If they are on the "banned" list, how can there be so many for sale in Australia....if this site/link is legit ?? http://albany-wa.australialisted.com/animals/press-dogo-agentino-puppies-ready-for-sale_17455117.html This was one of at least 5 ads I sw I came across this when I googled the breed to see what they actually looked like after reading this thread. The scarey part is how "cheap" they are....$450 Nice looking dogs though and agree'd, they look much nicer with natural ears.

Oh no that's so sad for all concerned. Maybe you could ask if you could put this message on the NSW BB Club's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TheBritishBulldogClubOfNswInc I hope you find her and I hope that your friend pulls through and that Dan and he can be reunited again.

OMG.... who ever was videoing that did an amazing job, because I would not have been able to hold the camera steady, as I would have been pmsl at that. That is just gold !!!

Some big home truths re having the right frame of mind can make all the difference It's been a while since my last show outing but hopefully I'll be back in the ring again soon and can put the great tips into practice. Congrats to all of you above who have "converted" and reaped the rewards....well done !!!!

I have two of those breeds, being the French & British Bulldogs, but I have to confess to only having had "one" litter of Frenchy's in four years and am yet to have a litter of BB's, much to my disgust in getting it "just right" lol. I'm not surprised when I read my May Gazette the other day, only to see that the litter registrations for French Bulldogs in January was a whopping 22 litters !!!, higher than Labs, Staffy's German Shepherds, Border Collies etc - I had to go a count them all for myself I must get at least 3 or 4 emails per weeks asking if I have any French Bulldog pups available. I haven't had any for BB's but then I don't have a separate breeder listing for them on DOL so that might have something to do with it lol Way to go Troy, these are a living, breathing animal that feel sadness, pain and emotions just like we do....not some status symbol that's currently in vogue, only to find itself on the "that's so 5 minutes ago" pile when the next fad arrives .

Having used Jet Pets on numerous occasions, I have to say that I'm more than happy to recommend them. They work with you every step of the way and communication has never been a issue during the trip. I'm located near Orange and have sent & received Frenchie pups to Nth Qld and received our Iggy from SA with zero hiccups. It can't hurt to give them a call to see whats involved etc :)

I thought I'd have a go at this This is one of my gorgeous Iggy "Nino", enjoying the warm afternoon sunshine a couple of weeks ago.

OMG I'm so sorry to be reading this RIP Willow (((hugs))) to all involved

Question About French Bulldog Pricing
Affirmation replied to Chris the Rebel Wolf's topic in General Dog Discussion
This thread caught my eye and I felt the urge to add my "two bob's" worth :D The current pricing for this wonderful breed has increased but then I think you'll find most breeds prices have increased recently. It would be interesting to have a table of breeds with their current prices to compare Frenchies with. Three years ago when I was looking for a Frenchie there were hardly any litters on DOL and the price for puppies was around $2500. A year later when we were looking for another, the price had increased to $3000 with some up to $4000 along with an increase in litters available on DOL. Having said that, 8 to 10 years ago they were around the $1250 - $1500. They are a popular breed so the demand is there atm. If someone is prepared to spend this amount for a dog (what ever the breed), then one would think they would really look after and treasure their new family member.....I know I do -
Great topic For what it's worth, I feel we as breeders can put alot of potential "new exhibitors" off by putting them through the third degree when they enquire about obtaining a puppy to show. I know that we have a duty of care to make sure our precious puppies go to suitable homes, but when breeders refuse to sell puppy's on the main register it can make obtaining a puppy to show "all too hard". Again, with the animosity amongst breeders for what ever reason, can also make potential "newcomers" think twice about getting involved in our hobby when they're told "don't buy from so & so, they have crap dogs" etc etc. I've met some great people whilst showing but of course I've also had my share of rude and arrogant people. They need to realise that we're not competing for "sheep stations", and that their dogs will get beaten sometimes. Thats what keeps it interesting, if the same dog won everytime you wouldn't bother wasting your precious time & money competing. If you can't accept being beaten from time to time, then maybe this isn't the hobby for you. Another thing thats lacking sometimes is good sportsmanship. If you get beaten, accept that decision with good grace and congratulate the winners....it doesn't cost anything to do that. I was at a show last weekend, where other exhibitors thought that they'd give me "their opinion" on my dogs. They didn't comment on the dogs good attributes, but told me everything that was "wrong" with my dogs. I'm sorry, but I didn't ask for their opinions and as I tell my kids, if you've got nothing nice to say, then don't say anything. I've also noticed that around the rings, people shut themselves off to the public or other "prying eyes" by enclosing themselves in their cabana's. It doesn't portray a "welcoming" atmosphere, especially for the general public who make the effort to come and watch our dogs. Unfortunately "face judging" will always be an element in our sport. As exhibitors, we can show those judges our thoughts by NOT entering where they are judging. Kennel Clubs make their money from the entries and if numbers are down those particular judges will not get many appointments. I show purely to have fun and maybe pull off a win although I'm the "feather duster more often than I am a Rooster" lol. I have met and made some great friends and at the end of the day I get to take the "best" dogs home again. My daughter is just starting out showing and she had a great time last weekend with the other kids & she also got to take home a few ribbons which are now proudly blu-tac'd on the wall behind her bed. Isn't that what showing is all about ?? At the end of the day breeders need to be more pro-active with encouraging their puppy buyers to join their states local Canine Council and have fun showing their dogs. I firmly believe that neutered/spayed dogs should be allowed to compete in the same classes alongside entire dogs, especially as we're only judging a dogs conformation against the breed standard - just because a dog has two "apparently normal testicles" doesn't make it stud material. Lets be honest, we've all seen stunning examples of a breed that are desexed and in pet homes that would wipe the floor in the show ring, so why not allow them to compete. It would surely increase numbers. For me, I'll keep showing while I'm still having fun and when the fun has gone I'll stop going. I don't do hundreds of miles chasing shows as I hate driving so when there are shows close enough to home I'll go to those. Some people IMO develope unhealthy obsessions chasing points and judges & I think they are the ones who spoil it for the rest of us.

Congrats Joan

Oh bum Elise, you should have tripped me over . Sounds like Hudson had a great weekend too !!! We won a tuff tub bucket so not so good to sleep in/on but good to carry stuff in We had a great weekend, despite the weather trying to "dampen" our fun lol. My daughter Erynn kept the ice-cream man busy and I have to say that the committee were awesome, they always had a smile on their faces and were very obliging, so three cheers for them and also a big thankyou to the ring stewards who kept us entertained whilst we waited for our classes. Are you off to Orange & Young shows Elise? If so we might finally meet lol
-
Congrats Elyse & Hudson on your win. We didn't get to meet but I'm sure we'll catch up one day I'd like to add my little brag My British Bulldog went RUBIG (& Aus bred in group) under Miss C Stuart at Forbes Show yesterday 16/10/2011. I was sooooooo proud of my (not so little anymore) Earl !!! :D

Those FX trailers look good, seem to have loads of space for all your bits and pieces. I had a 4 berth Trek many moons ago and sold it in 2004 as we bought a Olympic horse float to do the horse thing and I used the float for both hobbies. I now have a horse float that has a caravan section in the front so camping is never a problem and there's plenty of space in the horse area for crates for the dogs, although my Iggy sleeps in with me lol. If your looking to be spending $15 - $20k for a trailer, maybe consider a horse float, as it can also double as a great "gazebo" :D It won't be long before they will be making purpose built goosenecks with dog & human accomodation. They are becoming hugely popluar with the horsie fraternity. Happy trailer hunting !!

I hope they got my entries , be horrible to drive over this afternoon and set up camp only to find out they didn't receive them I've left a message for Janet on her phone to let me know, but I've been told she's not been well so I hope she feels better soon, I hate being a pest. Weather forecast as of today 13/10/2011 Temp 8-25 degree's with a possible afternoon shower Friday 12-26 degrees partly cloudy & isolated showers. Chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon & or evening. Winds averageing 15 to 30km/h becoming lighter in the afternoon. Saturday 12-28 degrees. Partly cloudy with the chance of isolated showers & or possible thunderstorms from late morning to late afternoon. Winds 15 to 25km/h Sunday 11-22 degrees. SUNNY !!!! with winds averaging 15 to 25km/h. This could all change though lol, you know what those weather forecasters are like. Basically, bring clothes for summer and winter, gum boots and rain coats, that should cover it lol Hopefully .....see you there, I don't know many of you but I'll have a British Bulldog and an Iggy so if you see me, say hi Sue PS Woohoo, just heard back from Janet and it's all good, I'm in !!
-
I'll be there. I hope the weather is better too, but it doesn't look overly promising looking at the forecast - Friday, a few showers, Saturday, a shower or two and the same again for Sunday. At least the temps will be up in the low 20's. Last year at Forbes, the wind just about blew the whole show to Tasmania so fingers crossed that it doesn't make an appearance this weekend. Are you camping ?? I'm camping 2 or 3 nights (still deciding whether to head over on the Thursday arvo to get a spot ringside lol) They usually have good numbers from memory, it's a fun show I have a British Bulldog so I shouldn't be to hard to find, just look for the horse float - it has living quarters lol. See you there !!!!!

Greater Western Show - Kelso This Weekend
Affirmation replied to stonecutter's topic in General Dog Discussion
Good luck to everyone competing this weekend . I wasn't concentrating and missed the closing date "doh" but I will come over for a looksee as I am dropping our daughter to "Nanna's" for a visit (they live in Bathurst). I hope the weather behaves itself and turns on the sunshine and warmer temps for you all - especially for the brave people camping !!! -
1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) New owner of this breed & amazed at how friendly and outgoing this boy is, especially as he's 6 months old 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? They are an ancient breed, with a dog resembling the modern day IG found in a 6,000 year old Egyptian tomb. There are also carvings and paintings of them on the walls of the pyramids. Although they are a "sight hound" they are classified in the "Toy" group and make wonderful companions, who take their job of being a "lap dog" very seriously. 3. How common is it in Australia? I believe their popularity is starting to rise, so more puppies are becoming available. At present the general public don't realise that they are actually a seperate breed & consequently confuse them for Whippets. 4. What is the average lifespan? Around 12 to 15 years. 5. What is the general temperament/personality? My puppy is very confident and will happily interact with people and other dogs, which I think is a huge testiment to his breeder, in the way he was socialised as a puppy. Some though, can be quite shy and timid but once you have their trust they will follow you to the ends of the earth. 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? They are an active dog who love to play, and they will happily exercise themselves inside or out. They do well with a daily walk if thats your thing, but they don't require a huge backyard. They do however, feel the cold & heat so this needs to be taken into consideration if they are going outside. They love their jumpers and coats which are a "must have" in the colder months. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? I feel that they would be a good choice, as they are low maintenance with regard to grooming, feeding and exercise etc. If you are a "first time" dog owner, regardless of breed you "must" do your research before you invite a puppy into your home. I'm always irked when I see advertisements for puppies that read " will make a great Christmas present". A dog is a living, breathing, intelligent animal and should never be something bought on impulse. A dog is for life and as this breed can live till for 15+ years, it is vital that this is taken into account BEFORE you commit to inviting one into your family. 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? Dogs are a "pack" animal, so being alone is not something they tolerate well. I believe that no dog (regardless of breed) should be left alone for extended period of time. Some breeds are able to entertain themselves but in my opinion, the IG is not one of those. 9. How much grooming is required? The IG has a very short, thin coat so they don't require much in the way of grooming. A wipe over with a damp cloth once or twice a week will help to remove loose hair. Their toenails however, grow rapidly and need to be trimmed every few weeks. Care also needs to be taken with regard to their teeth as they build up tarter quite quickly, so weekly brushing or a chew toy designed to keep teeth clean is a wise investment. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? They are a gentle breed on the whole, and would suit visiting nursing homes to brighten up the day for the residents, but they are also a very fragile breed, so should never be left alone with small children for their own safety and wellbeing. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? The Italian Greyhound can be prone to Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) which is an inherited disease of the retina in dogs, in which the eyes are genetically programmed to go blind. Any dogs which are to be kept for breeding should be tested for this disease prior to mating. Generally both parents need to be carriers of this defective gene for it to show itself in the offspring, but ethically any dog found to carry the gene should never be bred with and neutered or spayed. It is not a painful disease but with careful breeding, is one that can be prevented. They can also be prone to knee/stifle problems where the groove in the bone where the tendon sits is too shallow which then allows the knee cap to dislocate easliy. This does cause the animal pain, but can be relatively easy to fix with a small operation where the groove is made deeper. 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Perspective puppy buyers should ask the breeder if they test their breeding dogs for PRA and ask to see the results of the parents of the litter they are looking at. The acceptable result for PRA is that each dog is "clear" of the gene. To sum up, the Italian Greyhound makes a wonderful companion, which loves being with it's "human". If your looking for a dog that will enjoy sitting on the lounge with you, sharing your bed at night and enjoys spending time playing in the outdoors while you garden, then this could be the breed for you.

I hope your puppy will pull through for you all. I can't believe a "breeder " would knowingly ship an animal from their premises with a current outbreak of Parvo Thats go beyond belief . There are so many dishonest people out there, even people who are "professionals" (I'll use that term loosely) who's livelyhood depends on their clients being happy with the "product", who will rip you off without thinking twice about it. All I can say is Karma will come back to bite them.....big time. I hope you can get a satisfactory outcome Beladoza, with minimal cost and stress to you. Hopefully the breeder concerned will have an attack of conscience and do the "right" thing for their dogs and their purchasers. And Yes, I do think that unless they have a very good reason for their lack of communication between yourselves and others here that have been "touched" they should have their membership priviledges on DOL revoked. Please let us know how it goes for you, and you puppy.

I know it's a special massage type therapy that a lady who's surname was Tellington and she is from the USA. It was used alot on horses. If you google Tellington Tough Therapy you should be able to find out lots more. There is a lady in Grafton that does it, so she may know of someone closer to you. They had great results with horses. Best of luck with it

I've given CPR to a couple of newborn puppies. One took 10 minutes to finally take a breath on its own, but it was fine after that with no obvious deficites from being resusitated Just got to use soft breaths on puppies as you don't want to over inflate the lungs and risk bursting them. Cover their mouth and nose with your mouth and puff the air in. As for compressions, the heart is located just behind the front legs so again, gentle pushes to help circulate the blood. It's the best feeling when you bring it back to life

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions ;) . I was using the Purina Pro Plan puppy, and it seems to be ok, but I went and bought a small bag of the Royal Canin Medium on my way home yesterday, to see if they liked it, and they did , they loved the handful they shared between them. I must say that it smells very nice also, like a nice rich gravey, so I mixed a bit of it with their Pro Plan, so as to switch slowly. I'll let you know how they go on it. I just have to get the meat and cook some eggs to round it off. Since bringing one of these dogs home, they have definitely won a place in our family. They always manage to put a smile on your face, even if they did do something naughty. They are my most favourite breed and I wish I'd had them a long time ago .

More questions, sorry I have a few With regard to the feeding question and your answer regarding the raw meat, what do you find works best with this breed, and is it best to stick to that, or do you rotate between chicken, beef lamb etc to keep it interesting for them. Also is the feeding of fish benificial. Also what type of dry food works best for puppies and again the raw meat ?? Do you recommend crate training for feeding and sleeping etc and if so what is the best way to go about it without stressing everyone :D . Last but not least, where can you get the Oakwood shampoo you recommeded from . ;)

How on earth can an Aussie Shepherd (which isn't a huge dog ) cause over $3000 worth of damage to a patrol car :D , what was the car made of ??? plasticine.....fair suck of the sav. As the lady had called the Police to report she'd lost her dog, why didn't they go and get her so that she help could calm it down and catch it, or how about a tranquiliser gun. I'm sorry but I don't agree with what they did. Yes I know you'll all disagree, but sometimes these things happen to the best of us. Horses will jump out of stables where they normally housed, dogs will bust through windows if they think it's their only way of escape so we shouldn't be so quick to judge and preach. As for fireworks, they need to be banned full stop. Apart from dogs, how many horses or cattle get frightened by them and bust through fences trying to get away. Now if they'd run over a horse I could understand that kind of damage bill......the world is slowly but certainly losing it's grip on common sense here. Just wondering who they would've billed if the lady hadn't reported it to the police :D
