Is This A Lost Cause?
Staff'n'Toller replied to jaybeece's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I guess as a short term thing the sorts of things you can try are: Keep them separated for a good while but do on lead walks every day together. Move them apart if they are showing signs of stress, but parallel walking is excellent for letting dogs run through their body language, show calming signals and get to know each other in a non-threatening way. I can't stress enough how valuable this sort of exercise is to dogs. Both of you brush up on your training and mat or crate train so that you are telling the dogs how they should behave or what they should do in the house when unrestricted together (later on). Make a huge emphasis of the dogs focusing on their owners and heavily reward that whenever your dogs are crossing paths. Always, always reward either dog for showing calming signals or trying to avoid confrontation with the other *nb this may not be possible in the beginning if it heightens tension through resource guarding. Install DAP diffusers in the house and think about trying the DAP collars for both dogs. It could simply be your boy feeling territorial. This might simmer down or it may never work, I wouldn't be throwing the baby out with the bath water but what I would do is keep them separated for now and discuss plans with your housemate for how they should interact in the house later. -
I'm pretty sure the Tru Blu K9000's can only run on mains water - so no water re-use happening. Until I move and can afford a hydrobath and dryer (i.e. when pigs fly) I take the Toller to one and I find it very good. The baths are always rinse disinfected, I have seen the service station attendants doing it on a regular basis even when other people don't, and I use the last 40 seconds to disinfect after I let the dog out.

Dog Thinks Cats Are Toys
Staff'n'Toller replied to chuckandsteve's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If they are disturbing the peace there's a chance you have a few ferals around, in which case you can borrow a trap from your council and then have the ranger pick them up and assess them at the pound. If they are chipped they will be returned to the owners with a warning about confining their cats at night and keeping them off other people's property. Random FYI - not in response to the OP - I think you have done all you can under the circumstances. -
Lost Or Stolen Black Labrador After Robbery
Staff'n'Toller replied to Kirty's topic in General Dog Discussion
Will keep a keen eye out. -
Here in Vic pound time is 8 days. So after 8 days the pound/shelter own the dog, after the dog is chipped and re-sold (to you) you are the legal owner. Previous owners gave up any legal recourse by not collecting from the pound (whether they knew the dog was there or not).

How about: return to your Vet and talk to them about working it up further. The OP's Vet has prescribed the right therapy for an acutely injured leg where the injury is not obvious i.e. a cruciate tear, luxating patella or fracture. It's a first line therapy, then you can go further if needed with the original Vet.

Ah she looks sweet! I'm sure she will be very happy having one of her people at home all day.

You could hire a car out for cheaper and vac it very, very well before you return it. :p Try your Vet Clinic, us lowly paid Vet Nurses can be bribed with cash in hand for pick ups and drop offs....just sayin'.

You aren't allowed to check on them during the trip at all, apparently, OH&S.

Vet Nurse - Wages - Supporting Self
Staff'n'Toller replied to tiff-689's topic in General Dog Discussion
What you've been quoted is the award, and was only recently revised, so the base award was worse than that. Before this revision we had individual agreements where you could have been right royally screwed over. Luckily my boss was great about ours. Night shift and public holidays in emergency is the best paying, probably the Specialist clinics could be a good wage too but you may find yourself working 12 hr days on a regular basis. I had lunch on my way home at 4pm today. That was my first break after 10am brekky. To work in general practice you need to love working with sick and sometimes very sick animals, taking part in euthanasia and doing lots and lots and lots of cleaning. I can easily do four loads of washing in a day after vacuuming, mopping, wiping benches, scrubbing surgical instruments. If you are absolutely awesome with budgetting and can attain financial goals, and never having any spare play money won't make you miserable then go for it - it doesn't need to be forever. But if a house in the suburbs is what you want more than Vet Nursing then you might be wise to think about volunteering in the animal field instead. -
Blood And Bone Garden Fertilizer
Staff'n'Toller replied to perth_girl's topic in General Dog Discussion
Pretty much all blood and bone that comes from garden centres have added ingredients that are bad for dogs. Eating that sort of product in large enough quantities (comparitive to the size of the dog) can cause haemorrhagic gastro and death. -
Geebus you guys!!! Stop bumping this thread!

http://www.travmed.com/health_guide/ch10.htm Beware of scare-mongering on the TV. Why would you say this is scare mongering? I know the teenager and his mother and it is real enough. It has been the most devastating 18 months of this family's life Because it's very rare- 10 cases in 50 years makes it so. I said beware of scare mongering because the parasite does not automatically cause meningitis, it causes meningitis in some cases. The amount of dogs that like to eat snails is huge and in 10 years of nursing I've never seen a dog with meningitis that was caused by this worm. We would also hear from the emergency centres if there was a huge rise. I just meant people shouldn't freak out every time they see a snail in their dog's mouth. Sorry to your friend.

Ewwww...I second wool wash very dilute but you may need a steam cleaner for that job!

Manners Minder - Best Place To Buy?
Staff'n'Toller replied to pie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You guys are aware that the MM only takes dry or semi-moist treats right? -
I had a phone call about that today. A client was worried as their dog licks snail slime off the concrete. After some research I found that it's a roundworm that's killed using a common wormer for humans. Most peoples immune system will kill the larvae. Contracting meningitis from it is quite rare. Reported cases were about 10 in the last 50 years although they are doing a study on that now. A few sites seem to concur with this: http://www.travmed.com/health_guide/ch10.htm Beware of scare-mongering on the TV.
