  1. At the boarding kennels i work at we are always asking pet owners why theior dogs arnt desexed, the most common answers are i havent gotten around to it or the dog isnt old enough... some are 4 or 5 yrs old.... crappy responses, some even look at u to suss u out then respond so u just know they are thinking of breeding but know they will get an ear full and shut the hell up...
  2. my boy love wings and at work we have fed them to shepherds and wiemaranas - sorry spelling??, all with no problems maybe just supervise the first few times u feed to make sure they are chewing then adn not swallowing whole hahaha should be finr thoug !! very good for teeth
  3. Ellz - i agree the double sides are more for bulk thinning then creating more natural lines so from what Koalablue has described the single thinners would be a better choice as they will be cutting less hair Beautiful cockers by the way... hehe... i want one lol - bad Alice is a sweetie good luck with her this yr
  4. Ellz I would be looking at the pre made BARF patties as i believe they have offal in them and that way if u feed one patty a week (assuming u would have to check to packet to make sure there is enough offal in the one patty for the week that is) U could do the rest of the meal as regular RMB and mince and what not and not have to worry about getting ur hands on the gross bits lol.. i know there is offal in the patties, the only problem is making sure there is enough for a weeks required percentage to feed only one pattie a week - or if u can afford it u could just feed the patties and RMB everyday.. i am too poor for this option though lol Just another option though u have probably already thought of it
  5. As for cleaning i know it might sound strange but go to the supermarket and buy some BIOZET laundry powder, dilute it and rub onto the surface - it mights be easier in ur case as it is a regular occurance to make it in a spray bottle?? and as it is a laundry powder u can wash hi bedding in it in the morning i have a kitten and the breeder says for toilet trianing it will eliminate the smell so the kitten doesnt go there again... amd i have wash my dogs bedding in there is is excellent for removing odors... with the carpet alwasy wipe over it again with a damp cloth(fresh water) and then dry with a towel or somthing - experiment what works for u
  6. Hot spots can be cause from the area being too wet and moist so a fungal infection of the skin takes hold. This is common in labs and goldens for this reason i doont know about ur kids but i have never met a lab or a golden that will walk past a puddle without jumping in it lol, and if they are wet in the same area alot and not dried properly afterwards - ie was swimming at the beach or something so u dont exactly pull out the dryer for that one lol then the spot can become a hot spot. Washing in malaseb is a great idea , and did the vet clip around the area?? if not do this as it will allow the skin to dry out better and also after the daily washes make sure u dry them REALLY well afterwards, Maybe avoid swimming for a little while until they are all healed up?? and best of all over the warmer months once a week do a quick check over ur dogs as a preventitive or early discovery method - best places to look are all around the neck the legs and underneath the tail. Try to watch ur babies as well cause the creams and what not cant work if the dog licks them off if they are licking heaps and u cant stop them then try an elizabethian collar - sorry if i spelt that wrong hehe hope that helps
  7. bigger dogs are harder as their nails are like concrete!! but for little dogs i tend to just tell them off.. and i DO NOT accept mouthing or biting! setting urself up for trouble if u allow this. Being a groomer i have to be strict otherwise i will get bitten or mouthed a billion times a day!! If i am getting bitten i hold the dogs mouth shut for a second and say no then release and continue usually only takes maybe twice and they see that they are not to bite, some will still try it on but at this stage i just make a loud noise like arrgghh or dont u dare and look away sheepishly like sorry i only have one really bad dog for feet and the owner has been working on playing with his feet and in 3 months he has gone from not able to touch his feet unless there was three people holding him down (he is a westie sized dog!) and now i can say paw and he hands me his foot and away we go Some dogs are harder of course - as for ur danes nails try doing them in the bath or right after as the water will soften them, if u need them done and u are not bathing them soak them for a little while should hep u get through then easy peasy and as said earlier sometimes if u put pressure on the dogs nails with ur hands the pressure from the clippers seems less and the dog will be less affected by it.
  8. i was told if they are just warts then u can have them removed by a vet or like i do on the bad ones - tie horse hair arounf the base and they fall off... then i just use tee tree oil spray on it - am looking at ways to stop them groing back though - thats the hard part lol
  9. OMG CHEEKY MONKEY!! he is looking at the camera like look what i did mummy im so clever! hahahahaha
  10. Hrmm my boy is 15 this yr and his eyes are nealry shot he has has cataracts slowly progressing for about 6 yrs now so u have a while to go if he is a battler like mine! he is loosing his hearing now so we cant let him off lead as much if he gets too far away i worry and i dont want him near roads as he doesnt hear the traffic Going strong though at his age im lucky he is still here at all!

Im thinking of making the plunge into raw for my old boy 15 this yr and still going strong! he is a wire coated JRT bitsa this and Bitsa that hahaha He loves his necks and bits for breakie but i think i will struggle with removing his RC dry as i will worry that at his age if i stuff up the feedig raw i will kill the poor baby Stupid i know. Fingers crossed after a while i can give it the flick... like it was once called in here at arounf page 3 or 4 - days ago for me reading lol dry kibble is like the old convienient friend lol Thanks heaps Yellow this thread is an ode to ur love of ur babies anything i cna add specific for arthrits? poor old boys back legs are on the way out ETA: i will be using vegies much to thomas' dusgust lol but i want to be sure and i know that he loves a bit of veg as well and i like to keep him happy Any specific recipes anyone wants to share for their veg?? i was thinking i would make a mix of whats currently in season and add the liver and kidney in there as well as i know he doesnt like it, and the egg as well
  12. Hrmm that is scarey! when u go to the vet if it does turn out to be heat stroke maybe ask him if there is something u could keep in the first aid kit that might be useful?? i dont know, hopefully it is nothing too serious Hugs for ur girl ;)

  14. I am a groomer and the scissors should be more like 38 bucksish?? and tyra20007 is correct it will alter the coat slightly especially if it is a common occurance otherwise if ur not bothered about the coat changing then yes they will do fine
  15. Showdog - hahaha we realised when i went to pick my friend up at Ivanhoe and checked the weather policy to see if it was still running lol went to the KCC show but didnt get there until champ in shows were on!! Everyone did really well!! i was a bit dissapointed in the turn out- though i think the weather is to blame ;) I got sunburnt

  19. Hey all, Im also a dog groomer. I am in my second yr at a grooming course - its a certificate 4 in pet grooming, we learn pet clips and breed clips and have had some lovely and most helpful breeders bring in their dogs and demo breed standards and some hae even let us groom their dogs who are not in show. I also work as a groomer and have been for about a yr now. i am in tlaks at the moment with the owners to take over the grooming side of the business - we are a boarding kennels and cattery as well. I think that without my course and yrs experience there is no way i could have handled the take over - NO WAY. As it is i am getting as much help as i can trying to work out how to cover costs but not charge through the roof... i am llucky i dont have rent but i do have a fee per dog for use of bath and dryer - saves me having to buy them and pay for servicing As others have said it is not something to take on lightly... u shouls def IMO look at working in the industry first i have had my fair share of bites and horrible dogs - one we reported the owner to the RSPCA, owners are sometimes very hard to please and wont want to listen and its not always fluffy puppies having a fun bath, playing in the bubbles. I love grooming and i cant imagine doing anything else, it is so rewarding - but pls dont get too involved without testing the waters first!!! i also get may fixup jobs and sometimes cant believe the state the other groomer has sent the dog home in... Cheers Kirst

  24. I recently did my assignment on parvo - a dog can still catch it the vaccine is like the flu vacc and canine cough - there are many strains and the vacc covers the worst and most common strains but not all its shed via dropping for up to month can live on surfaces - such as soils and backyards for over a yr one study suggested over 3 yrs is possible in the right conditions. it is fairly rare to catch for a vaccinated dog though. ETA: sorry Jed i dont have my references anymore i handed in the assignment and all research and what not is with the teacher now but what u have about symptomatic and what not is correct they are contagious and should be kept away from public areas - especially away fro pups
