  1. It may be just stingy, I would probably continue to give the tablets and try again with the cream tomorrow or the next day when it has settled down somewhat. If he is still trying to get to it even with the collar on the edges of the collar will make it bleed so guess what- 24 hr supervision until sutures are out, make sure you interupt him if he's still trying to lick with the collar on. Sutures will now most likely have to stay in longer now that he has licked himself a lovely infection....
  2. Dog's name 'Microchipped' home phone mobile vet name and number on the back. I buy mine in brass with paint filled engraving, and I buy them big enough that the average human can see it. I always have microchipped engraved on it as I want to hopefully appeal to a persons good sense and have them take the dog in to be scanned. There's no guarantees with that of course, but one can hope!
  3. It also pays to remember that Guide Dogs have been breeding their own lines for temperament, for decades now. They only breed from the dogs according to their needs. Many Labs from registered breeders have field dogs in their not-so-distant family lines. You really need to do your research and choose a pup from a sire and dam that you absolutely love before you jump in.
  4. I'm not flaming, but I disagree, the good trainers who invest in their own education and do a great job should be paid accordingly. I can't think of many other professional fields where there is such a large contingent of adults giving of their time for nothing- it's great- but they deserve to be paid. People value what they pay for. If I need someone to teach me how to play the guitar- I expect that I will be paying $30/hr or whatever the going rate is. So it should be in Dog Training because it's adult education when it really boils down to it. The number one question I am asked by prospective clients is 'how many dogs will be in my class?' My clients pay for capped class sizes, that's the way they want it. They get good advice, follow up checks, email access, and a tangible amount of class time being assisted with their technique and they are happy to pay for it.
  5. I can recommend a breeder that will be breeding next year and she is very down to earth and pragmatic. In my puppy school and training classes though, I find that the parents of families with young kids who choose Lab pups always find them more difficult to manage than they thought. Often the most difficult thing is controlling the children's responses to the puppy, so you are training the puppy 4-fold if you are managing your own interactions and those of 3 kids vs. puppy. They absolutely need crate training, indoor stimulation, daily exercise that needs to increase gradually with their age, puppy school (4-5 weeks) training classes (8-10 weeks+) and environmental enrichment everyday. Is your garden precious to you? They often love to dig, chew up plants and up-end pots. Do you have time to add another baby to your family right now? In toilet training and obedience/manners training that's what you will have in varying degrees each day for at least 15 months. If you think you can then go for it, but it will be nothing less than adding a furry baby to your family.
  6. Don't worry too much tlc, it's been a while since I've seen a test but I'm pretty sure the reaction to another dog is from a distance, they are very concerned with safety for all dogs. They are also extremely good at recognising stress in dogs. Do lots of focus work around other dogs. They want to see that if she's a little reactive you know how to manage it.
  7. I was just editing this image to send up to the man in the photo. My sigma 18-200 gives me lots of nice images. This one's been edited a bit as his face was too dark and I'm novice at editing... But anyway, this is Frank, he lives in Arnhem Land. He speaks about 8 different dialects, English being 6th or 7th down the list. He is integral to our Vet program in that he can translate for us, knows the whole community (mostly ) the house numbers are not in any logical sequence. He can catch cheeky dogs (aggressive). He can give injections under supervision, he can scrub up animals for surgery and he can do basic nurse things like holding legs for IV's. During the year he is employed by the NT Government and he looks after environmental health, treats the dogs for parasites etc. Frank LOVES dogs, LOVES puppies, and we are actually suspicious that he is from the Dog Dreaming (because he won't tell us what his Dreaming is. ) It would take us 10 times the amount of time and effort to run the desexing program if he wasn't there to help us.
  8. Some Vets mix the C3 and KC component into one syringe.
  9. Maybe she is just trying to hold on tight to her lines....that's ok. But I don't see any reason why you can't hold a syndicate membership with her. I just don't like the "he is mine until 12 months" when he is living with you, and you are paying for his food & veterinary expenses.
  10. Shouldn't. I would treat with capstar once every week for 4 weeks, just in case you have any hitchhikers that laid eggs in your carpet/floorboards/couch.
  11. My boy was co-owned for a couple of years but on full papers. I was made part of the syndicate membership from the get-go. The deal was that with bitches from her kennel, he was free for her to use, any outside matings- we split the stud income. We split eye/hip/elbow testing 50% and both the co-owner and I were to agree on any bitches used for mating. I would accompany him and could be present if I wanted. I was very happy with my contract but I would be walking from the one you describe. We get too many people on this board whose breeders took the dog back for stud or whelping and won't return it to the owner. The dog is still microchipped and paper registered to the breeder- very sad.
  12. He would probably make a great delta therapy dog to work in a childrens hospital- since he has been unwell - gives very sick kids something to identify with.
  13. I've been given an ETA of 1st week in October for one of the prescription diets...so here's hoping.
  14. Please ask her to look up the current award rates too. She needs to think seriously about whether she is happy being a low income earner for quite a while, and maybe in the longer term.
  15. In Aus we get all our RC from France, so if there's strikes happening on the wharves there then yes, the food will be held up. I think there are a couple of other lines with no ETA currently.
  16. ;) Don't want to answer for her, but for me the reason is enrichment and enjoyment. The same reason I give them different and challenging toys, or teach them tricks, or take them to new places on the weekend. to all of the above, and also teaching your dog to deal with certain behaviours which aren't always 'acceptable'. I love that this gets held up so often as an example and yet so often we hear you can't compare dogs and humans, it apples and oranges Sometimes we have to anthropomorphise, so people 'get it'. ;)
  17. I'm not making any presumptions about whose fault it was in the OP. I just like to post this article when discussions such as these come up as I think it's a gem. He Just Wants to Say Hi!
  18. I guess you can register him as an associate if you don't want the hassle of getting signatures etc.
  19. Cute as! Staffords and their bellies...
  20. So sorry about your dog Elfin I hope he makes a full recovery, just unbelievable and the sad thing is that lady ISN'T the minority. Can you find a no-win no-fee solicitor down here who has a little experience with dog attacks? I think you do need to get your money back and that might be the best way. Otherwise organise to meet a ranger down there for the next few weeks at the same time, sounds like she is stupid enough to go back there.
  21. Robert Hilton - I think you can find him at Lort Smith.
  22. What's the club name? Just in case I have clients looking for a club.
