Dog Behaviour And Genetics Phd Scholarship Up For Grabs
efowler replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thankyou so much for posting! I will definitely be applying. I graduate from a bachelor of animal science honours this year, have already applied for many graduate positions but want to keep all my options open. A PHD was one first option. -
Does Anyone Rescue From Kempsey?
efowler replied to Sheridan's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
http://www.petrescue.com.au/member/423 This is the petrescue link to PMAWS - Port Macquarie Animal Welfare Services. They dont seem to have a website but do have a facebook page. Im not sure how often they rescue, I do know they regularly fundraise and raise awareness in the community, including discounted desexing. I am originally from Wauchope (near Port) and have noticed there isnt many private rescues along the Mid North Coast. There is volunteer RSPCA branches in Kempsey, Port and Taree but im not sure if they actively rescue. They may be a small rescue in Taree. But many of these pounds do struggle and only recently started to release to rescue. There definetly needs to be more carers or rescues in this area! -
Does Anyone Rescue From Kempsey?
efowler replied to Sheridan's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I haven't yet but I did speak to them last week as there was a bitch with 9 newborn pups. I am originally from near port and had a friend travelling to Wagga from kempsey so it all fitted in well. When I spoke to them they were very nice and I just sent 16d paperwork, then when I confirmed later RSPCA up there had already taken them which was good news for the dogs. They have only recently started to work with rescues I think. -
Ad I Saw... Isn't This Illegal?
efowler replied to tdierikx's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Companion animals act maybe? I'm on my phone atm but will have a look later on. Wagga rangers threatened someone with fines last year who had strays, advertised on radio and were keeping them until owners came. We tell people all the time to take to the pound and then if necessary we can rescue it through the appropriate channels. The first place I would look if my dog went missing would b the pound, not some random's backyard. -

Wagga Animal Rescue's Dream Of A Desexing Project
efowler replied to efowler's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks Sway :) Not sure why the original one didn't work as I copied and pasted from the thread in rescue section lol Thanks for the support guys! -
Thanks for the info and suggestions. I am actually meeting with president of Wagga RSPCA today to see if we can do soemthing together. :) CSU Vet School runs a spey clinic every year open to rescues and the pound in which 4th/5th year vet students do the surgeries under supervision at a very discounted price. I have spoken to them previously about a desexing project but when they opened in Wagga they made agreements with other vets not to be open to the public and not take business from the other vets. CSU only has a referral vet here and are attached to a public vet surgery. So their hands are tied in regards to that.

Shamelessly asking for people to vote to help us win $5000 for a community desexing project. We have been working on this for a while and have already fundraised a few thousand dollars. We hope to run something every 6 months including discounted microchipping as well. This would benefit the entire community. http://sunsuperdream...esexing-project Any votes would be much appreciated!

Temperoary Care For Old Kelpie And A Cat Needed
efowler replied to efowler's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Actually brother and sister team! :) But great people and do a wonderful job! They are indeed. Lovely people when I've spoken to them on the phone. Here's hoping the owner can be persuaded that it's best for the pets to be rehomed. I'll watch this thread to see if there's anything further to help Max and Karen help the 2 pets. -
All Sorted Can Be Removed

Our dog had a collar with a W.A.R tag and our number for the time when microchip changes over. But I guess the other family didn't notice lol -
All Sorted Can Be Removed
efowler replied to efowler's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
All sorted!!!! 2 very similar resuce staffies were being adopted and just accidentally got switched. Will be fixed in the morning. :) -
Our rescue dog Oscar a American Staffy cross got adopted to Melbourne and was put on transport Wednesday night arriving in Mebourne Thursday morning. This is a photo of Oscar. He is less than 12 months old, very friendly and excited. I have just spoken to the adopters to check in and they sent me a photo of 'him' but it is not Oscar. This is the random dog she was given. If anyone knows where Oscar may be, maybe a rescue group? Or if someone knows where the random dog came from. Please let me know. We are extremely worried now and I have contacted the transport company with every number I have for them and left lots of voicemails. My number is 0407865174.

Vet and Animal Science degrees are worlds apart. A Bachelor of Animal Science is in no way a lower degree it is just different but has so many fields to work in and the careers are very diverse. The comment about being an assistant or handler is just wrong and you have obviously not looked into the degree at all. It is more than any Tafe course can provide and is aimed at producing animal scientists! I am currently studying a Bachelor of Animal Science through CSU in Wagga. Our course is one of the best in the country. I am in my final honours year. I am the first at specialize in companion animal welfare, behaviour and management. This year I am evalutating the policies of many pounds and shelters in regional/rural NSW to assess which policies affect euthanasia rates, as well as doing temperament testing and other statistics. This is all for cats as very little work has been done in this area. Then I hope to continue on with a phD in feral cat management. Using science to better control populations. These are huge issues for every council/area in Australia. Scientists are the ones who go and research and find all evidence so policies and regulations can be changed. My future career opportunities include working for government, councils, lecturering, continue researching, etc. The differences between vet and animal science are; Vet science produces vets. Animal science produces scientists, lab researchers, ag representatives, nutritionists, reproductive specialists, behaviorists, educators, government reps, drug developmentors, drug company reps, the list is endless in these fields. I have a friend who just graduated and is now doing a phD on welfare and conditioning at Dubbo Zoo. Others are working in labs on parasites which greatly affect the livestock industry. Others are nutrionists for hills. It depends on what you want to do. If you want to be a zoo keeper, vet nurse, shelter assistant, etc then tafe is the best place. If you want to study hard and work in a science based field than do go to uni.

I think there should be an option for a full time student as I think there is a few of us. I do also work casually, am studying honours for my bachelor n run a rescue. :)

Local Prime News Promotes Pet Store That Sells Puppies
efowler replied to D4DOGZ's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh no that's sad. Prime is normally really good. They did a story on our rescue just before Xmas about making sure pets are lifelong commitments if bought for Xmas. They also did a story this week on another local Wagga rescue. -

Are you or anyone else admins on the page? If you are you should be able to edit, change anything and other delete her if she was an admin. -
Great thread!! I think our partners get is so hard! I drag my poor boyfriend everywhere with me. Alot of people in Wagga have probably meet or seen him before, he does so much for us and I never really thank him for it. He is kinda awkard and just does all the heavy lifting or follows me around lol I swear he has given me an ultimadum like 100 times now. Im sure he will be so relieved the day I stop rescue but he knows it makes me happy and thats all that matters. Matt is a real cat person so whenever I bring home a snuggly cat or cute lil kitten he just gives in. He actually comes to the pound sometimes and just cant leave some there. We joke in W.A.R all the time that we are going to get T-Shirts for our partners which say "Real men love cats!"

Otherwise if you cant find anyone in Albury you can get a refferal to Wagga CSU (Charles Sturt University) vet. They are only open to public via referral. There are so many experienced vets that work out of there. Hundreds of years experience between all of them.
