  1. Mmmmmmm, perhaps we should all check our dates? ETA: Sas I think you'll find that ALOT of ppl have given Andoria advice, then a trainer is chosen with absolutely no credentials, it's hard to tell if any of the original advice was taken.
  2. That was the impression I got, but I have given Andoria people to call in NSW, a very good trainer that I personally know who can recommend someone in her area, and the name of some awesome behaviourists up there. So it's entirely up to her. Mel.
  3. In essence (for myszka) the trainer forced the dog to lay on it's side and submit whilst she held it there with her leg over it. Trainer got very bitten and so did the owners when they tried it. Solution for running up the stairs when not wanted: Shove the dog back down the stairs. Solution for rushing through doors: Wait until the dog has run through then punish it with the door (you can figure out what that means). Mel.
  4. I think everyone should just relax.. Hate mail and death threats are two totally different things- which one is it? Either way, I agree with Rom, may not have been any actual members of DOL, quite frankly I have better things to do with my time. BUT if she has been receiving emails of this nature, then she can contact police, who in turn can start an investigation and trace *those* back to their ISP's. It's quite hard to hide these days. Mel.
  5. Bingo- that can be half the problem, there is no distinction between what is and what isn't a toiletting area. It is quite normal that he won't take himself out there yet- but shut the door for now, make toilet time a ritual and he will be more likely to take the initiative himself later on. Once he is trained you'll be able to leave the door open and send him out using the cue word that you have taught. As the others have said let him off the lead, and be a tree whilst you're out there, don't talk to him too much or engage in games. If he follows you around then the best thing to do is buy a double ended leash and attach it around your waist then back to him- umbilical cord- and block off carpeted areas for now, close bedroom doors, anywhere where he can go when you're not watching him, and looking for his signs. BTW he won't need to go straight after a meal- more like 15mins to half an hour later. Mel.
  6. How weird, so sorry you lost her, would have been very shocking for you both. Sounds like 1080 but that is only from my limited experience of nursing a dog poisoned with 1080. From what you described in your first post I would think you got a false negative for one of those toxins, but what and how may be a mystery forever. Mel.
  7. Shoey if you're after Beyond Basic Dog Training I have a copy you can lend for a bit. Mel.
  8. It depends in what situation you are using the calming signals - yes they are good, but us humans don't usually get them right in the context that the puppy would understand. Why are showing her calming signals anyway? Mel.
  9. ;) Common sense tells us it is not possible to completely eliminate risks, (though yes I certainly take precautions with footwear when there are young puppies at home, in fact shoes are left at the door), but risks can minimised as much as possible. After all, would you try and cross the road when the traffic is at it's busiest, or would you wait until there is little to no traffic and then cross? Pedantic is pedantic. But some people like to live on the edge. Devil may care adventurers. My question wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, but I am curious to know. If you are taking precautions that include pups not being allowed off your property until 13 weeks, I'm wondering how many people actually take the same precautions with themselves when coming into the property. You are just as likely to walk parvo into your house....particularly when you think about all the places we go to in a day, much more than planning outside socialisation for young pups to certain environments. That's all, peace out.
  10. Oh that's right, I do remember now you say that, my apologies. ;) Mel.
  11. Ahhhh I wondered what dark slimey hole kool dragged himself out of....now I know. Funny how Dougie has been so quiet lately. Choose another name kipmckool- you're way too predictable. SOOOOOO..... a question to all those who don't like putting their pups on the ground, do you all remove your shoes and strip off your clothing at the door every time you come home from work/outings and enforce it with the rest of your family until the pup is fully vaccinated? OR alternatively, do you have a shoe bath at your front door that you stand in for ten minutes (because that's how long disinfection takes FYI) before you wear your shoes in the house? Oh and if you do the shoe bath, with the correct dilutions of course do you scrub the soles of your shoes first? Because biological matter (dirt) renders disinfectant useless... Mel.
  12. I would have to agree with Warley there, I haven't fed it for many years but it used to be great. I looked after some dogs over xmas whose main diet was this (gundogs) they have to eat soooooo much of the stuff to keep any sort of condition!! It has gotten bigger and alot paler in colour which would tell me = more filler. Mel.
  13. Puppies do itch/scratch more than adult dogs, it has to do with skin and coat changes so it doesn't necessarily mean he has fleas, but you might want to treat again for a couple of months with Frontline to knock over any population that might be brewing. Are you using a good quality dog shampoo for bathing? Also don't bathe too often, once a fortnight is plenty. The tear staining can be due to low grade conjunctivitis, maybe just low grade allergies at the moment with the summer, some dogs are a bit sensitive to getting dust in their eyes. I'm not sure about the blocked tear ducts in that I haven't heard that it is hereditary, but I haven't heard that it isn't either. It can also be entropian (eyelashes rolled inwards) or distichiasis (extra eyelashes) but it would be questionable in such a young pup, particularly if he is from a registered breeder who is getting the dam and sires eyes tested annually. Dog's do have glands either side of their penis that are present when they are aroused but not all the time, this could possibly be what you are seeing but they are usally equal on both sides. If you are concerned or it is worrying him then a visit to the Vet may be needed before next Vaccination time. You could also pop in and see the nurse on the desk (call first to see when they are not busy) and they would be able to advise you if you needed to book in for an appointment with the Vet. Hope that answers a few questions. Mel.
  14. He will probably need to get up at least once during the night to go to the toilet regardless of how late you keep him up. Mel.
  15. ROYAL CANIN Intestinal GI 30 Indications: # Diarrhoea. # Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). # Maldigestion, malabsorption. # Colitis. # Convalescence. # Bacterial overgrowth. # Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) The Royal Canin also has hypoallergenic formula and digestive low fat formula with EPI listed as an indication. If their Vet doesn't stock it they should certainly be able to easily get it in for them. Mel.
  16. They MUST MUST MUST get her off pal, the proteins are carbs are of shit quality. She needs to be on a super premium SENIOR food or a prescription diet depending on the diagnosis...which is?? She might have diarrhoea for a few days if they do a quick food changeover but that is fairly normal, she won't be digesting much of that pal if she has a medical condition and that's why she's skin and bone!!!! Mel.
  17. $$$$$$$ Maybe they figure they can surprise newbie puppy owners and trick them into it before they have a chance to find out the adverse effects of Proheart (like death) Just the messenger Morgan I certainly don't use it with my guys and they're on limited Vaccinations too. Mel.
  18. Fort Dodge have a new claim out now - can do pups from 3mths. I don't know the why's and wherefor's though. Mel.
  19. I have an old info sheet on it haven, from IDEXX so any Vet can take some blood and send it off. From memory it needs to be in an EDTA tube but if it needs to be spun down before sending then that may present a problem for some Vets who don't have the equipment to do it. If I have enough cash I want to get my Stafford tested as she hasn't been done for about 3yrs and I am interested to find out where she is at. Edited to add - I think we can only do parvo and distemper titres or parvo and hepatitis e.g. not all three are available yet to my knowledge. Cheers, Mel.
  20. Check with your club to see if they will accept a titre test. Unfortunately we can't test for kennel cough anitbodies at the moment, but I have heard of some Vet's changing to a kennel cough booster once a year and the DHP not as often. Cheers, Mel.
