Best Anti-chewing Spray?
Staff'n'Toller replied to UltimatePup's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I find bitter lime works on some puppies but not all. It may be owner compliance not re-applying every day also though. There's a Vet product called wound guard and it has a few different things in it, dogs tend to dislike the smell as well as the taste. ETA: Better management is your best defence. Identify what might be a problem, prevent the puppy from practicing the behaviour, redirect where necessary. -
Dog Boot Recommentations Please
Staff'n'Toller replied to White Shepherd mom's topic in General Dog Discussion
I recently got a carpal wrap for one of my dogs through a Physio here in Melbourne. Very well made. It was from here: Therapaw Boots These look even better actually: Neopaws Boots You need something with a sole, but not so high that it changes his posture dramatically...that's my novice thoughts about it not an expert opinion by any stretch. I've used a muttluk boot and it just couldn't go the distance on hard surfaces... -
Pet Insurance Aust / Medibank
Staff'n'Toller replied to Sticks1977's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You can ring PIA and they can call the clinic and request it. However legally your Vet Clinic cannot refuse to give it to you. You will need the full history for your first claim, from any clinic you've been to, anywhere. -
Pet Insurance Aust / Medibank
Staff'n'Toller replied to Sticks1977's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
All PIA premiums have increased for this financial year. I think there's going to be a lot of change in the coming 5 years or so with companies and prices until they find their feet, and the number of policy holders increases. At the moment the number of policy holders is just a tiny fraction of the pet owning population, prices aren't going to go down until it's a majority IMO. -

Animal/dog Management In Indigenous Communities
Staff'n'Toller replied to persephone's topic in General Dog Discussion
Didn't it come about after a person was killed by a pack of dogs in one of the indiginous communities, now they are trying to control the numbers of dogs at the camps? Not sure if this is correct so just asking to see if anyone knows. :D No, AMRRIC had been running for a number of years before that. If you mean the recent one in M*aningrida, the inquiry into his death has not happened yet AFAIK so the cause of death is not conclusive. -

If anyone's been in recent years staying at the Moira Scout Camp, I would love to PM you with a couple of questions, not training related- just don't want to bother the workshop organiser at this stage. Thanks! Mel.

Pack Dog Promblems Help Please
Staff'n'Toller replied to kat99's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
She may be stressed moving to a new place and into a home with 2 other established dogs. You definitely need some help but it will be the pushy male you will be doing the most work with. It's never ok in a multi-dog household for a dog to be taking other dogs food. -
Endep 50 For Golden Retriever
Staff'n'Toller replied to loulouB's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just in reverse to showdog I know a GSD who's on a lower dose and the owners say it doesn't touch the sides. Keep in touch with the prescribing ?Vet Behaviourist, don't feel like you are annoying them even if you are calling or emailing a couple of times a week. I've been on a very low dose for migraine headaches which in extremely low doses just acts as a muscle relaxant. But I know humans can have 100-150mg as a standard dose for other issues. I've been on it a long time, the side effects are barely noticeable. -
Boarding Kennels Melbourne
Staff'n'Toller replied to Pretty Miss Emma's topic in General Dog Discussion
Quite a few of our clients use Cottage Kennels...not sure if they take diabetics. You could always board your older dog with your Vet clinic if she is not too stressy. -
Help, I'm Confused - Which Pet Insurance?
Staff'n'Toller replied to Lollipup's topic in General Dog Discussion
My first claims from PIA have come back fairly quickly. One hiccup that was sort of due to me trying to be too efficient but didn't think how it would look to the insurance when I submitted it. Sent a stat dec and all was fine BUT I called them to make sure the claim was going through and found out about it that way...a letter came the same day. Just got my renewal and it's gone up $4 a month. Apparently they have adjusted all policies to try to make it a fairer system. I doubt I will ever be a medibank human insurance customer as they are too exy even with the multi-policy discount so will leave things how they are for this year. -
Liverpool Road Retarding Basin Snake Warning
Staff'n'Toller replied to JulesP's topic in General Dog Discussion
Correct, I think there was a sign but it wasn't present for many years about dogs being on lead. Now they've put a new one up. It used to be an awesome place but as it has become more popular....well you know how it goes...school mornings are generally fairly quiet though as that's the time I go past. It's just weekends and over summer that it can be packed. If there's only 2-4 cars in the carpark chances are you might not even cross paths which is nice. Just as a general FYI there are horses in the properties on the Chandler Rd side and the fences are such that dogs can just run in if they get excited. -
Liverpool Road Retarding Basin Snake Warning
Staff'n'Toller replied to JulesP's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's a Melbourne Water property, and all dogs should be on lead, except generally none are. There is a large dam and creek catchments, lots of frogs, birdlife and areas for snakes to live. LOL ok so no grass cutting.... well in summer I would avoid this natural habitat. Hmmm they do slash probably 50% of grassed areas, but I'm not sure how we'd go requesting more frequent grass cutting from MW!! ETA: You are right though, it's still a fire hazard with the National Park not more than a km away. -
If you are really frustrated take a 2 day break, no training and just enjoy your puppy. Socialisation is super important at this stage, check out Dunbars books Before You Get Your Puppy and After You Get Your Puppy, he has some good guidelines on sociaslisation. Another great thing is to teach Zen at this age, nice gentle massage under the collar or around the shoulders or neck area until you see some calming signals (yawning, lip smacking, laying down). Don't force the issue but start with very short sessions and work up so you can start massaging other areas (legs, paws, head, ears, tail etc.) you will need this for general examination of paws, mouth and ears and it's a great bonding activity. Try training some tricks, break down the behaviour on paper and test yourself out. Then there is no pressure, your puppy will learn to learn and you are building value for the clicker.

I haven't take it personally. You are wrong about 'most' nurses being kennel attendants. If that's the case at your clinic, I'd be worried about untrained kennel attendants monitoring my pets anaesthesia, because that's what they do, everyday. Well you'd know that since you were a Vet Nurse. You put comments up here and I have every right, just as anyone else, to reply. I did and I will continue to - where statements about the profession in which I work are inaccurate, and posted in the General forum that members and particularly non-members can see.

The Bernese lady is really nice!! There are lots of dogs under not much control there unfortunately. The grass has been high for most of the lead up to Summer, I felt fairly worried there would be lots of snakes about now. -

How Do You Train A Kelpie Its Boundries?
Staff'n'Toller replied to esther123's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You have very nice neighbours. First time I pick a dog up I will return it but 2nd and subsequent times they go to the pound. Get a fencing contractor out to talk about how you might make a day yard whilst still retaining access to your driveway etc. It probably doesn't even have to be an acre of containment. -
In Aus there is a Cert IV in Veterinary Nursing and a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing so yes, if they are qualified they ARE Nurses and they CAN absolutely provide medical information to their skill level. Maybe the nurses are only receptionists at your clinic but that is not the norm. Please don't denigrate our profession further than it already is. MANY nurses are qualified in medical and surgical and MANY get paid less than a Safeway checkout operator!!!

The Average Age Of A Dog In Aust Is Only 3.5yrs?
Staff'n'Toller replied to Beaglelover:)'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Yup it's true, not sure of the exact age in 2010 but that was from a few years back. I'm sure Kersti or the staff at Sydney Animal Behaviour Service could direct you to the relevant data. Or you could try the Animal Welfare Bureau they may also have the information. -
Anal Glands Done At A Vet

Unless it's a huge gaping wound they are left to drain or they close up and abscess again. We would definitely want to recheck it was healing well within the week.
