  1. Sandra asked Where in Queensland are you sandra.? The colour of a lot of species of snake is so variable that I.D is real hard without a pic Could be a tigersnake.. As far as the dog runs go, i cant stress how important it is to give the snake no where to hide and no reason to visit.Employ some poultry to work as early warning systems and snake deterents.' Today i was called to this tigersnake in Mt Eliza and i managed to get footage of the capture and release.
  2. Hi Jarvis That is a non dangerous snake marsh snake.. Species name:(Hemiaspis signata) Also known as Black-bellied Swamp Snake, Swamp Snake and Grass Snake. It is mildly venomous. Bites from this species have been known to cause severe local symptoms such as pain & swelling, with more general reactions such as headaches and nausea also recorded. All bites should still be treated immediately and attended to with correct first aid. Usually gets to 50cm and sometimes 70cm. Likes to live in rainforest & moist well-vegetated areas such as wet sclerophyll forest, margins of creeks, dams, wetlands & low-lying seasonally flooded areas. Diurnal, although may also be active at night in hot weather. Shelters under rocks, sheets of bark and thick debris. Eats small frogs and lizards and skink eggs
  3. If water and food is in good supply then the snakes will be doing their thing and not bothering humans. They cant resist the smell of rodents so if you have mice in your house, there is always a small chance a snake is following the scent. Ams, you did well to untangle the snake and tell off the kids and get rid of the netting. Good on you.
  4. Ams said A snake in netting is dangerous and will bite anything. Hope the dogs are ok, but you gotta feel a bit bad for what the slow, painful death the trapped snake must have gone though. Stupid kids, lol. One of my favourite sayings. Here is a copperhead i released last week after finding it getting some rays near a letterbox which belonged to a lady in Somers
  5. Just make sure you make this brew outside as the smell can stay in the house for days.
  6. Sometimes when Im called to a snake that has already gone from the area, I can tell where it is by looking at the birds. When a snake is disturbed in a yard, it may head to the nearest tree for cover in the leaf litter under it. Birds see this and will start letting all the other bird know there is a snake there. So, be aware of the different noises your backyard birds make and when they seem alarmed there is usually a reason for it.
  7. Boil it for as long as you can, a few hours, topping up the water as the level drops, then cool and strain and put it into a squirt bottle. The water has to be black or at least very dark. As its cooling you can add eucalyptus oil or teatree oil and dish washing detergent (for more sticking power). It needs to be resprayed every few days as the weather will disperse in. Inside it will last langer. The main reason we use this is to mask the smell of the rodent. In tests here at my place we have proven it to be very effective in turning a snake around.they dont like the cloves and the addition of the mentioned oils dosnt hurt either. You can use 1 or 2 bags of cloves, the more the merrier i spose, just dont forget it needs replacing even with the detergent in it. The use of the spray in conjunction with the clean up and removal of snake cover, common sense and a snake catcher phone number on speed dial should, in theory, lessen your chances of having a bad snake day.
  8. shepherds asked Leaving water down the boundry will stop the thirsty snake from looking any further for water.Copperheads dont climb but will use their small heads to push through long grass, but tigersnake have a wide head and they prey on birds and their eggs, raiding nests by climbing and I have removed a few from trees and bushes. A bag of cloves from the supermarket to 2 litres of water should do the trick. Here is a little tger snake
  9. Its warming up now guys, in victoria anyway, please stay safe and have a great Summer. snake catcher victoria australia I can be contacted easily for information by clicking this link. [email protected]
  10. Always carry leads and treats in your car for just such an emergency, good on you for saving them. Does make life easier when they are wearing a tag with a phone number on it
  11. Of course im all for it Julie. Bushy corridoors are so important for all animals and snakes will feel safe there. Any sort of rewilding, habitat regeneration and conservation is needed imo. It is a great idea if you are worried about snakes as you are giving them a comfortable home while at the same time making your imediate surroundings less friendly to snakes by getting rid of bushy plants and other debri or hiding places.. With the proper maintenance up close to the house you can feel safer in your home.
  12. So true Julie, I always say, If the snake has nowhere to hide it will move on. They dont like open spaces where they can be seen by a dog or bird of prey.
  13. So the old bugger just needs to get rid of the corrugated iron and mice and he'd be on his way getting ontop of the snakes. Love the old wivestales like ,the milk snake and the hoop snake ect. When I get called out to remove snakes i like listening to old guys and girls who have been on the land for generations, all the weird stories ect.
  14. Snakes Bite Dogs ok, so Ive highlighted some of the crazier points. Snakes are not attracted to milk,,,this is a myth The jury is out on the Solar snake scarers, don't run around in bare feet in the grass just because you use the Solar doodads. Pleas look at the picture of his elevated dog kennels with nesh bottoms.. Food and feaces drops through, the mice love it and the snakes can live under the old pieces of tin all year round eating mice. Is this a normal kennel for dogs being bred and fetching 1000s of dollars?
  15. I took these pics yesterday. Im so glad he has started to put some beef on. I thought he was going to be skinny and bony for ever. He has a steel pin in his shoulder from an operation to correct a birth deformity. This happened when he was a pup so it was before he came to me. My link Anyway, some more pics...Are in the link above.
  16. That sucks Bullish, sorry for your loss. Well I released some copperheads yesterday and got some pics.
  17. Wow Bullish, my heart goes out to you mate, that must have been devastating for you. Was it one snake or two separate ones?
  18. Very true Jerojath, In Australia pet snakes are now presenting with the neurological problems that came to Aus when the 'jag' morphs of the common carpet snake were illegally smuggled in from overseas..
  19. This little guy bailed up a large tigersnake yesterday, luckily it just barked from a distance and the snake was moved.
  20. I cant believe I have to make another 150 odd posts before I can access off topic threads..Anyway i can speed up the process? The snake eating itself is a baby American corn snake or something like that. Anyway, a snake might start eating its tail if there is a scent of rodent on it or if sees its tail moving and just grabs. Usually when a snake does this though it means it may have been dropped on its head a baby. :D Snakes are not to smart to start with and Yank and European snake breeders are constantly line breeding to get better looking morphs for the pet industry. I think line breeding or inbreeding makes a dumb animal even dumber sometimes.
  21. I do know the experience of the loss of a dog to a snake raz, It happened to my Mandy when I was living in South Australia. Every year i get called to at least one home where the dog has died after and altercation with a snake. I was just saying that the red bellied black snake hasnt killed many humans (I think only one) compared to the brown snake which redbellies eat..
