  1. I really dont think the good people who run this forum would condone the use of inhamane control of native animals..Not only illegal but also immoral' Dont do it you can try sump oil but it hasnt worked whe i have tested it on my local tigers and copperheads, if they are willing to cut them selves inhalf to get to water or a mouse the the sump oil idea would have to be like a moat..You would need a drawbridge to get over it..
  2. The use of bird netting will turn a snake into a dangerous animal very quickly. It is a cruel and inhumane death because the snake will cut itself in to pieces over a few dys and the pain and suffering needs to be addressed. birdnetting Does this link work When a snake is in birdnet it is in pain and will bite anything with venom, Please do not use this evil stuff as it not only catches snakes but more often kills bluetongues and bearded dragon.
  3. Unless your dog is trained not to, or dosnt naturally approach strange animals, such as rats, lizards, roos, birds ect. I think you are taking a chance by not preventing it by use of a lead in the snakey areas. If your dog habitually hunts and dosnt back off when told, then it will always be in danger when off the lead in these places. If you can train your dog to sit when he or she sees a bluetongue skink then the chances of the snake bite are lessened dramatically. Like about 99% for example. Dogs are only bitten when they provoke a snake. Please be careful this summer as it may be redhot for snakes.
  4. What a great bunch of responses, It does seem like more people here would rather let the snake go on its way and not go for the shovel which is good for the snake and good for the environment as well. Someone asked if putting snake poo out works as a deterent for mice. It dosnt. I have seen mice eat the stuff. If anyone has a question that needs answering in a hurry, just ring me on 0408067062. In the meantime, why dont you kick back and watch some videos i have made over the last couple of weeks. I hope you enjoy them. :D And subscribe to my Youtube channel please.
  5. Yes BQ, having a large resident snake living on your property is good because it is keeping smaller snakes away and it probably knows and has met your animals and is aware of them, therby making a surprise meeting more unlikely. Big snakes are more likely to give a dry bite where as smaller snakes will unload their venom when they bite. If a snake has nowhere to hide it will not stay around, they are very shy and like somewhere to get out of sight.
  6. Got a call yesterday from a guy saying he put his foot in his boot and felt something move. He didnt try to see what it was, instead he rang me, or rather, he rang the RSPCA and got my number, then asked if he could bring the boot around. Well of course I have to film it. Hope you enjoy the visit as much as I did. There are a few new videos added to the youtube channel so make a cuppa and kick and have a larf at my expense. Cheers
  7. This is what a standard copperhead looks like but they can also look like this, these are all from the Mornington peninsula.
  8. Sorry, but since when is a copperhead black with a cream belly? Copperheads are often very dark, almost black and the side scales can be cream or red and anything between. They vary in colouration hugely.
  9. Hi Sandgruber, Here in Australia, the young snakes, tigersnakes and copperheads and blacksnakes are all live born and their venom, while not as big a load as an adult, is just as potent and the little ones are more likely to envenomate you than an adult aswell. Brownsnakes hatch from an egg and are straight away, just as potent as the mother snake. @ FlyingFurball, Im a govt, lic wildlife controller (Snake Catcher) during the day and a licenced crowd controller at night. I spose you could call me a profesional snake catcher but we care for a variety of native animals at our shelter. Not just snakes.
  10. I dont have a lot of faith in the vitimin C theory, but some farmers believe it works.. Not to many toxicologists think much of it though. @ Dandybrush, snakes are most often seen on warm mornings and afternoons which is when they sun themselves. On hot days the snake will avoid the midday sun and find a shady spot to chill. Tigers anakes can be found out and about later in the evening when they raid birds nests after the daytime birds have gone to roost. Snakes are about now and hopefully they will be safe from people and dogs and vica-versa. At Nick.b, unfortunatly, if your dog is killing lizards, then you need to watch him very carefully. The law of averages will catch up with him and one day he will attack a snake. If you find blueys on your property, relocate them to the nearest bush where they will be safe. They may come back, just move them again........ or, get an electronic pulse training collar and begin re-training.
  11. If you keep encouraging the kookaburras they are great at keeping snake populations down. They, and ravens, crows and magpies eat lots of baby snakes and are a great 1st line natural defence. If your baiting mice, get the bait that does not kill these birds.
  12. I was called out to this pretty but angry little tigersnake.
  13. I think training the dog not to attack the snake, although it may be hard with some dogs, is the best way to lesson your chances of a snakebite. One popular method, in the States, is with the use of a training collar that delivers a shock via a remote. The rattlesnake vaccine is ok, not 100% and also needs to be topped up.
  14. I took some pics of the researchers visit and Ill post them on this thread if you like. Meanwhile, this copperhead was in the way of the freeway construction.had to go.
  15. Generally speaking Nic.B, the snake will not return to the area it was caught in as it will associate the area with the trauma of the capture. Ive never had a snake return to ground zero..that i know of. Snake venom is such a complicated protien Raz, and they are still discovering new things all the time.. In January i had researchers from ARVU come to my house to take samples of venom from some local snakes for a study. (results due next month)
  16. Touch wood, but in the 40 years that i have been working with venomous snakes, I have never had a bite that needed antivenom or hospitolisation. Ive just been lucky i think. The snake wont bite unless they are scared so, when i can, i like to finesse them into the bag rather than just grab it. I only ever use my stick and my bag when i go, all the other tools on the market scare the snake and then it becomes a more dangerous job. Raz, hopefully i wont have to find out but i carry bandages and a mobile phone so im sort of ready for it if it happens. @ Gillybob, the tigersnakes and copperheads have so much variation in colours and patterns it never ceases to amaze me. Just on the peninsula they can vary hugely. Sounds to me like you live in a paradise and if you are a religious person, you know you cant have paradise without the snake. Old Bob sounds like he would have been a great dog. Thanks K9Angel, im not so sure i like the sound of my voice... At least my but-crack didnt star in this video, lol.
  17. She wasnt to happy about being dragged from her home and stuck in a black bag, the poor little girl, but Im sure she happy when she saw me walking away.
  18. I have standing arrangment with a few wineries and we love using the barter system as far as snake catcher services in exchange for sweet local wine Linda. I always make time for alcohol related activities, lol. Thanks for he vid feedback.
  19. I had to remove this snake for a property today and the guy who called me was worried mostly about his portugese water "dog?" ( are they related to Poodles?) anyway, got some footage so enjoy another of my silly attempts at video making.
  20. I like the unpredictability of the leash free park, I think they are good for dogs and owners who dont have any other way to socialise. This one does not get that many dogs in at the same time, which is good, especially when you are trying to train
  21. Took Cooper to the leash free park today where he met Monty who gave him a run for his money. I thought it was cute.
  22. I got the link on my f/b wall, for what its worth, hope they are ok and getting treated well. This makes me stabby and sad at the same time.
  23. Hey raz, there is about 100 videos on my Youtube all featuring animals, mostly snakes but a few dog ones and other wildlife. snake catchers Youtube channel @ Sandgrubber, once a dog has learned to not attack a bluetongue they are usually pretty safe. One reptile does smell like the next, generally speaking, and this method has worked in the past on some dogs better than others. Of course it would be better to train with local snakes but the chance of someone getting hurt during the training process would create issues with o.h and s. I think. So I can not condone it on this forum if you know what i mean. I will have to look into organising a snake aversion training day, thanks for the idea.
  24. Here is a snake that i was called to today that had been hanging around this place in back of Rosebud.
