My 12 year old scuffs his feet while walking he sounds like he is wearing slippers. He is very healthy otherwise though he is slowing up he still likes to run through his tricks and chase a "dead" ball. Can anyone help explain this and should l be worried

Also consider - after the vet - taking her to a chiro. My little man was in a lot of pain - crying out when trying to get up & warning me off when l went to help him up. My vet - whom l love - prescribed pain relief only after x rays etc but he was still in pain. In desperation l took him to Robert Humphries who gently manipulated his neck and hip - voila, Immediate improvement! I burst into tears the affect was so immediate. 2 days of rest much improved able to get up with no help.

save my old dog from slipping on floors

Hi everyone. Thank you for your responses and sorry about delay ..the dreaded flu knocked me over. l appreciate your comments re mats, l have put long runner carpets and mats through the house, which are the main safety plan but he has, unfortunately, slipped on a small areas where mats couldn't cover. There are other areas that are of concern eg. smooth concrete and gaps near walls where mats are. He is a min poodle so as suggested l do keep him clipped as well as nails trimmed. In genereal he is good but l do have to momitor him while at home, thankfully because of age he does rest a lot and l crate him if l he is home without a human spervisor. Shekhina thank you for toe grip link they do look good and testimonials look really promising so l too will give them a try. Thank you everyone it wonderful to have a dog community site like Dogzonline to turn to. -
Hi, I too have an old dog who is losing muscle. I can only share what I do but like you I am always looking for further suggestions. I also have a younger dog and don't want to take one out without the other, my old darling still enjoys wandering around reading all the news that has been left in the park. My husband has built a cart from and old pram for him, which is a blessing, so that when I take him for a 'wander' ( that is all we can do) I can easily give him respite by putting him in the cart when he gets tired. It also helps me and my younger dog to get a good walk. I would love to give him regular hydro-therapy but cannot afford it. So, I have recently bought a child's swimming pool so that I can walk/float him, giving him a more gentle exercise than walking and or swimming. What I have learned putting up one of these, is that you need a clean base cover to put the pool onto as the weight of the water and him walking can push the little bits of grit/stone, on the ground, through the pool floor and cause a leak. The depth is also important as your dog needs to be able to float and support his/her body weight, creating a less strenuous exercise rather than swimming. The pool also needs to be kept clean to prevent slipping, which you can do with a filter. As he is little I only need a smaller pool which does not require a filter (and never are supplied) so I have discussed with the local pool people what is the safest cleaning product to use. I use a ball in a sockette tied to the end of a stick to encourage him to walk around the pool, that way I can monitor how much exercise he is getting and build on it and he gets more fun. Hope this is useful take what you want and discard the rest Thank you to the others who have mentioned Primal Paws, I will be researching this more Happy caring.

Hello., I am reaching out to everyone as I am desperate to find a solution to my old darling (16) slipping on wooden floors and tiles. I have runner rugs and various mats all over the house but as he is small he inevitably has ended up on the few areas that do not have coverings and has slipped pulling tendons. I want him to enjoy life as much as possible and be able to move around with confidence (him and me) so I am asking for anyone with experience of this issue for help and guidance. I have been looking at boots/socks but am getting confused with all the different products and issues involved with them e.g.. falling off, spinning around rubbing feet etc. Thank you.

Hi all, thank you so much for your responses. I have taught her to put her paws up into the car but I know I will have difficulty when she puts on weight, so would like her to jump in. Luke GSP, thank you for your input. I am having her checked out just in-case, though she is happy to jump into my 4WD not my daughters. I have done lots of hind end awareness exercises but as yet have not worked her over jumps, this is my next step after her check up. In the meantime I do use a step up for her. I will keep working on it. Thank you again.

Hi can someone give me a heads up on getting my Great Dane into the back of my vehicle? I have taught her to get onto a table successfully I can get her to get into my daughters car - which is lower than mine - but she generally wants to 'climb' rather than jump onto things. I have tried playing with her favourite toy and running to the table or car but she always props then tries to climb.

Can anyone tell me if there is a an appeal being started for the animals that have been affected by the fires? Cheers Macksmum -
Again thank you all for you wonderful tips and feed back. I will not use the Betadine. I have bought some Aveeno fragrance free, soothing relief, Moisture creem with Colloidal Oatmeal. Using the baby powder seems to be helping. I appreciate the tea remedy too, as I have used tea before for skin problems on my other dog. He is Black. the groomer said she used a 10# on him. What does fft stand for. I will be out of town for a couple of days Hope you all have a great weekend and thanks for your ideas.

Thank you Paplover and frufru,I really appreciate your suggestions. It is hard to watch him being so miserable. I have noticed that as well as redness/irritation on his tail he has redness on his sheath too which is causing him misery. Frufru, I spoke to a former groomer today and she suggested I use JJ babypowder (cornstarch). As I said I have been applying Betadine so I might add the powder after this. I hear what you say about clipping against the fur but I can't thnk what else would caouse the redness/irritation, maybe he is more sensitive than most dogs. I normally clip him myself and I am no expert but I have not had this issue before, and as I don't clip against the growth I am assuming this has caused the irritation. Paplover, like you I did consider using Pawpaw ointment as it so good but thought he would be more likely to lick this off. I will try the above and see how he goes, as I said he is fine if he is distracted or even lying down. Thank you again for your support and feedback.

Thank you Poodle fan and Persephone, I have noticed redness on his skin. I think that she may have run the blade against the lie of his coat and caused a burn or irritation. He is fine when out walking and distracted, but still showing signs of irritation at home. I have been cleaning it with a mild antispetic - Betadine and adding a soothing Aloevera lotion as well.

Hi Macksmum, just check that he hasn't been nicked on the anus by the clippers, I have seen that done before, you could put some vitamin e cream on him, hopefully he will be okay by tomorrow. Hi Cala, thank your for your response I have checked him and can't see any nicks, but there is redness on his tail. I have been smoothing Betadine on it.
