Just as an aside, my boy was in a cast for about 8 weeks due to a severed tendon. He was in a full cast for some time then a moulded leg support. He was able to swim with the full cast on at Dogs In Motion after being approved by the Physio. But it will add more expense to the surgery...to keep the dog sane you might expect to be swimming her 2-3 times weekly, and spending a fortune on bandages. Plus there is an extra time commitment in travel etc.

The other important aspect is that 3 year core vaccination is the protocol recommended by the AVA. It's all fine to say Vets are in it for the money, however if they are only titre testing, they may be considered to be going against AVA guidelines. People seem happy to sue for a lot less these days. Distemper and Hepatitis are rarely seen, sure, but if a client loses a dog to Parvo and the Vet was operating out of AVA guidelines - OMG - what a minefield that is yet untested in the courts. Clients need to be very aware of what they are entering into. We have much the same uptake as Stormie has noted - very little. I titre my dogs, but I understand very clearly what I am doing, if you're a client and you don't have a science brain, it can be difficult to understand. It's unfair to say Vets are uncaring about this. My boss can remember a time when there was no parvo vaccine, when he had scores of animals dying everyday and not enough room in the hospital to cater for it, he never ever wants to relive it. I'm not saying it's something that would ever happen these days, however you can't blanket statement things to do with vaccinating/not vaccinating.

My Dog Took Sick Yesterday With A Mystery Illness
Staff'n'Toller replied to jase293's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm very sorry for your loss. The decision to get another dog is very personal, some people feel they need to straight away, others tend to wait a while. Often where there's kids involved sooner rather than later can help them. It's important to have a family discussion and know that everyone is ready, and that you are not 'replacing' either of your previous dogs, but adding a new family member who will make new memories for you all. -
Vet Comparsions - Am I Paying Too Much?
Staff'n'Toller replied to Thelms's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's hard to know what was done at the dental, but your spey is a very competitive price. I wouldn't be looking at changing if you are happy with your Vet- you aren't being ripped off from what I can see. -
He's a demi-god to me! I was laughing because compared to the way my eyes light up when I hear Bob Bailey's name, your comment was so low key I was keenly aware of what a groupie I am. ;) I was just poking fun at myself. Awww, Nekhbet. And here I was thinking I might have a career in writing policy. But come on, be fair. I was limited to a single statement. And I kinda cheated by cramming several ideas into the one sentence. Sometimes big words just say it better. ;) Going by your paragraph I would say that you most likely do! That's laughing with you not at you. ;)

Vet In S-e Melbourne Who Believes In Raw
Staff'n'Toller replied to Ozmutt's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Bob Cavey is happy to do titre testing. I'm not sure what his preferences are on raw feeding but I can't see that he'd pressure you to buy commercial food. -
Did you have any luck?

I heard the issue was the latter. Comfortis is cleared by the liver in 7 days, so leaving 14 days between HW/Flea doses *should* be ok. ETA: Once you have a flea population Sentinel and Capstar combined can take 6-12 months to eliminate your life cycle at home. Insect growth regulators always take longer because of how they work. You won't see much difference in a month.

We have the opportunity to have a go at Canine Disc this Sunday 25th in Melbourne. Damian Noud, President of Canine Disc Australia, who won the World Dog Games, along with Jeff Socha who was in the recent Australia's Got Talent have kindly offered to donate some time to run us through the basics. The workshop will run in the Doncaster area, Sunday morning, the cost will be $10 to cover insurance. Please PM me if you're definitely interested in coming along with your dog. Limited spaces available. Mel.

It may not leave him defenceless, but what it will do is block some facial expression, which is extremely important in a community of camp dogs. Jibwa if you want to continue running with your dog, I would drive to the outskirts of the community and run with your dog there- where there are no camp dog packs around.

Grrrr...idiots At Off Leash Dog Only Parks
Staff'n'Toller replied to Juddabug Whippets's topic in General Dog Discussion
In a word, yes, that sort of scenario is reported quite often on this board (varying States and parks of course). What you must do, anytime you witness this, is to call your council ranger immediately and report it. All dogs must still be under effective voice control (i.e. have a recall) and if they don't, they can be fined. It may be worth reporting the incident anyway, and very kindly requesting the rangers do some patrols down there on a regular basis. You will find a lot of experienced members on this board avoid dog parks entirely for this reason. Be very careful where you go whilst your 13m.o. Whippet settles in. -
Urgent Recommendation Required
Staff'n'Toller replied to Lemonlime's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
There are specialist clinics in Mt Waverley, Kensington and Essendon. She does need to see an internal medicine specialist if she feels she is not getting any answers, however it won't be cheap. -
Retrieving & Field Training Talk

You wouldn't come even if he was able to eat kibble :p Probably not. Im not afraid to admit i hate camping, i need my shower and electricity. Spent 27 years in africa where every 2nd day i either had no water or no power and i hate it. So lets just say i did 27 years camping and am now soooo over it. Ness i dont feed tinned sardines only fresh from fish market If you wanted to get serious you could get a camping fridge/freezer combo and install an extra battery in your car to run it. However, it's a personal choice about the financial outlay of such a thing. -
Well, I think that falls under the heading of "improper use". If I can get a dog that hates his head being restrained to come running for his eye drops every 3 hours, I think most dogs can be taught to like a head collar. That's not really a valid comparison. Having your muzzle held for a minute or less to apply eye drops is different to a dog having to wear a head collar for a prolonged period of time. I can go on but this is OT...

Have you tried the Vets in Darwin? Perhaps if you bought say, 3-4 bags they would organise to road freight it for you??
