  1. its taken me a while to find toys which my GSP pup can't destroy in 5 minutes but finally found some good stuff which he just loves. It the tough by nature range (good cuz ball, bad cuz, octupus etc) and they are tough enough for him! I buy them from a particular ebay store and they are a good price and she posts them to me really quick. And they have a really fun squeeking noise which he likes too.
  2. Ellz, I wasn't aware of that. So even though Hugo only had a little amount this time, are you saying that even another tiny amount on another occasion will be a problem? Is there anything that can be kept at home to administer in that event or is it always an emergency trip to the vet?
  3. I wonder if what you feed your dogs makes a difference as to if the worms like it or not? I really don't know but mine that are in the dog poo with just a few kitchen scraps are breeding prolifically at the moment, there are millions of babies in there. I wondered that too, what do you feed yours?
  4. Thanks for all your replies. The "tumbler" is now in use sitting proudly in the corner of the garden. Its got wet newspaper (thats what the instruction manual said ) and lawn clippings and a small bag of compost worms, just to see how it all goes. Time will tell. Dog hasn't obliged us with any 'presents' yet today so but I am waiting eagerly to try out the new dog loo! hmmm, if only I could train him to remove the lid and use it like a toilet!
  5. isn't is awesome when these things seem to just "click". Hugo is the same. He seems to know the difference between a wee break and the last wee break now its time for bed. Yay for Pippi, you clever doggie!
  6. Thats a good chart for any future reference (I've book marked it in case its ever needed!). I did google to find a similar thing but the problem is he ate cake and I have no idea the amounts of ingredients are in it so can't work out how much he's actually ingested.
  7. Thanks for your quick replies. I feel a bit less panicky now! He's sleeping in my room at the moment for me to keep a close eye on as he only just had to go to vets on Thursday because he gorged himself on leaves and twigs and kept vomiting. Now I find him bench surfing and finding the last piece of mud cake! Thankfully I know the sound of crockery being moved around and raced out before he'd done too much damage.
  8. My 10 month old GSP just ate about 1-2 tablespoons of mud cake (woolworths brand). Is that enough to be concerned about? He weighs 27 kgs. (I posted in heath forum but there are more people online in general so posting here too!)
  9. My 10 month old GSP who weigh 27 kgs just ate about 1 or 2 tablespoons of mud cake (woolworths brand) Is that enough to cause problems?
  10. I had read that if you add kitchen scraps in with dog poo the worm 'prefer' the scraps and therefore won't do anything to the dog poo. Maybe I will just chuck it all in with some worms and see what happens!
  11. I've done a search on composting dog waste here on DOL (and on google etc) but now I'm confused about whether I should have got a worm farm instead? I've read that if you use it for dog waste then you shouldn't put kitchen scraps in there as well which I am ok with but I want to make sure I am using the most effective method. Does anyone have a "tumbler" type compost bin for their dog poop? If so should I put worms in it? Or just dog poo and something else? or should I take it back and get a worm farm instead??????
  12. So the barium went thru ok ? That's good news! Hope all is well!! what does he have in the way of chew toys/entertainment out in the yard? Obviously the leaves etc are some way very entertaining! does he have longish grass he can chew/eat? Perhaps he would enjoy screwed up newspaper in cardboard boxes? he could rip it up ! Kongs, bones? His is a potentially dangerous occupation He is great this morning. No more vomits overnight and so far has kept down a very small breakfast of chicken and rice. He has lots of chew toys (It's taken me a while to find brands that he can't destroy in 5 minutes but now we have thats all we buy for him! LOL) and he spends the majority of his time inside with us. When he's outside on his own (if I am going out for more than half hour or so) then I leave him with a nice meaty bone which usually keeps him happy for a couple of hours. For some reason he has just always enjoyed leaves and twigs etc but this time he went silly :-( we will now be making sure that any trimmings from the trees go straight into the bin!
  13. It appears he has just over indulged in the twig and leaf eating. Tummy not sore and no sign of obstruction (thank goodness!) . He's happy and bouncing around as usual. Vet gave him a shot of antibiotic and anti nausea medication. He did a huge vomit when we got home of a mass of leaves! He is to have nothing to eat tonight and then start small frequent meals of chicken and rice from tomorrow morning. Garden has now had a huge clean out but he was still trying to get the stuff off me while I was trying to put it in the bin, naughty boy.
  14. He had another vomit in the early hours this morning. Just fluid (he didn't eat anything last night). He is still very happy and normal bouncy puppy. He had a little plain rice a while ago but now he has brought it back up again so he's off to the vets but can't get in until later this afternoon. I've cleared up the garden so no more twigs and leaves. My OH said the tree in question is a native ficus (he thinks). I've googled but the only one that comes up as toxic is weeping fig and it definately isn't one of them. I'm hoping he's just been a bit over indulgent with the twigs etc. He doesn't appear to be in any pain, can touch his tummy without problem and he seems like his normal self. Poo was normal this morning too. Is there anything I'm missing?????
  15. My GSP loves to chew on twigs, sticks etc but this evening has vomited up a lovely present on our rug! Its full of little bits of stringy twigs (plus a bit of apple (no core) from this morning). Obviously he has been a bit too indulgent in the garden and got rid of the offending vegetation. He doesn't appear to be at all unwell and he's as happy as usual, had a couple of poo's during the day, normal and no problem there. What do I do about his tea tonight and/or breakfast tomorrow morning? I've removed his dinner for the moment. do I not give him anything to eat tonight? Never had this problem before so not sure what to do.
  16. What I do find hard to understand is why people fill up their bins with plastic bags and poos when all you need do is bury it in the garden. All that plastic binned by millions of dog owners contaminating the environment is pretty scary. Even if you have several dogs and/or big dogs, it breaks down so quickly. You don't need are large yard and if you have a small yard, just dig a hole drop in the poo every day and cover with a bit of soil or leaves and put a brick over the opening so dogs can't fall in or dig in it. You would use that one hole for a long time. Think of the "long drop" toilets in National Parks. I have 5 dogs (little admittedly) and I just use a trowel and a dust pan. People with larger dogs could use something larger. to be honest I never thought of doing it that way. do you have a smelly area in the back yard? I should have put that in my post.... there is never any smell. Any smell can be dealt with though with a sprinkle of dolomite lime.
  17. seems it not just your dog thats 'special' Special to me though So I wonder why all these dogs do this. What is it that triggers them to poo when we pick up whats already down? I am pretty sure its not because he likes it being there as he refuses to go into the garden bed where we bury his 'presents' so he obviously doesn't like being near the stuff!
  18. its got to the point where I am beginning to think that I should just hold the pooper scooper under his butt so that it doesn't even hit the ground!
  19. Can someone tell me if there is a reason why my dog ALWAYS does a fresh poo when I am in the garden doing what we call in our house as "the poo patrol"....walking around the garden to pick up his lovely 'presents'! the first few times I thought it was just a fluke but I now realise that at 9+ months of age he just automatically does one when I pick them up. In fact if we are going somewhere or going for a walk and I want him to poo first I just walk around the garden with the pooper scooper and bingo, he obliges! It isn't always the same time of day either, it can be anytime. Is this common, is there a reason? Is my dog just a little 'special"??????
  20. I cant remember if its ever been mentioned before fiveplusone so please excuse me if it has but your boys colours are more pointer like than GSP Ive never seen a GSP of his colour. Is the colour/markings common in GSPs? Is he a pure GSP? Its been mentioned alot! ;) I can't say he is definately purebred but I have owned 2 GSP's before and he looks very much like my first boy (who was also black but more black than white). His face is very GSP (ie roman nose rather than the "dish"??? shape of EP). I myself have never seen colouring like it before but I was recently looking at a UK breeders website and there were lots of GSP's that had the same colouring as Hugo, even some that had a lot less black than him, one boy on this UK website was referred to has not having "normal" GSP colouring . You can't see from the photo that you have shown but he had lots of black spots/ticking on his back and legs and in fact as each month passes he gets more black spots. ETA....this is UK breeder website if you are interested. couple of very different coloured/pattern GSP's, particularly the boy name "Pilot". http://www.riverside-stud.co.uk/new_page_1.htm
  21. "Awww. Hugo was really great, lol, but *whispers* I think he's a bit of an exception when it comes to energy. He was pretty energetic while we were there, but even so, less than what I expected a GSP to be (and less than what Ive read about on here). And then when you said he just went inside and flopped down to sleep (lol), I think thats not the most common behavior He's still one of the nicest looking GSPs Ive ever seen (including the 1000s of pics ive looked at on the net). When he fills out a bit, he'll look amazing. " ....well today he is being a right pain in the $@^#! He is currently trying to make a 4x2 biscuit play with him ;) and not very succesfully I might add so he's becoming a bit agitated! After yesterday's mud episode (see pics in GSP forum) he is confined to inside or the side area (which has no lawn or mud) for toilet breaks, so he is a bit hyped up, even after his morning walk. Secretly I think he's wanting to get out in the mud but I have too much work to do right night for the clean up that would entail (unless I leave him out for a significant period of time........and he is Hugo after all so would be a big sook and want to come in once he is cold and wet ) ETA.....he is now currently under my desk trying to bite and chew my feet and slippers! Ouch!
  22. Stormie, so are some vets now recommending vaccinations only every 3 years? Are they different vaccines to the normal annual ones? is there a good website (for an average dog owner) that will give me good info as I suspect my vet will be the type that say vaccinate annually.
  23. GSP English pointer Weimaraner Great Dane Springer spaniel Field spaniel Vizsla Italian greyhound Aussie shepherd GSP (so good I had to put them twice!)
  24. Hi, could you PM the mobile vets details please!
