  1. I can also vouch for Budget Pet Products - great prices and service. Once you are on the mailing list, you get updates of when products are on special too. :)
  2. So sorry to hear this Ash. RIP little Smudge.
  3. Wow these are really neat - what a great idea.
  4. I'm so sorry - what a horrific thing to see and to cope with. I hope this person or persons are caught and dealt with.
  5. This is in interesting topic. When my family purchased our great danes and mini schnauzer over the years, we advised the breeder that we were after a pet and we were not going to show or breed, and advised the breeders to pick out a puppy that was suitable for our situation. I don't regard breeders as you only go to one if you want a show dog. I look at (responsible) breeders as a place to get the type of dog that will fit your situation pet or show knowing that all health checks have been done and all the other things that you would expect from a responsible breeder. There is not enough information out there in general public land about using a registered responsible breeder for a pet dog. Many people decide on a breed and then go through pet shops or ads like gumtree and end up with a byb puppy. More needs to be done to advertise what a registered breeder can do and does do - but I'm not sure how to get that info out. I always advise people who are after a puppy to do the research and find a registered breeder. Some listen and others don't and get a puppy from the classifieds or from a pet shop. Let's face it, "pet" dogs are the majority of dogs and generally the ones that cause the problems in the community - so we need to somehow get info across about the benefits of using a responsible, registered breeder.
  6. Love these photos grumpette - your dogs are just adorable.
  7. Bora Bora, neat Tahiti. It was amazing! Interestingly, the dogs feet weren't very tight at all. There was a fair bit of space between their toes. It made me wonder if their feet had adapted due to all the swimming or maybe it's just the way they are anyway there. Not dog photos, but pics showing the stunning water. I do have a few other dogs pics but they're upsetting. Dogs aren't highly valued over there which is why this scenario was just so random. One of the girls had just had some mammary cancers removed. I lightly suggested desexing but he looked at me blankly so I left it, comforted that at the very least his dogs get vet treatment, unlike the majority there. Feeding the stingrays which kept rubbing themselves all over everyone. Apparently they're very affectionate. Sharks circling Perhaps their toes had more space from walking on soft sand a lot of the time. Gorgeous photos what a beautiful place.
  8. This has got to be the life for any dog, or human. Wow fit, healthy, happy dogs just living the dream.
  9. Hi OP, I have a dobe x rottie who used to be wonderful in dog parks until she reached maturity and had a few incidents with smaller dogs and like you, my girl discovered the value in chasing these smaller dogs. I don't go to off leash dog parks. I am lucky to be able to use smaller fenced in pens at St Ives showgrounds, where dogs can run in peace away from other dogs. She is great with most bigger dogs and is no problem at all amongst any dog if they are all on lead. I often walk around my mum's retirement village with the residents and their smaller (and usually older) little dogs and there is never an issue. I have learnt to do different things with my dog - we do obedience, have now got our Rally title, I run with her (she is a great jogging partner), we go to cafes with no problem, I take her to my son's rugby games and never an issue (most people adore her and she has always loved interacting with people). It is only off lead that there is an issue and I will never allow anything to happen (as much as I can control it). I agree totally with what everyone else is saying here - there is lots to do without going to off leash dog parks. They are not the be all and end all. In fact they have many risks and you have to weigh up those risks. With so many ignorant people that use these parks, I believe they are really only for the happy go lucky dogs, as I've seen and heard of too many incidents. Good luck with Carter - what a gorgeous looking boy.
  10. That is incredibly scary! To steal dogs out of yards is bad enough but to try and steal one from the owner's possession like that is gobsmacking Owners were obviously very upset - what is happening out there with these dogs that are stolen? And why would they steal a husky - I didn't they would be considered "fighting" dogs Huskis have a think coat protecting the skin, teaches young dogs to bite and hold better and as you ca see in the you tube clip their is a lot of movement with skin and coat, when a lock jaw dog latches they don't usually go for a better grip, A huski may be able to maneuver a counter attack (defense) this teaches the dog to be weary of where it's opponent is and adjust accordingly. Small dogs are used to provoke the fighting dog into an attack, pig and rabbits are also used but the small dog promotes the idea of attacking it's own kind. Not all of these dogs are eager just to attack another dog more often or not they are worked into it. BC, retrievers, labs, huskis and similar even staffys are the next step. A docile friendly dog teaching the fighter the defense of it's opponent and go go after dog bigger than it's self. These dogs are also some times mussled to prevent injury or fear in the fighting dog. GS, Rotties, ect usually mussled usually have a fearless reaction to aggression and a fight back reaction teaching the fighter not to back away. Training a fighter dog may take months and require the use of possible 10 or more training opponents. I saw a very very old documentary on it based out of china and mexico that was decades old but I assume they haven't adjusted too many of their techniques. When someone uses the term, 'lock jaw dog' I know to ignore what they say. I was about to come up with something similar, also regarding the other things Angeluca said but as you've already stated... Best ignore it. Be ignorant I don't really care I was stating what I saw it a VERY OLD DOCUMENTARY back when the term LOCK jaw was used for bull breeds. I know there is no such thing. Just because you own the type of dog most use as fighters Doesn't mean other who don't own that particular breed, don't know what they are talking about. Maybe it's your ignorance is why people (NOT MYSELF) think there is a type of owner that owns those breeds I think the term is Bogan? Not to offend bull breed owners just an example of a ignorant statement. The 3 bull bred dog I know are owned by dignified Ladies. I think what the poster was trying to say is not lock jaw but these dogs don't let go. I've read a number of times on this site where people carry a heavy stick to prise the jaws open of an attacking dog as they can't get the dog to release - these dogs have been bully breeds. We all know there is no such thing as "lock jaw" but bully breeds don't let go once attached- that is what I think the meaning of the term is.
  11. I agree and the other huge problem is easy access to making a quick buck - internet sales. Stop selling puppies/dogs on internet sites like gumtree and you cut off a vital selling tool. I wonder how many people would still backyard breed, if they had to pay to advertise to sell their puppies - ie. take an add in the local newspaper or put up for sale notices on community noticeboards. It would be a lot harder to sell them I bet. It's so easy to have a litter and then sell on the internet. Take that away and people would think twice.
  12. What an adorable little dog and her owner is certainly doing a great job with her positive training. Well done.
  13. Agree Wobbly, and another way is to stop all advertising of dogs via gumtree and similar. You should only be allowed to get a dog via a registered ethical breeder and from adoption. What we don't need are the morons out there, getting hold of these dogs and making a quick buck on the internet from selling the pups (usually to other morons). Pet shops also to stop selling dogs. And of course the punishment for any dog attack needs to be drastically increased - jail terms, huge fines, the victim being allowed to sue the crap out of the moron owners etc. Until we get a few people actually going to jail, losing their homes etc because they fail to do the right thing, we will continue to have attacks. People would think twice before owning these dogs if they knew they would be prosecuted if something happened.
  14. Totally agree with you. What I can't understand that there are some posters on here saying that these dogs could have been any breed, but blind freddy can see that they were bully breeds of some description.
  15. I think what the general public mean when they say "pit bull" they mean a bully breed - doesn't matter if it is a cross or a purebred bull breed. To Joe Public a pit bull may be a stafford, amstaff, bulldog, pit bull, aussie bulldog, american bulldog etc or a cross of these breeds and those types dominate the stats in these horrific attacks. And to some people a pit bull is a type of dog. Even regarded dog people sometimes cannot always pick a 'pit bull' from amstaffs or their crosses. I hope the two people involved heal quickly and the dogs are destroyed and the owner is punished severely.
  16. Couldn't agree more here - I also have a dog that has some issues due to having 3 little fluffies go for her and I wouldn't allow her to go back at them - I did though, I hoofed them away. Up until then she had no issues with small dogs. It is never funny and a dog is a dog is a dog regardless of size, breed etc and all should be treated as such.
  17. I agree - I don't like them but then again it's only because I've only seen the idiots using them. My neighbours were out on a family walk with their small dog using a retractable lead and it shot straight out onto the road and was killed - in front of the whole family! It was on a lead going for a walk and was run over - stupid. If they had used a normal lead, the dog would still be alive and the young children would now not be traumatised.
  18. Yes he also has a oodle of some sort - Margie is sometimes walking the dog at the same park that I go too.
  19. Hi, I had a small section of my yard laid with top-of-the-range, guaranteed to "never be pulled/dug up" artificial lawn. It was great for 6 months, then one day, I came home to find it has been ripped up in parts. The warranty meant the company came back and repaired it, which they did and very quickly. Then a day or two later, the same thing, but in a different area. Again they came back and repaired it. Then the next day it was again ripped up - this time they said they would have to charge me for any more repairs. They also changed their advertising material and took out the section about it being guaranteed to never be pulled/dug up. It cost me $2600 for a small section and it is still there in parts - looking awful now.
  20. I agree with you here - the Glasshouse candles are just wonderful (I love the vanilla caramel one). You don't even have to light them and they fill the room with an amazing aroma. Certainly gets rid of any doggy (or other) odours.
  21. I'm also with Bow Wow Meow, and have been for a few years now and they have been great - I get an text message a few days after I send in my claim to say they have received it, and within approx 10 days, the claim has been paid to my account. Worth every cent I believe.
  22. Happy 10th Birthday - I bet those years just flew by too!!
  23. Have just seen this - so sorry for your loss Nic. Run free Annie
