  1. We have it at $160 however I have a massive pile of pricing to go through so yes, the manufacturer may have put it up. You can't get it online as it's a prescription medicine and has applicable laws to go with the dispensing of it, including such things as your Vet providing follow up whilst your dog is on this drug. You can shop around but to get it elsewhere will involve another consultation fee. Unfortunately NSAID's are not cheap but they are gold for dogs who really need it. Why don't you call your clinic and have a chat to them about the other tablets on the market (there are also Metacam tabs now) between yourself and the nurse you can probably work out a cost per day for your dog and compare the brands. Be aware though that manufacturers put prices up all the time with no regard to the end user....just the way it is unfortunately.
  2. People do not limp around unless it is painful to weight bear, neither do dogs- so it would be painful. Hopefully it is just a sprain.
  3. Don't use neocort- may slow down the healing time. You could try an natural aloe based product.
  4. Thiopentone is a barbituate that's use results in a very slow recovery time, and it's also very outdated and if accidentally given external to the vein it can cause tissue necrosis. Propofol has a very fast recovery time. Thio has not been routinely used in hospitals for a good fifteen years. I know what it is and know about the side effects. But Propofol has side effects too. And I know for a fact Thio is still used in one of the top Specialist Hospitals by a Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia so I wouldn't say its not routinely used. If you work with an awesome Vet you never get tissue necrosis, prolonged recovery or anaesthetic deaths due to Thio. I've had a crash anaesthetic with Propofol and I can tell you it's nasty. Sorry to quote you in as well Stormie but I agree it's fine if the Vet is very comfortable using it.
  5. I don't worry about pre-GA bloods either but I understand that I take that risk upon myself. There is no question in my mind that speys of any age wake up a lot better with operative/postoperative fluids. It is still a very invasive surgery.
  6. And bag of 1000ml normal Saline 0.9% (or Hartmanns) costs at the most $5.00-$8.00, IV line about the same. I am sure vets would not pay much more than we do at our Private Radiology Practice. And all the Aneasthetic drugs are not that expensive either except Ketamine. It is not as if vets have to pay those huge Insurance fees Aneasthetists pay. Propofol and Alfaxan is actually quite pricey. We use opioids with most pre-meds too. Extension sets are more like 12-15 and a giving set (well the only ones we can use in our IV pumps) are about 35-40 each. I am not objecting to the options, that's quite alright and they should be offered. I'm just thinking that the prices sound a bit off.
  7. Are you sure it was $200 for fluid therapy. $240 just for the pre-anaesthetic profile???
  8. Excellent post. I have very strict criteria for homes, purchase agreement (which includes desexing) which is very fair. Some (and I've said this from the word go SOME) potential puppy buyers are so egotistical and pretty much throw a tanty when they don't get what they want or I refuse to sell them a dog. Makes it even worse when they go somewhere else and buy a puppy that is left alone for 7 hrs a day (a big nono for me) with no companionship. So because they are able to get a dog from somewhere else I am, of course, the big bad mean breeder with unrealistic expectations. I don't run this as an animal business....my dogs are more than just mere "livestock"......and if "some" puppy buyers view the purchase of one of my dogs compared to buying a fridge or cattle for the back paddock.....then yes please, go somewhere else. With that said I have wonderful puppy owners who frequent with emails and photos of their dogs sprawled out over the bed. Owners like that are gold. I don't look at my dogs as livestock either, but when it comes down to the bare bones, that is what you are selling. You have terms of sale that's fine, but you are SELLING something. You are taking money in exchange for 'goods' and whether or not you profit from it in the final analysis, or whether it's a part-time concern is of no consequence. It is still a business transaction with another party. If you are not refunding the deposit, but not producing a puppy for sale - what do you deem the deposit being for? That was my point.
  9. Lay-by's are refundable less the order processing cost which is in the vicinity of $10. Breeders wanting non-refundable deposits are wanting to be paid for the time on email/phone vetting prospective buyers - that much is quite clear. I would pay a non-refundable dep AFTER I have met the Dam and hopefully the Sire, and the breeder and AFTER being provided with documentation about what happens with my money in the non-event of a pup out of the prospective litter i.e. my money is refunded or carries over to the next litter. You are selling livestock, you (generally) have a registered domestic animal business, you are a business just like any other livestock business. You can't take peoples money for no service or product and not refund it.
  10. I'm pretty sure Luke Hura uses a KGS and then releases from that position once the behaviour is learned.
  11. I would do as Kavik says, throw your food in between his feet, continuously at first then release. Then later you can slow down your rate of food throws. You can start a release word with Sit, Click, Treat, Treat, Treat, Treat, OK!. He will pick it up very quickly. When you think about it, your click is marking in the learning phase so if you are getting nose touches you can just throw food for each nose touch now and release when ready. I was having soooo much trouble with 2o2o, I mean obviously it's the trainer! We were getting multiple nose touches but from training session to training session it just wasn't sticking in his brain. I got a copy of 2o2o it doesn't use a target as such but it does break the behaviour right down for you. I will teach all mine this way from now on.
  12. The advocate is probably still working. You will continue to see fleas as they appear through the lifecycle. We seem to be getting a lot of that expectation that all fleas will be gone the next day which just doesn't happen. Adult fleas you see are 5% of the total population, so you are doing population reduction and this will take quite some time. If the flea is going slow enough that you can catch it- it's dying. If you also treat the cats then that's great. Hot wash and tumble dry all bedding regularly, put a flea collar in your vacuum bag.
  13. These are the ones I am talking about. You need to be really confident in your dog and it's ability to avoid problems regardless of how they present themselves (and not always their fault) to go to one of them. We do go to unfenced off leash areas like the beach etc. I think it also raises the question about whether the dog is actually enjoying it's time if it constantly needs to avoid problems whilst it's there.
  14. Put it on your facebook (or a friends if you don't have one) and ask all your friends to spread it. It'll go viral quickly.
  15. Great post!!! Should be a sticky!
  16. R+ P- What can happen when you use P+? Primary and secondary reinforcers. Successive approximation. Generalisation. Luring and shaping. Intermediate levels: Back-chaining and stimulus package. Latent learning.
  17. Dogs In Motion Woofpurnay I haven't encountered any dogs off lead at Banksia Park in Heidelberg/Kew when I've walked there, that's not to say there aren't any, but I find it much like Lilydale Lake. Lilydale Lake if you walk left and go over the boardwalk, then turn left at the end of it onto that backstreet, there is a second wetlands and walking track about 200mts down the road, that area is also all on lead.
  18. Does your dog like swimming megan? I take mine to the pool sometimes, it's a relief just to be able to book it for myself and know no other dogs will bother us there!! There's two in South-Eastern Vic.
  19. Any qualified instructor, NDTF, Delta or otherwise would have been able to discuss these easily with you. The same goes for most volunteer-staffed large clubs that run here, as JulesP says they run their own theory courses. I can only think that you chose very badly 3 times, or that you assumed the trainers were dumb at the time. Clients want results, and fairly quickly, they want some theory behind what they are doing but dog handling is by nature a very hands-on thing. You are happy to read 10 books on the subject, I have trouble getting my clients to open their training manual of 20 pages. That's why you have trouble here Corvus, you are in academia. We are mostly all service providers.
  20. Eye injuries change from being ok to not ok very quickly. You should have a Vet revisit @ 5 days at any rate, I would go in today, you need Vet or specialist advice on this.
  21. Where are you instructing at the moment Muddybear? I see back-pedaling in your future.
  22. Firstly, I would be happy if I had original certified copies of the PRA results. If it were me I would get the Penn hip done at the appropriate age and go from there. Penn hip will give you the most accurate information of the formation of the hips. I wouldn't desex at this time or feel pressured into any other surgery until you've discussed the Penn hip results (and if they are bad, slept on it, then discussed it with your breeder). You have to ultimately decide that if you have a dog with average hips, that you may have to deal again with a dog with a shortened lifespan, and that it becomes expensive later in life for supportive medications. If you don't want that or wanted a sports dog you may need to think again. IMO 7/7 is not much different to 9/10...but that's just my opinion.
  23. Staffords are very precious about toileting on wet grass.
  24. I guess it will come eventually but the problem is that current chips are 'benign' they are only activated by the transponder. Chips that need tracking need a battery and that would need to be replaced in time.
