Why Can't People Control There Dogs On Lead?
Staff'n'Toller replied to SwaY's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I was just commenting this morning how I was training yesterday and there were barking + reactive dogs everywhere, and in contrast how nice it was to go to my private club to instruct this morning and hear n o t h i n g....4 classes running and no noise...it's all in the owner education and the stress level of the dogs. I Want To Learn To Train
Staff'n'Toller replied to Mushaka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If your Stafford does have 'severe' separation anxiety then you really need a Vet Behaviour Consult. SABS.com.au Mel. -
Electric fencing - ping string etc etc.

The dog didn't stuff up, he was being a dog.

Positive Gundog
Staff'n'Toller replied to wheres my rock's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks Stella! I figured it could be retrained, he was only ever given a bird wing at 6 weeks for a try out and I haven't let him muck around with any since then, so no chance of developing any bad habits with real birdies. Mel. -

*Thread hijack* sorry Stella but I have to ask while LL is around my Toller boy mouths his tennis balls- like he flicks them around in his mouth and does the bite-bite-bite thing- is there any hope for him to hold ducks without damaging them?? Mel. -

I've just bought it but haven't started reading it yet. -
You are doing the right things. At 5 months he is getting to be too old for puppy school, he is very different developmentally to other pups who might be younger. He is scared- that's why he is showing those behaviours, all the pups should be on a lead. I agree with the others, you will be doing him more harm by going back there...about time to start at real school. I will PM you. Mel.

My bet is they had tummy upsets or something similar... -
How Often Do You Worm Your Dogs?
Staff'n'Toller replied to shmoo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The treatment is in and out of the body within 12hrs, so it wipes out existing worms but does nothing for residual efffect. -
I like Collie Castle. My dogs are getting bistro blinds all around the pergola soon it will be more like a kennel complex. (It's really so I can sit outside in front of my chiminea without feeling like I'm in a wind tunnel)

Congrats to everyone that has passed I'm really getting stressed about mine now. So they went under and over the 10Kph? I have noticed it's hard to keep to the exact 10k's in training. Mel.

How Much Do You Pay For 20 Mg Fortekor?
Staff'n'Toller replied to wizard1's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You shouldn't be able to, they are both Scheduled drugs, you'll get stung eventually. Mel. -
Proheart Heartworm Tablets- Advantix Etc
Staff'n'Toller replied to periau's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Depends which part of QLD you are moving to but they are having lots of probs with fleas at the moment. I'm pretty sure Bayer says you can use Advocate and Advantix concurrently- say 2 weeks apart with doses- but I'm not sure why you'd want to, a once a month application of pesticides is plenty for any dogs immune system IMO. I would prolly not worry too much at this stage and check in with your local Vet when u get there, see if they are having any huge issues with ticks or fleas, or both. Advantix works awesomely well for fleas, mozzies and flies down here in Melb.....but not sure how it's going up north. Mel. -
20/20 Clinics And Hip Scoring
Staff'n'Toller replied to Sayreovi's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ray at Monash is quite specialised and has done a lot of hard work with Penn Hip. You can get your Vet to do the DNA swab and send it to GTG asking for it to be held until next batching day. I have the GTG stuff at work...dunno if you want to travel that far though. Mel. -
Training A Dog To Hold Its Tail Down
Staff'n'Toller replied to Seita's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You need to first make her 'aware' of her tail...you might need to wrap the top of it as in Tellington Touch..?? Mel. -
They have done clinical trials on five consecutive treatments and measured sperm count and motility, pathologically everything appears to return to pre-implant status, if people want to view it, they can get in contact with Peptech. Interestingly, they are now conducting a study into the effectivenes of the implant for bitches and spayed female dogs with urinary incontinence. ETA: Trial data Mel.

Erny I have had it done to my boy twice, and didn't notice any escalation in his behaviour. I found that in the first week or two that he was much quieter than usual, but then it disappears. After the second implant the lethargy was less noticeable. In saying this though, I let the first implant 'run out' because I was curious to see how long it actually lasted and for a week or so after the second implant I didn't take him anywhere b/c I knew what he would be like, so I can't officially report on increase of symptoms. I have spoken with a Vet Behaviourist in general about this, and we agreed it would be useful for cases where you are not sure if the behaviour is testosterone based or learned behaviour, and would give a good indication about whether desexing was going to make any/much difference. Yeah you will need to go to amazon or dogwise.com to get the good books. 'Everydog' by Eric Allen and Rowan Blogg is a good one in basic care and health, and is written by Australian Vets. I've got 'First Aid for Dogs' by Tim Hawcroft, it's a small book and I found it for really cheap here in Vic, but it's been awesome for when the dogs eat something they're not supposed to and you want to check if they need treatment. (I still use it for obscure things even though I'm a nurse). Mel.

Sorry, but do you have proof of this and where? I know of a cat trainer here in Aus, and knowing her father, I can guarantee she wouldn't use correction based training. Mel.

Another Vaccination Question

Codiene is an anti-tussive but you'll need to talk to your Vet about that. Morgan is right into naturopathic remedies- might pay to PM her. Mel. -
Royal Canin Or Hills For Puppy With Arthritis
Staff'n'Toller replied to morphjk's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Is it Hills J/d? btw that is a prescription diet form, not the regular science diet. The Large Breed Puppy has less protein etc but I don't believe it has glucosamine or any other added supplements....I will go check tomorrow. If I am right they don't start adding supplements until the Senior diet. You may want to check the price comparison of RC to Hills Prescription. It may also be cheaper to use something like Joint Guard powder with regular food. If you want to use mobility support- then find a Vet who stocks it OR who will get it in for you, we only have Hills out the front but we are very happy to order in any other brand that our clients request. If your Vet won't do it find somewhere that will- it's not difficult to get the food in. Cheers, Mel.
