  1. only thing i can think of is giving him more time outside, yes i know very time consuming but they have to go eventually! Are you crating him? puppies dont usually pee where they sleep makes it easier to make him go when you want.... Has he ever been told off harshly (i understand this is a trying time, we all lose it now and again!) for going in the house? only thought he may be hiding it from you as he gets in trouble when he gets caught so now wont go infront of you? Some dogs are just super sensitive and a few harsh words and they get scared another thing you could try is keeping him onlead when you come back inside as soon as he looks like he might go quickly run him out the door - they automatically seem to stop peeing while in flight !! then lots of praise.
  2. Hey Kita my girl gets roo bones and will crunch up the bones if given enough time - i usually try to take them away before she gets tht far or shes throws up the little bits in the night too are you trying to feed raw? i feed mine bones and veggies but i do it myself (dont buy the rolls or anything...) let me know if you want any info - my boy has thrived on it and too our baby girl (7 months)
  3. just watched the vid - doesnt look as bad as you describe here!! and he appears to move freely (without any pain) so i would expect something can be done to prevent further damage to the joints. Also have to add - i love the fluffies - so cute!!! hes one handsome man! (and i love the fact his little ears stayed down - very cute puppy!!)
  4. i just found this - ring any bells?? OSTEOCHONDROSIS Osteochondrosis (OCD) is a focal area of disruption in endochondral ossification. OCD occurs in the physis and/or epiphyseal regions of growth cartilage. This disease can be generalized or systemic and is widespread among young, rapidly growing, warm blooded, domesticated species and in humans. In all species the etiology is considered multifactorial. In the dog, OCD risk factors are associated with age, gender, breed, rapid growth, and nutrient (primarily calcium) excesses.(1,11-14) All large and giant breeds are at increased risk for OCD, with Great Danes, Labrador retrievers, Newfoundlands, and rottweilers having the highest risk.(14) Males have an increased risk of OCD in the proximal humerus, but gender relationships are not found with OCD involving other joints.(14) Osteochondrosis lesions are routinely found in pigs as young as 25 days of age.(15) These findings would help substantiate that OCD may be caused by a localized, primary effect on the chondrocyte rather than secondary effects of biomechanic force because rapid growth and weight gain are much less of a factor at this age. Regardless of the pathogenesis of OCD, the underlying role of nutrition is still a factor. In the growing puppy, over nutrition can result in a mismatch between body weight and skeletal growth, which can lead to overloading of skeletal structures. Nutrition of the mother may also play a role in the development of OCD in the offspring.(16) Although generalized nutrient excesses have been blamed for OCD lesions, there is increasing evidence implicating specific nutrients. Excessive calcium intake resulting in a hypercalcitoninism and hypoparathyroidism(2) manifests as retarded bone maturation, inhibition of osteoclastic activity, and slowed cartilage maturation. These effects on bone and cartilage increase the incidence of osteochondral lesions in articular and physeal cartilage.(2) Osteochondrosis of the acetabular rim has been proposed to lead to a shallow acetabulum and subsequent CHD in the dog. Most of the studies evaluating the effect of vitamin C on OCD have used the pig as a research model and agree that vitamin C supplementation has no effect on the incidence of OCD.(8,17) Indicates you might want to check his thyroid function too....
  5. no probs - let me know when you find out.... advance food is fairly available here from petbarn and a lot of vets - it is classed as a premum food i think - i add a little tinned fish to the kibble to make it more interesting also good for oil maybe as you have caught this quite early while he is still growing - it will give him a chance to sort it out before the growth plate fuses - do you have a doggy hydro pool anywhere down there - it might be good for his tendons and ligaments for exercise without the stress - but of course consult your vet on that one if you want any more info on what i feed my furkids give me a shout by PM Also Mickatie come to mind as someone who has done a lot of research on skeletal structure of med/large breed dogs and whats affects them, maybe give her a shout - but i would expect she would want to know all the details like me
  6. Hi and welcome to the forums sounds like you are doing well - only thing i can suggest is that with the food bowl put it back on the bench until he sits still and waits everytime it goes back on the work top he will realise it takes longer - soon he will be sitting quietly and well behaved waiting for his dinner bowl to be put on the floor. Also see Steve triangle of temptation at the top of the training forum - apply the basics and he will work wonders for you also when he jumps up - simply knee him in the chest, hard and reward him while he has 4 feet on the floor, it may sound a bit cruel but should work almost instantly and make sure he know he cant do it to strangers either. Im with you on mouthing - my 2 have quickly learnt what is acceptable and what isnt by my reaction and i would never worry about putting my hands in either of their mouths for any reason. sounds like your pup is getting a great start PS dont forget he is still only very baby puppy - but they can learn very quick too
  7. both my pups came on advance large breed puppy growth, and they both still get a cup ful each morning. Dinner they get barf style bones and veggie patties with added Vit C amougst other things i would assume you would prob need to get him on the lean side to help the situation if he isnt already can you explain a bit more about exactly what has happened to the bones - im a biologist and am very interested to find out - what bone is small? sorry you dont have to answer me im just interested (even more so as he is an akita )
  8. does anyone know if freezing ACV removes any of the 'mother' qualities???? Ive been making veggie patties which i freeze in a muffin tray and add a heap of ACV into the mix i assumed it would still be good for the digestion etc by the time it got to the stomach.... my boy wont go anywhere nr any water of food with it on 'raw' my girl however gets a splash every morning on her kibble and never worries
  9. i think i already know the answer!
  10. Hi Sorry to hear bout Kato's troubles. Have you contacted your breeder to let them know whats happening - they may know more about it than the vet (often is the case with large breed concerns ) do you mean that his joint hasnt formed properly? some dogs get what's known as 'cow hock' which looks like their legs wobble when they move from behind, which i was under the impression, is due to bad hips - but that maybe a myth! hopefully he will grow out of whatever it is, without too much trouble later on....
  11. i have been taking my guys out from around 6 months for short walks - i think its important for training and socailisation - ill often drive to places and just sit and have an ice cream or brekkie with them with me so they get out and about early without too much walking. then they get to meet other strange dogs and lots of people - experience bikes, strollers, skateboards etc without freaking out! i consider its nothing more than them running round the yard for 5 minutes!
  12. my fur kids will steal clothing if given the opportunity especially if it belongs to someone they know and are missing - our girl had my OH shoe the other day and was happily curled up with it asleep cute but naughty! i generally put it down to we havent spent enough time with them that day or the day before + the opportunity. With Lily at almost 6 months i would be expecting your little angel puppy to be causing some upset in that department! i dont anticipate being out of the woods until at least 12 months!!
  13. i saw 2 cattle dog (poss Xs) at the beach last week and then had been shaved all except their tails and feathering ??!! WTF???!!! i assumed it was prob a heat thing or maybe they were looking for ticks !!
  14. not that chewy which was stuck with all strands and in the fabric tried the freezer first and no difference...
  15. i would try rubbing alcohol (avail for the chemist) - i got a little bottle when i got chewing gum on my new trousers - i was gutted but came out straight away
  16. with the night training i was getting up twice in the nght to start with to prevent the need for any accidents - i let them out at 10 b4 i went to bed at 2am and 4am and i got up at 6 to play for a hr b4 work - i then slowly moved the times by about 5 mins a night until i had only 1 night trip and then slowly moved that to 6am and it worked like clockwork! what kind of bedding are u using? i would suggest while he is still very young to simply use a blanket or 2 which can be thrown in the wash every few days if he pees on it. If he has some kind of mattress which he has pee'ed on it will already be scented and he will continue to pee on it, unless it can be washed/sterilised. i bought a few lengths of fleece fabric from spotlight for my furkids they can be washed over and over again (i use Napisan to remove any scent of pee and sterilise) and tend to be a bit less absorbant that some fabrics/blankets. my boy has a trampoline bed now and dont like having a blanket on it as its too hot atm - the trampoline bed prevents elbow sores and allows plenty of ventilation to keep him cool in the summer - i add a blanket in the winter...
  17. Hi Beaglenewb! i to have a 'hard to train, dominant' breed that has been a breeze to train! you said in the original post they want you to use a correction collar - does it actually say a check chain? there are also martingales which generally make life easier for the person training. (sort of a half check collar) the club i go to - actively encourages their use and is happy for you to use anything else correction or otherwise providing you can demonstrate the dog responds to it and you have control. if your dog is perfectly behaved on a flat collar thats fine. i have taken by girl on a prong (altho not attached to the lead) and there was no comments. But if you visit some classes i think you will quickly understand why some clubs suggest you come prepared with something like a correction collar. Often there are older untrained pound dogs that are completely out of control that turn up on a flat collar dragging the owner not far behind!
  18. did you specifically ask if they could do the C5 for you? tell them that you will take you business elsewhere if they wont - i would expect them to cooperate....or is there another nearer vet - its only a jab (not anything to worry about medically...)
  19. Hi Emmark and welcome to DOL there are heaps of threads on crate training - use the search button at the top of the screen Crate training thread this prob has most of the questions newbies have for crate training... once you try it you will never imagine how people cope without one!!! - my 6 month old pup pee'ed in the house about 4 times before she was completely trained at 10 weeks i was very proud of her (and myself!!) as a general rule a pup can only hold their bladder for 1 hr + their age in months. if you put in the work they will repay you - i was getting up twice in the night and they were outside during the day in a big pen on the grass when i couldnt be there to let them out or keep an eye on what they were up to!!
  20. i would consider a crate i have a large breed and have never had any problems it correct s exactly what you have described - anyone can tell you that if you leave a puppy in room all day its going to toilet, and i wouldnt suggest that you leave pup in a crate all day either - how is pup supposed to know where to go in the room ie on the paper? can you leave pup in the bathroom or laundry (easier to clean up messes) using a crate my boy was able to have free reign of the house by about 7 months - its isnt something that they will use forever - however my boy will still try to squeeze into his if i get it out for a foster !!! what breed is angus? and i think some pics are essential!!
  21. im the same - i was told that a C5 is generally the max mine had a c3 with the KC last time...
  22. Hi Bickle sounds like ur on the right track - my boy was a bit of a fussy eater when he was growing up and i started feeding him some barf at around 6 months and he never got human food. just didnt always feel like eating i guess - i adjusted the portions down so he was only getting a tiny bit but he would finish it and slowly increased it - hes still not really a big boy for akitas but very healthy and a good weight for his size. im still feeding advance large breed puppy to both of mine for brekkie more as a snack than anything else! and i add a bit of tinned fish - sardines/tuna/mackeral as i thought it was more interesting than the plain kibble everyday!! never any complaints.... bought another pup 6 months ago - and Mav will always clean his bowl but my girl could eat for Aus so very different habits even tho they are half litter mates!! No dog will starve itself (but they will try to get something more yummy!)
  23. yep my boy always used to wear his down on the concrete and they dont grow too fast but we moved a little while ago and its all grass so ive had to start filing them but he has no problems with the dremel - i left it on on the floor for a bit for them first off then on to get used to (with no attachments so they could hurt their noses when they sniffed!) ignored it after a couple of minutes.
  24. oh - dotn get me wrong i know the day is always very different!! but im not a nervy person and i dont care if we never get there - its was just that hes almost 3 and i had him cc titled at 12 months and was going to work on his ob trialling after that - did all the training and they said i should put him in then but i kinda got distracted and now the rules have changed!! ;) ive been doing lots more work with him at home lately and am generally looking for more things to be working on as hes pretty good at most things i can think of!!! Thx for the fodder!! i expect we'll get there eventually - but as i said time and distance play a factor too so when there only a few trials i would go to a yr i should prob start entering...!!
