  1. this happened the first time my boy went to the beach lots of vom and squirts - only ever did it once - guess he knows no to drink the salty water now! - but i his defence he did always used to swim in a fresh creek so drank as much as he liked!! seems to know the difference now i give gatorade for dehydration i have a tub of the powder so i can make it up as needed - but always give a little after swims or v hot days aids absorbtion of the water so u dont have to give so much....
  2. i guess it depends on the club and how thorough they are - my plan was for training and kennels too to flash a piece of vet letter headed paper under their nose with a due date on - and result of titre test - hope they dont notice the dogs are covered anyway so no probs!! but if they change the vaccine schedule as stated above the vacc cert should stand for 2-3 yrs....rather than 12 months in which case we wouldnt really need titre tests every 12 months either i asked a few boarding kennels and they didnt really know what i was talking about when i asked about accepting titres they said they didnt take unvaccinated dogs i tried to explain but dont think i got thru.... training maybe different - run by lots of doggy people and therefore maybe more knowledge of the testing??
  3. yep but see my topic on boarding kennels without vaccines - in general discussion from the last couple of weeks - kennels, training and insurance companies insist u vaccinate every 12 months....kinda prohibits a lot of people i know until the system catches up with the research....
  4. all sounds good just a quick Q is it a classroom seminar (i assume so) or workshop with dog? just curious obviously more use with dog there but difficult to organise.... yep and def agree to advertise that KP wont be present - prevents misleading people
  5. ooOOOoooo im gonna try those....altho my show is tomorrow doubt itll make too much difference!!
  6. id be interested in a sydney one! could prob get a few from training to come too...
  7. not sure how old ur pup is but 8-10 weeks i thought was generally accepting of new things a bit older - say 10-14 weeks they can suddenly become scared of all sorts of things they were fine with before - thnk those were the rough times but they go thru a little 'stage' after they leave mum and littermates of being uncertain of things before they get confident - just FYI when he realises ur off to the park etc the car will be a lot of fun - i only have to leave the door open and my boys sitting inside waiting for me to take him somewhere!!
  8. Mav had allergies when he was little - wasnt really itchy but fairly had big red, pussy spots all over his tummy and inside legs, was given the neocort cream which stopped the reinfection from the itching and was told that it could be anything!! we hadnt had him long so thought i could be the washing powder (napisan) i use to wash his blankets (at that point every few days) but then went to his diet and cut out absolutely everything except his dry kibble for a week (rash went almost completely) and slowly reintroduced things over the next couple of weeks - turned out it was the red bones/mince i had been giving him - so cut them out and everything else was allowed back never had a problem since and slowly reintroduced red bones - he still doesnt have supermarket mince i think it may have been the preservatives in it..... hes fine with expensive stuff from the butcher!
  9. my boy eats it all - he cant actually eat the middle bit of a bone as theyre too dense but all the rest...i think the marrow can be pretty fattening if ur watching their weight and also rich but it is good for them all round i think JMO...
  10. just what i do - prob wont help if ur boy doesnt like baths either but i get everything done there while hes in the bath before i wash him i do his ears - a small squirk of leo quick massage and a wipe with cleaning pad then he can have a good shake before his bath!! - washes any excess out of his coat too and hes more worried about having bath than his ears just being cleaned!! but my boy likes baths and will sit still in there...
  11. what breed - labrador? - that sounds really high.... just got my boy done - 5 + 4 so 9, 10.6 is his breed average they normally tell u on the report what is the breed average...
  12. when im at shows etc and flies are becoming a nuisance - i spray some aerogrard on a flannel and wipe it over my boys face and paws and anywhere else that seems to be attracting them - generally dont spray the actual dog as it may get in eyes etc!!! think i may get some permoxin if its safer? - does that affect the coat at all (like leave a residue?)
  13. ive been teacing my boy not to eat anything unless ive told him its his - this stemmed from meals when he was tiny i woudl make him sit for food then i would make him wait for a command and slowly built up time hes almost 12 months and were at the point where if i leave the room hell wait for quite a while just lying down looking at it or me hes started coming to get me to 'ask' if he can eat it yet!!! and say sit and eventually his release/eat word i was also trying to do this so he doesnt automatically think that evrything in his food bowl is his!! this is maily because OH does a lot of cooking and i didnt want him hoovering up eveything that fell on the floor before i had a chance to tell him not to - he doesnt pick scraps off the street or try to get at the bins altho he did steal off the worktop once!! ;) noones perfect!!! but i would expect him to leave anything he found outside that i hadnt said he could have secret to this is very slowly and they need to know a 'no' and a 'stay' it a great trick for visitors seeing him lay there while i leave with food in front of him!!!! (altho most think im being mean!!) weve also done right and left paws - as in high five - i taught paw and he always used the same paw anyway then when he had that down i taught hand for the other one now he does both on command and even both at the same time when overenthusiastic!!! what else can i think of.... .....not much atm!!!!
  14. OMG!!! i was only checking out the most recent pics yesterday - i really feel for u - RIP Blocker
  15. yep my boy is blowing atm he started what seems like ages ago but i think im over the worst!! altho there are still a few tufts lingering - just a Q when bathing to pull it out - do u actually bath like fill the bath with him in it? or just a warm shower!!! which is what ive been doing didnt help that he had to have stitches about 3 weeks ago so no bathing or much brushing Mav doesnt really appreciate bathing but knows its gonna happen so gets it over with asap!! and as fo brushing i found out that he seems to know the difference between show grooming and just a quick comb as he farts around for just a quick comb something chronic but will sit for 45 mins to be dried!!!
  16. im kinda with u on this one sorry - i have had bad experiences that have cost big time my boy is a chaser and v independant and as much as i want to i just have to remember that my breed is not trustworthy when it come to coming back - so he stays on rope 8m of it!! but on he more helpful side - is there somewhere u can try recalls where he cant actually go anywhere to bad?? what r U actually worried about - the recall? drowning? him killing something like a bird? him wandering off? if u can find out what UR worrried about it could be easy to alter?! train for.... good luck
  17. JMHO but i wouldnt keep changing what ur giving him - by giving him alternatives - if hes hungary enough he should eat what u give him even if this means a few skipped meals - My boy must eat all his veggies before he can have his chicken carcass - it took him a little while to work it out but as soon as hes finished he comes back to me to ask for his meat! sometimes he tries to get away with not eating it all - simply no carcass until he does it like a naughty kid when they eat theyre dinner they get dessert! if he doesnt eat the veggies or not enough - no carcass that evening i leave them down (as hes not a scoffer) and should he eat it all later then he can have it i think the worse thing to do is to try to accomodate ur dog - simple if theyre hungary they will eat or u end up trying to find a different meal everyday as they didnt like the look of the last one?? good luck (also personally i dont like the meal rolls - can u buy bones instead dont have preservatives etc in u can see its got nothing but meat and bone in it - Lenards sell chicken carcasses 3 for $1)
  18. My boy gets half a tin of homebrand sardines/mackerel/tuna in oil for breakfast with is kibble and absolutely loves it - actually licks the bowl clean!! which he doesnt do with his veggies for dinner!!! the homebrand stuff is usually pretty cheap and i dont think theyre that fussy!!
  19. if u can avoid using a halti i would try to maybe try a limited check - as many say haltis can become a pain but they can be a useful 'quick fix' until further training can take place some dogs seem to go a bit crazy when its first put on only because they dont know what it is - but encouragement and making sure nice things happen when its on are the way to go - playing with it on and giving treats and dinner - but its not uncommon for dogs to go into a 'crocodile death roll'!! but i found as soon as he was out on the street too many other things to be interested in...
  20. my boy is just over 9 months and ive been using ahalti on him since about 4 months as well as training on a choke chain for obedience and show but for the last month or so i have been putting his halti on and attaching the lead to his collar - no pulling eventually i will try removing the halti all together but hes still so excited everytime were out following scents and trying to play with other dogs - i put it down to an age thing and hopefully hell settle down a bit more by 18 months we used to walk our setter on a halti ever since i was little - he was v scatty but eventually we prob could have removed it he walked beautifully ( i was only little) i know K9 force will say dont use a halti but many people use them and many people dont its up to u good luck - Phins gorgeous!!
  21. oh noo thats terrible news - hopefully hell sort himself out in the course of the day....hes such a gorgeous little guy that already had a rough start .....let us know any news this PM
  22. i know akitas do not like anaethetics - well as to say they are v sensitive to them and require only a tiny amount in relation to their body size....i guess u just need to make sure ur vet knows the breed and a gentle reminder during any conversation about operations needed or such prob wouldnt hurt... hope nothing is wrong??
  23. he wont think outside is a punishment - just being seperated from u - if u shut him inside and u go outside it will have the same effect he will think about what he has done and try to avoid being seperated in such a way. he will soon get bored of barking (maybe try this at the w/e after speaking to neighbours!?) and know that u are not going to let him in for a while and go and find somethng to do - hopefully play with toys - investigate the garden etc then let him in when hes been good or go out and play for a while with the morning whining maybe you could get up a little earlier than he starts to whine then he wouldnt think he was getting attention for it?? with my boy i got up at about 2am after letting him out at 10 for his last pee then into his crate and i was up at 6am to play and feed him and we gradually moved the 2am pee forward until he could hold it thru the night use ur crate too for time outs he needs to learn that its a good place and to settle down once inside -ie no barking! with the kong and such toys u really need to start v easy with them we got him used to the fact that it was his and could play with it then put a few little treats inside that would fall out easily - maybe hes more noise orientated than food maybe try the balls and things that make moises when played with i think ur on the right track if he seems to be getting the idea - he is only a baby and he may have gotten attention from the breeder or other dogs/pups for making a lot of noise? good luck i hope u have some peace for christmas
  24. Sorry to hear of ur loss....RIP Lucy
  25. soryy to hear about reactions like that hopefully one day (soon!) opinion will change and we wont need to vaccinate after 12 months.... when was the last tim eyou had a booster for childhood vaccines??! im sure collie people are grateful of the info tho
