Are FOO's sessions over for the year now?
-
You will probaby be fine if all you want are dogs that live in the house with you, go for walks nicely on the lead and recall at the park. A lot of us have our dogs in classes with us or do more than one performance sport. If you want anything other than house dogs you WILL have problems only using the +R quarter of the quadrant. I'm not sure whether you actually would use a dog behaviour professional if you stuffed up because I have seen you express the fact that none knows learning theory as well as you do. I think you woud find if you could be more concise you may realise most people here share the same training ideals as you do, it's just that it takes too long to read paras and paras of what could be said in half the amount of words.

FWIW I think I'd sit back and watch him for a while. You've just brought a new pup into your environment who is obviously fairly used to lording it over all his other siblings. With time he will learn it doesn't work with Kivi and it doesn't work with his new humans either. But my experience tells me it's not always the best way to ignore backchatting, and other behaviours. As others have mentioned he may learn that he does in fact get the last word if he finds it self rewarding and no aversive comes of it. Would I be applying -R? Probably not...time outs yep maybe. I think if it continues closer to 'puppy licence revoking time' then you need to work out how to communicate it's unasseptable. Mel.

Let us know how you go.

Haven't heard anything bad about Carl Muller. Margaret O'Riordan practices in Northcote/Thornbury she is good as well, I believe she does acupuncture.

Preferred Premium And Super Premiums?
Staff'n'Toller replied to stormie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I know there's a following for Ziwipeak in small dog owners, but honestly I coudn't afford to feed it to my medium dogs- and that's getting it at Vet wholesaler price. The prices are crazy for it. -
There is a condition in Dals and it can get quite serious. PM The spotted devil- she is familiar with it.

Preferred Premium And Super Premiums?
Staff'n'Toller replied to stormie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My first instinct would be to say RC and Artemis. That would be dependant on two things though: 1. How easy is Artemis for you to access vs EP. 2. Are your Vets going to suggest EP duck or EP fish for dogs with allergies over say..RC Sensitivity/Hypoallergenic? If they are always going to steer clients to the prescription range of RC for food allergies that's fine, it may just be easier to stock Artemis if that were the case. -
Exercising An Adolescent Labrador
Staff'n'Toller replied to Marnifer's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If you were going to get the hips done then Pennhip will give you the most information about possible issues down the track. The scoring system is different to the AVA in what it looks at and one of the xray views is also different. There are a number of Vets in each State that have the Certification but not every Vet can do Pennhip. I applaud you for keeping an eye on her food. Nice lean dog with great muscle tone is what is going to be best for hips and elbows though, now and into old age. -
Artimas Holistic Dog Food
Staff'n'Toller replied to sandi'smum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think the Fresh Mix is as good as EP but it depends which holistic formula you are on. For instance my Staffy girl was on duck or fish EP but can't seem to tolerate the Artemis (any formula) but my other two are looking good on the Maximal Dog and have only just weaned them onto 100% Maximal. Will see how it goes. -
It's in the old square in Boronia where Safeway used to be (now Dan Murphy's or something) Get Fresh is the fruit and vegie place in the old Franklins store and the butcher is a small outlet right in the corner on the left hand side. google map

I know that Champion have bones. They have good frames too. Before the shop was sold, I asked the previous owner if she buys the meat in frozen b/c I didn't want to refreeze it and she looked at me in horror "absolutely not we buy it all in fresh!!!" She still works there part time. I'm pretty sure the Get Fresh butchers have venison too.....I really must get there sometime.
-
LP try the butcher attached to Get Fresh in Boronia, they have a great range of pork and other interesting off cuts. I haven't been there lately so can't comment on prices but worth a look. Champion Pet Foods in Bayswater has been bought by a Labrador breeder and she feeds barf so I can't imagine she'd stock any crap.

You can try Advocate but it ideally needs to be fortnightly, the derm Vets have reported treatment failures on it so it's no longer treatment of choice for demodex or sarcoptes. The rep seemed to mutter something about it being good for maintenance but not in initial treatment which really translates to 'once they're all dead it will keep it away'. We use a fair bit of dectomax for the dogs we treat in an indigenous community and they are far more immuno compromised due to other parasites and previously malnutrition- no deaths so far. I agree about boosting the immune system, but something like a powdered supplement from Carole Bryant (Berigora Farm) might be more beneficial. If it were my dog I'd be knocking it on the head personally, have seen demodex treated by other Vets in the past and it gets to uncontrolled stage quickly in some dogs.

Is There A Natural Alternative To The Dry I/d Diet?
Staff'n'Toller replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Royal Canin have 3 types close to the I/d. Intestinal (high fat) but good if you have a dog hard to keep weight on. Hypoallergenic (much lower fat) good for some skin conditions and IBD. Sensitivity Control (lower fat) novel protein source for skin and IBD etc. Blue Whiting is the protein and Tapioca is the carbohydrate. My Stafford does really well on the Sensitivity and it is highly palatable. -
I Think I've Missed Something Here...
Staff'n'Toller replied to persephone's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
'Pass the Puppy' used to be a norm at puppy schools, but it's not advised now due to safety reasons for the other dogs. Bad experiences can happen from being handled by very novice owners. -
It's not a months worth. Your dogs always have dimmitrol in their systems, so not sure what the difference is there. Missing and restarting daily tabs without testing is a lot more dangerous than missing a few weeks or a month of milbemycin.
-
We've had a few (clients) dogs who won't eat Drontal chews so I was hoping they weren't going to be like that. My dogs weren't that fond of the Sentinel tabs but they ate them regardless, the chews are a bit more popular. It's very hard now though, for those dogs that won't eat any chews, or have severe allergies - only options are Proheart Tabs or Milbemax Tabs.
-
Yep, bizarro...little dogs do little poo. We would only recommend a small amount of bran if major anal gland issues. :p
-
Same medication if that's what you're asking. They're chicken flavoured, all mine were happy to take them.
-
Jean Dodds says no less than 4 weeks between Vaccinations, with the last Vaccination no earlier than 14 weeks. <-- I'm pretty sure on that but someone might correct me there. So 9 and 14 weeks, or in the case of an earlier Vacc 6,10,16 weeks. Most Vets will say 7-10 days for full immunity, the immune response starts at 4 days though, so at 5 days I'd be happy to take mine out. That is only my opinion.
-
Yup she should get it removed with large margins as soon as possible and once it's been tested by the Lab they can stage it. 1, 2 or 3. Depending on the Stage there are various testing and treatment options available to her.

Pain And Pain Relief
Staff'n'Toller replied to poodle proud's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We give routine pain relief for dentals with extractions. Specialists even advise that nerve blocks are not difficult and can make post-op recovery nicer for the dog. Although it's not something we've adopted yet. We actually will give a small dose to small breeds who've had a scale and polish only because they tend to take it very personally. They go home happier for it. We will send dogs home with 3-4 rimadyl tabs but having had personal experience with wisdom teeth removal in the chair the first 24hrs (the bone pain) is the worst then you're usually aok. -
Making Agility Jumps From Pvc Piping

I've made mine like that link but bought the jump cups from clean run.
