Search And Rescue - Dog Training
Staff'n'Toller replied to Tilly's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Do you have any groups training in Vic Sardog? I used to do mantrailing (for fun) and I LOVED it...my old dog has gone to the bridge now, but I have another one here who is great at it. Mel. -

Monthly Heartworm Preventative For Small Dog
Staff'n'Toller replied to koalablue's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It's hard to get a singular treatment these days. If you find Heartgard chews too big, Interceptor might be a better option and yes it does do intestinal worms monthly but you are going to have to do that anyway... Probably the one that suits you most is Milbemax because you could dose with 1-2 small dog tabs depending on weight and they are teeny-tiny so easy to hide. Or Proheart tablets- they do heartworm only. -
Totally agree with piper I would train it first. I would probably get a mask as well, I think you would have to go with a paediatric one because an animal mask has a round attachment but the spacer outlet is oval... It could work very well though generally speaking.

When people are talking about the goats milk soap do you mean Moo Goo??

Mast Cell Tumour Without Chemo Treatment

Clean or dirty margins? I know a few dogs who've not had chemo and are still fine, some who've had other small ones removed but others who haven't had a recurrance. -

I am in the middle of watching the 2 x 2 DVD - WOW! is all I will say! May give it a try with the next dog. Certainly has prompted me to do more work with a smaller number of poles to proof entries etc. If you've got a dog who can deal with shaping you can retrain using that method. -
I used to have the same problem working at another club, only mostly our beef was with the soccer club that insisted on bringing out their couch- yes couch! And also encroach on our space about an hour earlier than was allowable. We used cones but of course it didn't stop other dogs coming into the class. Greytmate's idea is a good one, sometimes we would pick up new clients like that too! I was going to suggest the hazard fencing it would fix your problem. I bought stakes from bunnings made of recycled plastic and the hazard fencing is a bit exy but a once off investment, it seems to be hard wearing as flyball clubs use theirs over and over. ETA: Don't be afraid to be more forceful either - I am happy to say I PAY X AMOUNT EACH YEAR FOR THE USE OF THIS AREA, PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOG AWAY!

I am looking at the moment too, I have to make a decision by next week. I read, and please correct me if I'm wrong that medibank won't continue covering the same condition into the next policy period once the maximum has been reached. So if it's a chronic condition of say the liver or kidneys or heart, you may not be able to claim into the next year. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with PIA due to this.

Once a month seems to be the more popular way, but you can do it as weekly round of 4 whenever you think you need it if you prefer.

Chiropractic, Bowen Or Acupuncture Therapy?
Staff'n'Toller replied to raffikki's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use Chiro for my dogs semi regularly but I have also used Cranio-Sacral therapy for my girl who had surgery for cancer. The lady treating her could identify muscle memory from her knee surgery many years earlier and released all those muscles for her. I spoke to my boss very briefly about it and he agrees there is often a muscle memory left after big surgery so whether Bowen or Cranio-Sacral I believe it's a good idea to put all the muscles back in their correct positions- as such. -
Their site is giving me a malware warning but it's Caulfield Racecourse (parking on site, costs) Fri/Sat/Sun 10-4 or 10-5pm.

I know of a Labrador who ate probably, 2kgs of blood and bone or similar. It's not usually the main ingredient but the other chemicals they put into it. Anyway, short story is it had a sore stomach and off it's food the night of eating it - 2 days later - dead. This was after 1.5 days at the emergency centre on fluids, it got constipated from the fertiliser and that caused haemorraghic gastro, which, by the next day the dog was going very fast downhill, also I think it's kidney values were haywire. If you can get a hose on fertiliser that would be better...but I just don't use them.

Hehehe, I got the new chews and was miffed at no stickers, too. I had to grow up a little and actually write on my calendar BTW, does anyone else find the packaging huge and hard to open? I'm not sure why there are no stickers I will ask the rep next time I see her. The packaging is huge and is going to be refined. The foil is hard to open because they had to make it child proof due to the law. Don't worry I was just as frustrated with my first few packs until I complained to the rep....more embarrassing when you are complaining straight to the company then you get that answer.

Great I'm glad the flyball is still on, I thought it was a big mistake when they decided not to do championship shows so glad to see they are back on this year too.

Wtf??!! You have to wonder who organises it.

I think if the owner is in agreement then yes, I'm pretty sure your son would get seen much sooner and possibly get a higher level of care. I'm always telling my boss if I ever cut myself badly enough to need stitches I'm NOT going to the hospital I am coming down to see him, he does better stitching than any human doctor I've seen.

Specialists don't treat off the bat with cortisone otherwise they can't tell how good any of the other treatments are since cortisone masks it. If a Derm Vet thinks it's allergy in origin you are given an elimination diet (by agreement) and a time is made for sedation and allergy testing. If he shows positive for allergies then it's straight to desensitisation injections (I'm making a gross generalisation here) that's basically how it goes. I don't know, obviously, the myriad of symptoms and causes you have discussed with the naturopath and exactly how long you have been treating it but I strongly feel that you need to make a firm date about when enough's enough. I can see where you're coming from but I think perhaps your apprehension is a bit unreasonable and once you get there you'll realise that consultation with Specialists is a team approach. People wouldn't talk about how much they adore Charles Kuntz on here if it wasn't! With cancer care in dogs and other ailments it can be hit and miss and weighing up quality of life but when the gold standard allergy treatment for humans is also available to dogs -and very successfull for the most part- I would be going for it.

On The Effective Use Of Punishment
Staff'n'Toller replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It's about seeing the unwanted behaviour diminish, not "behaviour" in general. Unless you're saying that even though you don't reward them, they continue to give the wrong behaviour (time after time; session after session). But somehow, I don't think that's what you're saying. I think Diva means drive, not a specific behaviour. -
Obedience Troubleshooting
Staff'n'Toller replied to Ptolomy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'm just putting this bit in too because it's the part I remember and I think it's quite important: Don't EVER call a dog off that is running out to a glove ! He thinks he's right. Go back and help him get it right. Set him up for success. -
