Long Term Medicating For Extreme Storm Anxiety
Staff'n'Toller replied to pipppy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If it is Clomicalm then please proceed with caution before you start. The problem is that alot of Vets dish it out because they can, when it really must be combined with a behaviour modification program/desensitisation program to get the full benefits. Quite often dogs and cats go on it and get good results, that eventually wane over the months without changing the dogs association to the fearful stimulus whilst the drugs are working. Clomicalm can also permanently alter chemicals in the brain. Please ask your Vet for a Veterinary Behaviourist Referral, if you want to PM me I can tell you where they are in your State. I know for sure because I have been told first hand, that there are other drugs and combinations of drugs that work more effectively than Clomicalm for phobias and anxiety. If this anxiety is escalating, you may be doing your dog a big disservice by not seeing a Veterinary Behaviourist. Mel. -
Sentinel + Frontline?
Staff'n'Toller replied to Poodle wrangler's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A bit of overkill- order Interceptor it's cheaper than Sentinel and continue to use the frontline or advantix. -
Yep see your Vet to check the anal glands, I just found a very early tumour in one of my dogs anal glands whilst cleaning them out, so it's always good for the Vet to have a look. Mel.

For a Newfy male- I think you'd be looking at 200-250, probably closer to 200.. Hernia 30-50 extra. Some clinics charge for pain killers on top, depending on the Castration cost, some charge more for the Castration to account for the drugs used. You may also be quoted for Castration that includes a non-steroidal analgesic, but you may be offered an opioid (much stronger) analgesic to be given before surgery. Worth the extra IMO. Mel. Edited because I thought it was a female.

Puppy Pre-school Teacher Hates Sentinel Spectrum..
Staff'n'Toller replied to Beks's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Basically it works quite well if you only have one dog at home, or all dogs are being given Sentinel. If you have a cat, they need to be on program injection (same drug) or an adulticide (frontline, advantage etc.) It doesn't guard against hitchhiker fleas but if you read the largest study on fleas in Australia by Dermatologists, the rate of hitchhiker fleas is very very low. Ask the nurse if she's actually qualified - she should have been given the study at school! Mel. -
Entire Male Occasional Wetting While Sleeping

Ditto to the above post- check his prostate and if there are problems you have some options whilst he's still youngish. -
I am in Melbourne and we sell the Kramar brand with the divider included- by special order. Mel.

Sorry perhaps I misinterpreted your first post. We don't take out baby teeth unless they are causing a problem. You always have the liberty of requesting that the Vet phone you whilst the surgery is in progress to ask your permission for any extra procedures, and you can also request that they call you with a total cost before you get there (or generally they can tell you when you call in the afternoon for a progress report). Mel.

I've only trained one protection dog with qualified and experienced trainers and I can pick holes everywhere in your 'methods'. I can't believe you wouldn't want to go learn from the Pro's, protection training is not just straightforward, it's very 3-Dimensional depending on the dog you have. You may not see it now, but you are creating a dangerous dog, nothing that you are currently doing is creating safeguards for yourself or the dog. Mel.

I've never worked at a Vet Clinic where they didn't charge extra for those things- you can't do it yourself, you're paying for the Vet's expertise to do so. I think the all important word there was IF she needed them done, does she have hind dew claws? Because these days we tend to leave the front ones on. Also if there's a tooth (generally a canine) that has been pushed aside, will not come out of it's own accord, and will cause decay to the new permanent tooth then you wouldn't want to have to pay an extra anaesthetic to have it removed in another few months would you? Mel.

Film Slr Lenses On Digital Slrs
Staff'n'Toller replied to Purple Julie's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
I know someone who had a Pentax 35mm SLR and bought a Pentax DSLR purely because he wanted to use an existing lens he had. Mel. -
Interesting info about the Li Ion batteries- thanks! I've been told by a JB HiFi chick (who I know has worked there for quite a while) to buy the generic one as a spare for my 400D, she said there is no difference between that and the canon batteries except for about $40. Mel.

Maybe UTI or Kidneys or Incontinence, good idea to take her to the Vet. Mel. -
Clicker Training
Staff'n'Toller replied to shellbyville's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yes it is effective for show training, but free shaping can be very hard work for a dog. Mel. -
Your dog doesn't 'hate' the Vet, dogs don't hate for a start. Your dog is fearful of the Vet Clinic and the Vet, and probably traffic as well, and it won't improve unless you make it your priority to visit there for hello visits as often as possible and de-sensitise her to it.

I have a Canon 400D now, but my first digital was a fuji finepix S5000 (still have it) and I took it overseas with a wide lens, and up to Darwin, also had a friend take it to Darwin and get great shots too. It's only 4mp 10x zoom so it's a bit ancient now but it takes nice still and macro shots. I have been very tempted to get the fuji upgrade as a point and shoot as it's so easy and 9.5 times out of ten you get great shots with it. I also like the chunkiness of it. Mel.

Help With Behavioural Issues- Dog Toileting Inside
Staff'n'Toller replied to Ker's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Nature's Gift is the better of the canned foods but Pal is just slosh- you can tell her I said that. Neither of those is what I would consider feeding a dog 'well' and no wonder he has anal gland problems! His poo will not be firm enough to clear the anal glands on the way out. She needs to look at putting him on a super premium dry food- Royal Canin, Eagle Pack- even Eukanuba or Hills would be better than what he is getting now! Mel. -

Lots of carbohydrate will result in more poo! Agree with Nekhbet, she should find a very good quality dry and that side of it should help her case a little. -

Dr Cam Day is in Brisbane, she should probably give him a call or send an email and perhaps he can help her further. ETA: Sounds quite odd, but of course this is obviously only one facet of the dogs' behaviour. Mel. -
Just looking for a Preschool run by a trainer with a good reputation around Richmond or down towards the Peninsula that may have vacancies coming up soon. Dog is 12 weeks now. Thanks, Mel.

Very Worried - 6 Month Old Puppy
Staff'n'Toller replied to hortfurball's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Good food will help with thickening up the bones etc. but what is there - is there - genetically. Poodlefan's completely correct though, I always do the 2 x 20min exercise per day rule with my pups. ;) If she is totally over the top then it's time for training, training games and thinking toys like stuffed kongs, buster cube/treat ball, dig pits etc. Mel. ;) -

Your Vet can certainly do some range of motion exercises and get an idea of the movement in the hips. Get some X-Rays done, it will ease your mind about it, if it's bad news, then you'll be able to put an action plan into place. Mel.
