sorry i just relised how new you are to the forums - maybe you could tell us a bit more about your circumstances and what you want tot do with the pup just so we can get a feel for how pup will fit in with your lifestyle, might make it easier to make more appropriate suggestions

i hate to say it but some dogs are born whingers! however i would be waiting a good few weeks before coming tothis conclusion! i had an akita girl who did nothing but cry no matter what we did! Make sure you are crating pup during the day too - sleeping during the day is fine but i would recommend getting pup out for a few hrs and a good play around 7pm then pup will be tired for bed time - dont let pup sleep all day! or it will be up all night. Make his(?) routine consistent - feeding times etc - he will soon get used to life at your house also make sure your teaching pup its ok to be inthe crate - not just put in there when youve had enough! sit with pup in crate feed treats and dinner etc in there and let pup out again - dont always leave pup when its crated. There is heaps of info about crating on here - if you have any specific questions please ask Opps!! just reread your post - go get a crate!

im fairly sure my 2 would eat chillis if they had the opportunity - they love hot stuff - they can eat curries i can only just about eat (and i eat fairly hot curries!!) i wouldnt expect it to have any short term effects but i dont think the dog should be allowed access anyway, over time it may be more of a problem...

Humiliated At Dog Training
Akitaowner replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
i wasnt too sure about turning up with one at our little club on the CC NSW but when checked (coz you cant see it on my guys) i said i had a martingale and a prong on - no probs actually all the trainers there have either got one or used one so all good i tend to use/attach the martingale during play before and after 'work' and just clip the prong when she wont behave at heeling etc. im in the process of taking her off it anyway..... Sorry you had such a bad experience - ive also been to clubs that frowned upon check chains - but i told them i knew how to use it and would continue to do so (they didnt ask me to leave!) ive also had a trainer at another big club tell me i got 'that type of dog' for particular reasons - implying i wanted my boy (when he was 12 weeks old) for protection  i mean, some people, where to these 'volunteers' get off telling me what breed i can have - she got an earful when i told her i had been waiting the best part of 4 yrs for him..... people that dont understand dogs and breeds shouldnt be allowed to comment ....well in my world!!! -
Will Chopper Ever Stop Pulling On The Lead?
Akitaowner replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
my boy was a bit of a puller - not really bad but annoyingly so when out walking. When we got our baby girl i didnt want her to be the same and knew i needed to sort him out quickly. Ruthless - where did you get your prong? i think they are restricted in NSW unless you are a trainer and are shown how to use it properly? I went and got a prong from K9 force and have made sure that i stuck tot the program given and no more pulling - my girl is already off it and walking nicely on a martingale and my boy is getting there but he needs a reminder still. you will never train 2 dogs together.... you need to reduce their sep anxiety between each other - my boy is 3yrs older than my girl she will eventually be left on her own i dont want her distressed in that situation - again K9 force taught me how to ensure they are both happy when left alone. any dog will learn to pull in any 'tool' if allowed - they modify their behaviour to get around the problem and i believe now chopper has worked out that the prong has its limits you may have furtehr issues. For as long as the dog doesnt know what the max pinch could be - you have the upper hand....when they realise they can beat it you have a dog that pulls harder as it has been conditioned to do.... -
How Do You Slow A Fast Eating Dog Down?
Akitaowner replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
my girl is getting a bit of a porker so is on a diet and i cut her portion in half! but my boy is fine and can eat anything (the joys of being entire!) so my boys gets his in his bowl Rogue gets hers in a toy (i use the indestructable treat ball(?) from crown) so its takes her ages to get it all out i also feed part frozen chicken carcasses - if they are straight out the freezer run them under the tap for a few seconds to prevent ice burn -
i feed sardine everyday - they get half a tin each with brekkie - ive just read a lot that supports that long term exposure to soy products by akitas can cause problems each to their own
-
I tend to just chuck in various amounts - but ill make it up 4-500ml ACV 20 teaspoons Kelp powder 3/4 small bag frozen home brand diced veggies 4 teaspoons vit C 200ml oil (most common varieties) 8 large vit tablets (not sure what make my breeder sent them down) But you can add and subtract things as per the dogs needs
-
nothing wrong with the veggie oil ones - but i tend to be a bit wary of them coz they are usually soy oil (akitas are soy intollerant) if i can only get the oil (i usually get the springwater ones) i pour as much oil off as possible before addng to the bowl
-
i feed bones and beggies in the evening and a small (even smaller now for Rogue as shes just been put on a diet ) brekkie of half a cup of good quality kibble with some tinned fish mixed in. i like feeding barf but cant be arsed in the mornings and i prefer feeding twice a day due to bloat reasons
-
Hi Shmoo I make my own barf patties.... good for general health. 1kg pet mince 2 lamb hearts ACV Kelp powder frozen home brand diced veggies vit C oil (most common varieties) vit tablets dice the meat and leave to one side everything else in the blender until pulverised Add the meat in a mixing bowl (i make 2 batches) Spoon into a muffin tray and freeze - feed them straight out the freezer
-
yep - you have to puree the veggies i buy some pet mince and mix it 50/50 with my veggie mix - then freeze in a muffin tray into portions chuck them in a bag in the freezer - feed them frozen! dogs LOOVE them! i use - a homebrand diced veggie mix, acv, kelp, vit c, garlic, eggs + shell, anything else thats laying around. i also usually add some diced organ meat - makes it easier to feed a little regularly.

Hair Between Toes And Pads
Akitaowner replied to eclecticgirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
my boy has had fungal infection between his toes - (he also has webbed feet) so i yhave started cutting the hair back to try to help them dry better. on better homes and gardens last week - Dr Harry met a SWF that would keep licking his feet. he suggested dipping in methylated spirits. dries the foot out well and doesnt taste good but not harmful...i have started washing in malaseb also but think the meths dip might be better... -
my 2 cant move mne - put more water in!! yep all my indoor water play stopped once we got a paddling pool they both love it :p

Garlic Used As Natural Flea Repellent...
Akitaowner replied to O-Ren's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i didnt vote i do feed garlic crushed up in their veggie patties, along with ACV and kelp and everything else i like to give them - they also get advantix every month i never seen a flea in Mavs life and were in a 'high flea' area. so i would say it was solely the garlic but it might help! -
i have the golf kit version (much cheaper than the full one ) and use the slow setting. I would try it, leave in contact for a very short period and then feel it with your finger to gauge how hot its getting. i did my kids back feet last night (i alternate different nights so they dont have to put up with it so long!) i treid the higher setting on my tool and found it was too quick - took too much off to quick and i got very close to a quick. i have found while in the process of doing the dogs i do tend to catch my own nails while trying to hold their toes in a good position!!
-
i would also suggest that u just use a simple blanket u can chuck in the wash to sanitise that way u wont be buying a new bed every week. Our girl has just turned 8 months and she still has only a blanket :D mainly coz im lazy and havent bought her a trampoline bed!! but she is completely trustworthy as far as toiletting in the house/crate/pen goes
-
at 2 months couldnt you put him in a puppy pen on a bit of clean floor that way he wouldnt get so dirty everyday!!! be very careful with pups around workshops - my mum used to do reception at a 'workshop' they went thru 2 baby puppies getting sick and dying. They never said it was the workshop but mum always had a terrible cough when she worked there and suspected the pups had breathed something in. make sure he doesnt lick anything off his coat/paws im sure you/we would hate anything to happen to your baby ;)
-
i just bought an 'indistructable treat ball' and the 'stones' to fit - cant remember who makes them but i got it from petbarn - wasnt cheap but is cheaper than repairing walls !! she LOVES it, she only gets it when were out and i fill the middle with liver treats and she can chew at the stones all day - the first one has lasted a week ;) and shes very excited to get it everyday ;)

What My Vet Said About Fleas
Akitaowner replied to ruthless's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i use advantix on our 2 and they also get ACV in their brekkie which i believe helps from the inside also generally keeps the coat and digestive tract healthy. i have fosters come thru all the time and only the one i had last week has actually left them a little more itchy than normal - i put that down to it being the end of the month and they get the aadvantix on the 1st of the month - so they got it a couple of days early -
I dont want to argue - but my dog would never 'rip my face off' i did it maybe twice as i wanted to make sure i could manipulate the dog without objection, and i did. My 'status' is fine i have numerous programs in place to ensure it remains that way, believe me the war was never started. Anyone who has met Mav would testify he does not have 'typical' dominant Akita temperament, if you have ever met an akita. i didnt say all food training = bribery but i believe it is often used as an easy, quick fix for many people in basic training. Showelling treats down a dogs throat for a hr a week at 'training' does little in the long run except ensure that you have to have treat in your hand to get a response! JMO

well flame me if you like but i have used the alpha roll with my boy when he was younger -around 12 months and it was fine. I have never had any issues with him being aggressive or anything but when reaching maturity he would push his luck and his weight around. worked for me - ive never done it to my girl but she is only 7 months if she behaves the same way ( in dominance) i'll do the same with her. I'm not a fan of using treats for ALL training - then all you are doing is bribing the dog, not training it. They should obey commands for a simple praise reward also.

i would be crating him while your out - but dont forget to crate him while your home too so it doesnt become a negative association....i bought a toy yesterday for our girl - who is a serial chewer (chewed a hole in a plasterboard wall last week ) its called 'everlasting chew ball' and you can buy these 'stones' that go in either side that are rock hard but taste good - so they lick and chew at the stones and eventually when they get thru them there a gap inside - kinda kong style - where you can hide loose treats - its been keeping her entertained ever since wasnt cheap but looked and felt robust - she can get the treats out of a kong in less than 60 seconds!! my boy was never a chewer so this is all new to me - but shes confined in a big puppy pen and has toys etc so im hoping eventually i can let her out the pen with all the same toys and she will be ok....

when my 2 were babies i and i was home in the evenings watching TV i would set an alarm for every 20 minutes - the door was shut, they had access to the crate for snoozing but every 20 mins i would walk them outside - just encourage with treats and wait for them to go. Just curious as to what your night routine is? i was getting up twice in the night in the early days - pups can only hold for about 4 hrs. Is he being allowed to go in the house at night, or is he confined? Id suggest you check out crate training - it makes life a lot easier!!! and my 2 love their crates
