Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)
Kelza replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
This is beautiful and well sad I am very glad to read Jane is stable, she is constantly in my thoughts throughout the day and night. I was very sad to hear the wonderful Magnus has gone. I was hoping for a happy story in this tragedy. I loved reading the link regarding Chi Chi story, what a little survivor in Jed's words “And she is the best lesson in being happy despite adversity" hopefully she will continue inspired Jed to stay strong and keep fighting. Thank you Steve for sharing the photo's RIP lil ones, may you run happy and free -
dodger39 So nice to hear you rescued Ladybug, and have enjoyed 10 years with her. You are so right the correct grooming tools makes all the difference Hope you enjoy DOL, hope to see you in here again some time

It is nice to mix it up, but I must say I am a fan of group 6 being second group on, especially as I have fluffy's more time getting them prepared and less waiting at the end

Absolutely  -
I completely agree with you Nynka. I think it is much easier & quicker to dry the dogs with a long hose. I have 2 dryers and will always choose my long hose dryer, better for me and my dogs

This update was posted by Julie in the thread in the news forum This brought tears to my eyes, absolutely so sad. It is such a big loss and my heart goes out to Jed. I am sure Jed would appreciate being able to say goodbye and visit. Has it been confirmed how many animals were lost? Is there an update on Jed condition? I wish I could do more, but I will be donating tommorrow (when I get paid) ~ My thoughts are with Jed ~

How Does One Become A Registered Breeder?
Kelza replied to jackie_a1's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think this is excellent advice. I have been lucky enough to have grown up assisting with breeding and exhibiting my Samoyeds from a young age. Getting involved and learning before jumping in is essential. A responsibile breeder to me is someone who doesn't breed for the hell out it! They take time to ensure their dogs are health checked, hip/elbow scored (larger breeds) and use dogs that are too. It is vital to understand the breed and it's history, as all responsible breeders should be breeding for the betterment of their breed. Outstanding dogs can be top show dogs and also be excellent in obedience, agility, herding etc. It is important to look at confirmation, soundness in movement and temperatment. Look at the lines, understand what is behind their dogs and ones they are considering using, talk to others understand if there are any problems that are coming from a line in particular, understand the coefficient of inbreeding etc. Knowledge is the key to successful breeding, this is gained by asking questions, researching and experiencing. I think it is imporatant to know your bitches weaknesses & strengths and put it to a dog that will assist in producing a better dog. -
Aww poor Blossom, hope she is found soon. A long time ago 2 of our Sammy's were let out of our property and they were missing for 2 months and 2 days. Long strory short, the people that found them, at first wanted to keep them, but didn't know their names etc. After two months they saw the poster a pet shop had left up in their window and decided to call us. So stay positive and hopefully she is found soon. We did find by not advertising their names helped us heaps. It is the worst feeling and I really feel for Sam ~ my thoughts are with her

Get many different people to go over your dog outside the ring. repeat the command before a person goes over your dog and heaps of praises after. It could just be a confidence thing Best of luck

Four-legged Friends Prove Priceless On Financial Front

We have been using Eucalyptus oil for ever, and the breeder we first bought our samoyed off did too (I do know of many Sammy people that do). But A Sammy's fur is a little different to a short coated breed. We use this when dry bathing, involves a slightly warm facewasher/towel with a little bit of eucalyptus oil rub all over the dog, rub a little baby powder in and brush... then you have a sparkling white Samoyed I was able to show my girl for 9 weeks using this method without putting her in the bath... and you couldn't tell the difference, she is perfectly happy and had no reaction at all. And I have ever found a flee on my dogs yet!

Thank you Snerzok for your words of wisdom, always good to have another point of view completely agree I like the advice also regard the recall and drop command. I am sure people will benefit from knowing that... Thank you for sharing (hope to see you here more

I agree Our dogs teach us a lot and we love them so much for it Wolfsong I found the question you posted and responses you gained interesting, and think anyone interested should read so they can gain a better understanding of recalls, I know I learnt a thing or two Anyone interested the pathway is Dogz Online Forums > Discussion Forums > Training / Obedience / Dog Sports > 100% Recall, Is it possible? I particularly liked the following posts: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?s=&showtopic=195084&view=findpost&p=4506219 http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?s=&showtopic=195084&view=findpost&p=4506337 even though this is talking about another breed I believe it gives some great advice http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?s=&showtopic=195084&view=findpost&p=4506830 I encourage everyone to read, because even though it isn't a Samoyed forum it is about dogs in general. Have a great day

It is the most upsetting thing deciding it is time, but it is the best decision once every resource has been explored, but of course this doesn't make it any easier. I was 9 years old the first Samoyed we had to put to sleep, I stayed in the room as did my whole family, and I can't say it was the best experience but I wanted to be there to pat my girl and say goodbye, she was faithful and I wanted her to know I was there. Since then we have had so say goodbye to our 16 1/2 year old boy "Mosco" & 15 1/2 year girl "Tika", my dad and sister could never be in the room as they were too upset, so Mum and I were the strong ones for them, crying but pating and telling them how much we loved them as they past. It is never easy saying goodbye especially when you decide, but I cherish the memories

CoNgRaTuLaTiOnS that is wonderful, may your success continue

I think everyone needs to stop taking it personally and remember this forum is not about one dog, or a breeder, but rather our beautiful breed that we all love! Icemist, I acknowledge your experience with obedience and am aware of your achievements. I am glad you have 100% recall, but my point was about pet owners and new owners that don't have the years experience in training Samoyeds. You said a young Samoyed can have 100% recall, this is somthing I don't agree with as I don't think any new owner would be able to achieve this, you however might be able to do this but you are an obedience trainer and have been for years. This is something we can agree to disagree regarding new owners. I am the first to encourage new people to get involved, ask questions and have opinions... It keeps them wanting to learn and interested in our wonderful breed. Without new people, our clubs and breeds wouldn't survive, the Sam ACT club folded and the QLD is at breaking point as there aren't new people wanting to get involved, so lets please encourage the ones that are. Bindi is new and I certainitly don't always agree with her opinions but by sharing, knowledge opinions and ideas are the only way people are going to expand their knowledge. In saying this I know Bindi speaks to many breeders and owners in Australia and overseas so even though she has only been in the breed a year she is doing her research and not taking one persons opinion as gospel. Bindi is a vet nurse who has seen many dogs hit by cars that could have been prevented. I think we need to remember to keep it about the topic and don't have personal attacks. Wolfsong I agree with you completely, and I should of been more clear in my original post (I was at work and in a rush when posting) Icemist: You have grown up in the breed like I have and we have seen many people come and go, it is important to keep the knowledge flowing, different opinions make interesting reading and gets people thinking and challenges them to do their own research and ask their breeders questions. Hopefully you will keep posting, having constructive discussions and challenging me... We love our breed, lets remember to smile like they do

Hi Icemist, I noticed you didn't respond to my post regarding temperament, but glad you have responded to this one. As you know I am involved in showing, but something you may be aware of is I have also been involved in herding and agility with my kids. No my dogs don't have obedience titles, and they still respond when I have been performing these activities. In my experience our puppy buyer do the basic obedience training, but most puppy buyers are not interested in trialing their dogs. So as this is a forum about Samoyeds and the main reason is to enlighten puppy buyers about our breed I believe it is important for them to know that they need to be fully aware Samoyeds are not always fabulous at recalls, yes they may do it 100 or 200 times, but the 201 occasion the environment could be different, their could be a smell in the air, she could be in season etc, you always need to be careful! I do love & trust my Samoyeds with everything (kids, other animals etc), but as I said I wouldn't walk the streets off lead as I do not trust that if they see a cat they would not want to run and play.... the risk of being hit by a car is too high for me, and yes you may think this is stupid but my dogs mean the world to me and I would be devastated if my dog was hit and I could have prevented it by something as simple as a lead.. If you knew my kids you would certainty see the unique bond I have with my Samoyeds especially "Shimmer", I do spend a lot of time with my kids training and if I did let them off the lead I probably wouldn't have to worry. But I won’t take the chance just to see...as their is that one time that they may not listen. I am aware you have been heavily involved in obedience and may know the correct techniques. But as you said So puppy buyers need to be aware, that even though they think they have 100% recall they may not. Bindi did experience this and she does go to obedience. I was actually out to dinner Saturday with a couple of Samoyed breeders/owners who all said they had experience one time or another were they Samoyed tuned out and ignored their recalls. These experiences involved near misses of being hit by cars. Obedience trainers thought I was stupid doing agility because of the way Samoyeds think, but my girl loves it. Anyone that says that about herding needs to read the Samoyed history... but remember these are all controlled environments away from cars. I am glad you feel your Samoyeds are perfectly trained, but just remember this forum is for puppy buyers and not everyone is interested in spending years becoming a obedience trainer.

A Samoyed is a very intelligent dog. It is very possible to train a recall in these dogs. There are a good number of Samoyeds out there with obediance and agility titles. Samoyeds are VERY intellegent and it is important to remember they can be subborn and have a mind of their own. It is important to train them from a young age, but it is also important to never trust them 100% in the early years, regardless if they have titles or training. Hopefully Bindi will share her experience on this forum. In saying this I took my girl "shimmer" to the dog beach and she wouldn't run more than 10 metres before turning back to me, but I certainly wouldn't let her off leash when an area is not fenced and she is 2years old. The reason being is if something catches a Samoyeds attention, that becomes their focus and they "cant hear you calling them back".
