fact that aggression is passed down. Most Pit bull breeders preferred to breed from aggressive fighting dogs, so there is a very long line of aggression in them and even though you may be able to breed the aggression out, it would take a very very long time. What's the point anyway.. all breeds can potentially be aggressive, even the ones who weren't bred from generations of killers can snap for one reason or another. The problem with the dogs on the BSL are the fact that they do so much damage when they do snap. I also believe that the reason so many PB's are involved in attacks is because every man and his dog (excuse the pun) has one.. they are a pretty popular breed especially for a banned one.
  8. sometimes. The nature vs nurture debate has been going on forever.. most conclude that both play a part, probably equal parts. There have been twin studies done, where one twin brought up by a totally different family in another country, who never met his twin brother, still shared very similar personalities and even had the same food preferences and dress sense. It's not uncommon for identical twins to marry another set of identical twins either. The biological inheritance of personality traits and disposition to aggressive behaviours are real in humans, so I have no doubt they are real in other animals also.
  9. No photo's I'm afraid.. well none from me, but there may be another member who can post some pics I'll ask tomorrow.
  10. :D all went well. He was a lovely little guy.. very smoochie and affectionate. He had a toilet stop at the airport and then jumped in the back of my car and went (reluctantly) back into his crate. A few tears by the end of the trip, but he bounced back at the vet when he got some water and another toilet break He grabs your legs for a cuddle...nawwwwww.
  11. I'd love to see people having to apply for licenses to own Am staff/Pit bulls. I don't believe in BSL that bans breeds, but I do believe the legislation should involve stringent rules and regulations when it comes to owning certain breeds. All breeds can get pissed off an attack, but breeds like these have the ability to rip your arm and face off in 2 minutes.. not a breed to be owned by just anyone IMO.
  12. I feel sick that's horrific. Must have been one pissed off powerful pooch. I'd never own anything that size, just out of respect and fear
  13. Hi Anne, I am picking him from the airport and he is coming from Lithgow pound and not quarantined. I am dropping him off at the vet for desexing, so he will be in a crate that has been supplied for the trip (not one of my own) and won't be coming home with me.
  14. Yeh St Kilda beach is pretty cool and last time I was there (around a million years ago) dogs were welcome.
  15. So many points to bring up with her. My daughter has a birthday party on the 6th of April so hopefully either I see SIL before then or she keeps the dogs separate.. that's highly unlikely though. I'm not sure about contacting the breeders either.. there's nothing they can do really and it will just upset them.
  16. Thanks tdierikx I have worded the kids up about being rowdy and excitable and I am actually trying to key up a babysitter for my 4 year old because I know he has trouble containing himself.
  17. She doesn't look like she minds at all Adorable. ♥
  18. I am so excited to be able to help out in a rescue this week. He's a Staffy (the thread is here somewhere apparently) and his name is Fonz. I will have my kids with me, and I have a Kia grand carnival with only 1 bench seat in the back where the boot would be if I laid the seat down. I am wondering how the dog will go being harnessed to a seat belt by a total stranger, or if I should crate him and put the crate in the back area instead? What do you all think would be the most comfortable for him? I am not sure how nervous rescue dogs are after a short flight :D Any tips would be great thanks
  19. You know keyboards malfunction when they get wet don't you? ;) :D
  20. I'm really sorry deelee.. I know Honey is adorable and all but I am sooo distracted by your avatar
  21. I was hoping to find ugly pups, but this is what came up http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/images11/MixDu...enRetriever.jpg If only they'd turn out like this poor fella http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg42/jt...ugliest-dog.jpg
  22. Not sure if she joined, but they gave her all the paper work etc.. who knows after that. The PB isn't pregnant yet as far as I know.. she just said they are an item and would make cute pups and neither are desexed.
  23. And if she is as irresponsible an owner as the picture you have painted and the dog does attack again, then that attack will be attributed incorrectly to an AMSTAFF, which is another nail in our coffin for being added to the BSL list, and in the state that is most actively trying to add AmStaffs to the restricted list EFS Yeh I know, I wish I had of known the full situation when I got the phone call arghhh
  24. Yeh I'll try and come from that angle too persephone. why is it that people think dogs MUST have a mate to be happy and content? I honestly believe she wants to make money off him and there will be no way she gets him desexed. The neighbours PB is an even worse situation because she shouldn't be having litters with ANY breed.
