  1. sorry why are training/SOCIALISATION classes out of the question atm?
  2. Glad you asked LilyW and also glad you answered Lillysmum! Rogue went in today - im a bag of nerves we moved so its a new vet - she my OHs dog really so he organised it - i just worry/panic when i dont know EVERYTHING i havent even met the vet yet :D i hate putting them under even for 'routine' stuff he was asked to ring a 1430hrs so ill be ringing him not long after that for an update!! god im going to make a terribly overprotective mum!!
  3. yup i guess its just a CC thing - My baby girl love to eat them and run around with them making noises in her mouth - maybe it feels good. They seem to have some kind of death wish and many land/fall/crash onto my deck at dusk and get munched - i try to discourage her but she cant resist :D i assumed they wouldnt do any harm....
  4. Hi DtW at our local petshop you can get 2 sizes of roo tail (cut longer or shorter) i always buy the bigger ones! they are about 10inches long and mine tend to have few sessions over a week with the same bone. At the moment i am giving 1 large roo tail to each once a week (Rogue has been teething) and mine arent really into pigs ears but i would have thought every couple of days would be ok. i dont think the pigs ears have much nutritional value but the roo bone do altho they tend not to have a huge amount of meat on so i still feed normally. You could give the roo tails everyday but they might get bored of them after a while - roo is generally a very good meat to feed dogs in smaller quantities
  5. kinda a bit OT but Customs will open anything not only dog collars - my mum recent sent me a parcel from the UK with a milk jug in and a fridge magnet - she forgot to put on the declaration form a small raindeer she put in the jug - was opened when i got it. ive also had a dive knife i imported seized - lots of forms and about 3 months later i got it back - you can buy them here but not for $3!!(RRP$100!!) if its on their list they will keep things!! our only hope is to get it removed from their list - however if you can just order one - how many idiots do you think will get one coz it looks macho and their big dog!?? leaves it very open to abuse - i would be happier if individual couldnt import them but that they were available from selected places (such as K9 force) who can vet their customers!!
  6. i use the proheart monthly tablets - and have steared well clear of the yearly vacc. never had a problem...i worm my older boy every 3 months with drontal chewables (which he hates!! why they couldnt keep the tab i dont know )
  7. he wont fit in there for long!!! too cute!
  8. Very cute pup - which rescue did he come from - im sure we could find out some more bkgd for you?? but the raw stuff is great anyway - most dogs do very well on it yep sounds fine - best to keep growing pups a little lean but im sure ull keep his weight in check. with the rice and veggies you might like to add a little apple cider vinegar - works wonders for all sorts of things and generally helps with good digestive system but the smell can often put some dogs off so a little to start with and build it up - i give about a tablespoon a day (1/2 with brekkie and 1/2 with dinner)
  9. i would see how they go with the introductions - youll be able to tell a lot more from how they behave if they should be able to see each other etc - might be more distressing if they can or cant?? maybe a crate on the deck to start with so pup gets used to crate and then crate could be moved to where older dogs are but not full access - or even a playpen?? just ideas....
  10. could also be jeolousy?? if its when you are patting/cuddling them - thats not acceptable in my house and may need correction. its difficult to tell without seeing it
  11. it took my boy a little while a 'get' that he can control my pup! at first he would just let her eat his dinner and look at me to help him - now he know if he grumbles at her she'll back off!!! they will work it out make sure your not favouring pup accidently - older pup get cuddles first etc theyll work it out i know im going to have a few tentative weeks when my girl becomes alpha - as he'll let her rule the roost - then i may have to seperate them at dinner or she'll eat everything!!!
  12. Congrats looks like the OP has well and truly left the building!!!
  13. i brought home another pup a couple of months ago and while i was able to get home for the first 4 weeks or so - she was on 2 meals a day from 8 weeks and has been left for up to 10hrs with Mav as company - they are secure and watered and left outside when we are not home. She has never been a problem - not destructive, escaping, noisy, poorly behaved - my neighbours have even commented on how they just lounge around all day. Im with Sunny70 - mine sleep most of the day even if i am home??!! its why i chose the breed i did i have fostered quite a few dogs now too and they all adjust very quick our routine - if your taking fosters which havent been quarantined prior to coming home then IMO more fool you! again IMO i would never have a foster/guest dog that may be incubating parvo at my house thats not fair on my 2. Providing a safe/healthy environment is maintained what does it matter?
  14. hmm sounds interesting!! my boy has never humped anything in his life altho he seemed to make an exception for a M bassett hound at the park one one day !!!
  15. arrrhhh very cute *he's* looking a bit neglected for my liking!!!
  16. i would never feed any cooked bones - to any dog, big or small mine eat most things but tend to leave the really dense bones - such as the massive beef joints/knuckles butchers often sell as 'dog bones' - i dont bother with them they have no meat on and the dogs cant eat them! i find ribs can splinter a bit if you have an inhaler/non chewer - but mine seem fine with them. i like the lamb spines (not sure what they are called at the butcher) nice soft bone and generally quite a bit of meat.
  17. LilyW - this IS a public forum and therefore anyone can post their opinion. It is up to you to take or leave what is said/recommended/suggested. Generally i use my vets and (my breed) breeders for medical advice but sometimes things come up on here that are useful and that i wouldnt have thought of! so i would suggest that it is worth reading. Also appreciate that by the nature of written text - it can be difficult to determine if someone is doing the right thing for their pets. for example if you are new to the forum and havent posted much we have no idea how to approach you - its nice to have some kind of background that the OP has good intentions. obviously some subjects will push more peoples buttons than others such as leaving pups alone and especially the use of prong collars etc i hope you stay - i learn new stuff all the time
  18. my baby hangs off my older boys face and neck, he lays down so she can reach!!! she also bites his hocks so he stops to let her get the toy hes carrying - she has more recently started nibbling - i think its grooming more tho. your boy will put her in her place if she plays up - i have found my girl has a much softer mouth much younger than my boy (who was effectively an only child and had to learn from me!). i also find she automatically copies him for good behaviour - she has never touched a plate etc he is teaching her well
  19. my boy started messing pretty early bout 6 months i think - was more in the night tho - he has a trampoline bed and there was a puddle on the floor when i cleaned !!! as said above his balls may not have completely dropped yet so makes them a bit harder to find!! my boy had to get used to having his handled as show boys get fondled in the ring
  20. my boy has been fasting himself a bit lately for no apparent reason - he isnt getting food anywhere else and just doesnt seem hungary - but i know he wont starve himself....
  21. when my boy was a pup - i worked near home and was lucky enough to be able to go home at lunchtime to feed and play. at present both my dogs are outside when we are not home and are fine for lon periods of time. More often than not my OH is home (he often works nights) but sometimes he works days and we are both out for 10hrs - mine are fine with this - my boy has gradually got used to increasing periods of time and my pup is fine a settled well to his routine having dogs and working a lot is not impossible - admittedly not always ideal but dogs adapt and so do we Im sure everyone would rather be spending time at home with a puppy than working but thats life - better to be prepared and get some help with suggestions and training.
  22. just thought i would add - that im not sure another dog at this stage (while simba is still a baby) is a good idea. 2 puppies can get into far more trouble than 1!!! there is also then 2 lots of training to be done when time with your baby is already limited - maybe once simba is 12 months + or so - when he knows the ropes of whats good and bad is a great time to introduce another pup. My boy is about 2.5yr and we just got another pup to keep him company and she has been a breeze really he keeps her in line and she has learnt a lot from his behaviour of whats acceptable and whats not. great to hear about the neighbours - also great about the socialising with the kids - maybe they would like to help (with parents help/supervision) - maybe they could go in and play at lunchtime with puppy during holidays etc?? just a thought ETA - where are the pics???, im afraid coming on here with a new puppy and not letting us see him is unacceptable behaviour!!??
  23. yep my pup loved it - licked it off everything! i guess it depends on the dog but then my boy will eat vindaloo without any probs!
  24. yep i feed them almost daily along with all sorts of bones - just supervise for the first few incase pup gets into trouble
  25. i was aware that the opposite is true - the more you massage floppy puppy ears the stronger the cartilage gets? Akita start with floppy puppy ears and they generally come up between 8 and 20 weeks depending on the individual - i tend to find they can go up and down a bit especially while they are teething - due to changes in the jaw. obviosuly dont be too rough with puppy ears but gently scrathing behind the ears is (with a lot of dogs) very bonding and affectionate - i wouldnt stop!
